Yesterday morning, a peaceful attempt by television stars to provide relief to flood victims in Vakola took a violent turn when local hooligans took over the camp and drove the actors away.
Television actors Sanjit Bedi, Shraddha Nigam, Rupali Ganguly, Nigar Z Khan, Hussain and others had planned an initiative, along with Wockhardt, to supply medical aid and vaccinations to the victims of the July 26 deluge.
This was the second such camp organised by the actors, the first one being held last week at the Bandra Kurla complex. Told to get lost
Sanjit Bedi, who reached the venue at around 8.45 am, with a team of doctors and medical supplies, explains how he and the other actors were asked to leave.
"I reached in the morning to oversee the arrangements being made. We had already conducted a similar camp last week so we knew exactly what was to be done.
At 10.45, a bunch of guys walked up and asked me to vacate the area immediately. When I told them we were here for relief work, they started abusing me with obscenities and threatened to beat me up." Territorial issue
Sanjit was with co-star and friend Shraddha Nigam when the incident occurred. He says one of the men walked up to him and started pushing him around.
"I decided to stand up for my convictions. But it was pointless for the two of us to take on so many guys. Their issue was with us being in their territory." When one of the guys roughed Sanjit up, he decided to take him on. "I will not sit quietly if anyone messes with me. Yes, we did have a kind of fist fight," admits the actor. Left the camp
Sanjit and Shraddha vacated the area as soon as the locals took over the camp. "Our intention was to help those in trouble. We asked the doctors to stay and made sure adequate medical supplies were provided. The guy I had a fight with started giving orders to the others as soon as we left," explains Sanjit. |
