"We knew we were made for each other"

As the wedding season kicks off, the first couple from the telly fraternity to be exchanging vows will be Arjun Punj and Gurdip Kohli. With just a fortnight from the D day, that's 10th December, this lovey-dovey couple is currently engrossed in the plushy preparations for the gala wedding.

This beauteous actor of Sindoor fame and Saathi Re dude take out some time from their busy schedule and discuss their marriage plans with Anil Merani. Exceprts.

"It will be a typical Punjabi / Sikh wedding"

So all set for the D day! What are your plans for the occasion?
Gurdip:It will be a typical Punjabi / Sikh wedding with all the lavish build up occasions - mehendi, sangeet and the works for which we Punjabis are famous or rather infamous for! The main wedding ceremony will be held in the capital, but we also plan to throw a lavish reception here in Mumbai as well.

Arjun, do you plan to throw a bachelors bash?
I don't think Gurdip will like it, as she knows how wild these things can get. Post marriage, I might throw a party, but then Gurdip will definitely be a part of the hungama!

Any pre wedding jitters?
Arjun: Though I have heard a lot about it from my married friends, luckily, I have not yet experienced it. But there are still 15 more days to go. So you never know!

How would you both define marriage?
A combination of love, commitment, understanding and compatibility.

Tell us about your exquisite bridal dress.
Gurdip: I can't disclose anything about my outfit. That would spoil all the fun won't it? All I can say is that it's come out really beautiful. Just wait and watch.

And where are you heading for you honeymoon?
Gurdip: As of now, we have decided on a sojourn to the beautiful beaches of Maldives and later when we have the time (around March), Arjun has promised me a whirl wind romantic tour of Europe. In fact, I accpeted his proposal on the very premise that he will take me to Switzerland!

"We are eagerly waiting for D day"

Thought of any gifts for each other?
Gurdip: What better gift we can give each other, apart from our undying love and commitment, which the wedding vows entail. On a more superficial level, we have shopped a lot for each other.

How well do you know each other?
Arjun: We have been going around for the past three and a half years, and within the last six months of our courtship, we knew that we were made for each other.

Does the general belief that 'we see the true colours post marriage' bother you'll?
Gurdip: We know that, but I guess three and a half years is enough time to understand each other. We strongly believe that if two people click, then they can weather any storm. In fact if you don't sync, even years of marriage can come undone.

Any one thing you would want to change in your partner?
Arjun: Why should I change, I am already perfect.
Gurdip: I would be really happy if he could stop wasting food.

Gurdip, can Arjun cook?
Like all guys, he can prepare omelette. Nothing more, but to be fair to him, he does make it well.

Did participating in Nach Baliye 2 help in cementing your relationship?
Arjun: Yes it really helped us to come closer than ever before. We learnt to cope with stress and pressure together. We are happy that we are currently ousted from the show as it gives us ample time to prepare for our wedding. We have virtually finished all the shopping and are now eagerly waiting for D day.

Ekta's secretary turns to acting

Back to Section Stories

Sapana Patil Poojary

Secretary deposit: Saurav Arya
Saurabh Arya aka Mayank in Saathii Re (Star One) is on cloud nine. The actor worked as a secretary to producer Ekta Kapoor before getting into acting. Talking about this sudden leap, Saurabh says, "I always wanted to become an actor. But after I shifted my base to Mumbai (from Delhi), I realised that it wasn't an easy life task. I needed a job to sustain myself in the city and at that time someone informed me that there was a vacancy in Balaji Telefilms for a secretarial job. Fortunately, I bagged the job."

He adds, "In due course of time, I asked Ekta, if I could try my hand in acting. She agreed and offered me the role of Harry in Kkusum. Ever since, I have been getting more and more acting assignments."

Talking about his stint at Balaji, Saurabh says, "For the first two months, I had a tough time handling the job as a secretary. I was expected to call meetings and I didn't know that the serial with the lowest episode bank should be called in first" So, how was his equation with Ekta Kapoor? "Ekta never compromises on quality, which is not wrong. Any other boss in her place would have screamed for doing such shabby work. I am indebted to her for giving me a break in Kkusum," he adds.

As the grapevine had it, Saurabh was contemplating marriage with actress Aashka Goradia (who was playing Kumud in Kkusum) during his stint in Balaji. To this he says, "Aashka and I were great friends. We were in touch for sometime but then we lost touch."

Lost in the mela?

Do our small screen stars have twins in the big screen industry? We've tracked some down…

Parakh Madan, Suman in Saathi Re

Time Bong:
This young newcomer resembles another young newcomer of the big screen, Koena Mitra. The dusky, heavy-lidded Bengali look, even though Parakh hails from Punjab.

Monaz Mewawala, Manasi in Risshton Ki Dor

Smile guru:
The wide smile, the tumble-down hair… Monaz could well pass off as Kajol's kid sister, Tanisha. (The one who's aspiring to make a hit jodi with Shah Rukh Khan!)

Aman Verma, Rishabh Lamba in Viraasat

Power puff: With the puff, the worry lines on the forehead, it seems as if Aman will begin spouting incoherent dialogues, a la Dilipsaab soon. The only difference is the decibel level. Aman follows the norm of loud soaps, Dilipsaab used to mutter gently…

Qazi Tauqeer, winner of Fame Gurukul, 2005

Iska naam Roshan hoga? Mithun was proud to be the poor man's Amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi was used to being called the poor man's Zeenat Aman. So Qazi certainly shouldn't complain about being the poor man's Hrithik Roshan.

Deepshikha, Iccha in Baa, Bahu Aur Baby

Pout rage:
She takes us back the hot and happening days of Parveen Babi in the '70s. Deepshikha seems to be edging towards the hot seat now.

Surveen Chawla, lead in Kaajjal

Giggle search:
She resembles the numero uno of the big screen, at least in the giggles department. Her eyes too, like Ash's defy the pallete, neither blue, nor green, nor grey. You could pass Surveen off as Ash in those early days, soon after she was crowned Miss World.

Kiran Karmarkar quits Saathi Re...

Reason? He was plain bored with his character in the show

Back to Section Stories

Ranjib Mazumder

Kiran Karmarkar
It's dj vu time for Kiran Karmarkar as he quits yet another show. After Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, the actor is now bored with his role in Saathi Re and is making a quick exit. After a hiatus, he returned with two projects, Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Sa Aasmaan and Saathi Re. And like Kahaani…, his character will also die in the show. Says a source, "Kiran took a long time to select his comeback role. He zeroed on Saathi Re, only because producer Sunjoy Wadhwa already has a hit with Saat Phere. He was promised that it will be a pivotal character in the story with good footage. On the contrary, he was getting sidelined in the show. Moreover, the show has not been getting good TRPs since its launch. Kiran had a word with Sunjoyji as he wanted to quit the show on a good note. So, they have mutually decided to kill the character."

Kiran Karmarkar, when contacted said, "When I signed the show, I thought it would be a good change from the other shows I have done in the past. But, with each passing day and episode, I have realised that this is just not worth it. Moreover, I am not ready to play a character whose daughters are over 20 years of age! There is nothing new left in the character which can be explored. So, I have spoke to Sunjoy and decided to quit."

Sunjoy Wadhwa, when contacted, said, "He knew what his character was going to be in the show. But, there is no bad blood between us."
