SALEM, Ore. - They met at a bar. About Christmas time.
She complained of legal and financial problems and said she was homeless. He said he felt sorry for her and rented her a motel room.
''He met her for breakfast the next day, and from there the affair progressed,'' says a detective who recounted the story, Lt. Steve Bellshaw of the Salem police.
But the "he" in this case was married. Tuesday night he told her he didn't want to see her anymore.
She called him back and told him to write down the number of a bank account.
''She said to deposit $6,000 by 11 a.m. Wednesday or she'd call his wife,'' Bellshaw said.
But he told his wife about the affair, and they called the police.
The police gave him $2,000 in marked money. ''We put a wire on him and set up a time and location for the exchange,'' Bellshaw said.
The woman changed the location a couple of times, but they ended up meeting at a Fred Meyer store.
He gave her the money. The officers arrested her in the parking lot. She said the money was a gift.
Police said Julie Ann Burlison, 30, was booked on a charge of theft by extortion. Police wouldn't identify him. He's 52.
