Police: Mom put baby in warm oven during break up
A MetroWest-area mother is accused of putting her baby girl into an oven during a breakup with the child's father, Orlando police said Tuesday.
Sharlyn Singh, 29, was arrested after the baby's uncle found the 11-month-old in the oven, which was turned on, Monday night as he was helping the baby's father move out of Metro Place Apartments, said Sgt. Barbara Jones, a police spokeswoman.
The baby began crying as the uncle was packing a suitcase for his brother, who was waiting outside the apartment, according to a report. When the uncle asked Singh where the baby was, she didn't answer and left the apartment.
That's when the uncle realized the cries were coming from the kitchen. He found the child in the oven with streaks of oven grease and what may have been a small burn or scrape on her chin, Jones said. The baby was not seriously hurt.
"The oven wasn't terribly hot, but it was on," Jones said.
Singh was found soon afterward at the complex. She denied putting the baby in the oven.
The Department of Children & Families took possession of the baby. Singh was booked into the Orange County Jail on one count of felony aggravated child abuse. She was being held late Tuesday on $15,000 bail.
Jones did not release the name of the baby's father.
