Old is Gold.

Today's music is enjoyable/momentary, but yesterday's is something that soothes the soul and will last forever. May be they were lucky to have great composers, singers, lyricists. I would say 50-60-70's as the great/golden era of Indian filmi music. Also yesterday songs were more about simplicity of bol-sur-awaz. Now it's more complicated with the musical instruments and the fillers, than using good bol-sur-awaz. Naturally logon ko saadgi asani se yaad rehta hai.

Today there is scarcity of good composers(except for ARR, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy,Ismail Darbar - that too good work is very rare),singers and lyricists(only Gulzar,Javeed Akhtar).

Remix!!!!!!!!! I am dead against. Agar shakh hai to please listen to "yeh mera dil" by Sunidhi and also by Asha Bhonsle ya "khaike pan" by Udit Narayan and also by Kishore Kumar.

Talking about Remix... My son was about 5 when I heard the song.. kabhi aar Kabhi paar coming on TV and without looking at who is singing.. I told him.. why dont you go watch it.. these are old songs and you might like the tune.. and guess to my horror what was happening... it was these half nake people dancing to this wonderful song... I do not support remix.. I would rather they spend their time in finding their originality, instead of aping the old songs and crucifying them.

The older songs had more rythm, meaningful lyrics .. yes there are exceptions.. but these days its the exceptions that are more .. 😕

Totally agree but then Jagjit's rendiion of 'Baabul Mora...' is better than Saigal's; Nihira's 'Babuji Dheere Chalna' in 'SeI' sounds good.

Did not listen to Jagjit S's "Babul mora", must be good. Jagjit has a class of his own. But for the second song, Nihira might have sung well, but can never beat Geeta Dutt in "Babuji dheere chalna". Geeta Dutt had that special "locch-shararat" in her voice.

As everyone has already said, old is gold and you can't compare old hindi songs with the new, they are in a class of their own. Old hindi songs had soul, meaning and rhythm to them, which made them more enjoyable and relavent to the listeners. New songs don't have that much, but some musicians are trying to keep the same soul and spirit of the old songs alive today, which I'm grateful for. But then there are the remixes and westernized songs that are just to make a profit, but I just listen to those songs and not watch them, so I feel bad... 😆!

Anoli said it best with No Songs/Music = No life!!!

I only really listen to a few forms of Hindi classical music. Mostly works on the sitar or tablas. I absolutely hate most of the garbage being spewed by Bollywood today in regards to music. It's nonsensical psuedo-pop that has no real musical or lyrical content.

But in regards to my English music, most of the music I have is from before the 90s and 80s. I do love classic rock from the 80s, but most of my music is jazz and easy listening from well beyond the time of our generation. Add to that my sheer love for classical music, especially from the romantic period, and opera, and almost half of my CDs and LPs (yes, I do have a huge number of LPs) are from a different era.

Hell, sometimes I even wish I were born into a different era. When music actually meant something. Over the past few decades, we've devolved culturally, and it's most visible in most of the music being bought in today's world.

I don;t agree at all.

Not all music made in Bombay is crap. Some of it is. Just as some of the music made in yesteryears was crap too.

I'm not referring to it as "crap" in terms of personal preference in music, melody and such. Rather, in the terms of the actual contents of the song. If you were to line up an alien, and play to him all forms of our music (Hindi and English), and ask him to place them chronologically, he would naturally choose the reverse order than what it is in reality. There used to be preambles to songs back them, a certain, uniform and beautiful melodic composition, and an actual message in songs. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of stuff coming out in Bollywood that's not absolute garbage, but most of it simply is.
