Arnav stepped out of his bathroom after taking a long cold shower. The sweltering heat in Delhi seemed to offer no respite this year. The monsoons were already a week late and it didn't look like the weather was going to get better anytime soon. The regular incidents of stoppage in electricity made the living conditions bordering on inhospitable. He got out of the bathroom and went straight for his mobile first to check for any messages. It had been two weeks since their coffee meeting, yet Kushi had still not got back to him with a decision. Having said that, he could see her stance softening towards him. The other day he had met her in the elevator and when he had greeted her, she gave him a half smile, instead of biting his head off like he had learned to expect. He was feeling a wee bit positive about Kushi's decision and made up his mind to wait for another week before approaching her again. He then proceeded to wear a pair of drawstring pants and went to the kitchen to make a decision on what he could cook for dinner. It was a toss between some Pasta and stir fry noodles. He was about to play some music in his audio system when he heard someone ring his doorbell constantly. He swore under his breath wondering who was being this impatient to meet him, without even giving him the time to react. Then he wore the first T-shirt he could find.
When he opened the door he was little less than shocked to find Kushi standing outside of it. He hadn't expected her to turn up at his place like this. For a moment he wondered whether she had come here to surprise him a with a favorable decision, but when he saw her hardened jaw and her closed fists, he knew she was angry, rather she was furious.
Before he could say anything or even welcome her in, she pushed him back with her dainty palms. The force of her push had surprised him. For a woman her size she was deceptively strong. 'How dare you pay my fees? Who do you think you are?'
Before Arnav could even make sense of what she was saying, she pushed him back again. 'Do you think you will do all this and you can win me over?' She bit out. The words ringing a bell from the past, when he had said something similar when she had tried to reach out to him and help him. How the tables had turned.
'Do you think you will settle my dues and buy my acceptance to continue with this sham of a marriage?' She hissed with her eyes wide seething in anger, the golden flecks in her hazel eyes were all the prominent.
'I'm more than capable of handling my finances, of paying my dues. I don't want your money. Stop pretending like you care.' She pushed him again and Arnav's body bounced against a wall. Before she could say anything more, Arnav held her hands and pushed her against the wall. She had done it. The anger, the temper, that he had carefully learned to control in the last two years came roaring back again.
'Are you even listening to what you are saying?' He bit out.
Kushi tried to remove her hands from the hold of his. He adjusted his hands to make sure that he didn't hurt her, the events from two years ago, serving as a grim reminder.
'This isn't about your dues or mine. This is our money. You walked out of that place and I followed. So rightfully we had to settle our dues and I did it on our behalf.' He looked into her eyes to see if his words had any effect. But he saw no change in how she looked at him, her eyes continued to show absolute disdain for him, for what he had done.
'How can you even think that I'm trying to buy your acceptance? What is wrong with you?' He hissed.
Kushi was so lost in her anger, in the need to hurt Arnav to make him feel as miserable as she did, make him feel every bit of the pain she experienced in the last two years, that every rational thinking flew out of her mind. 'Every Goddamned thing is wrong with me, only me. It is my mistake that our marriage broke. Its my mistake that you went to you ex the day after our wedding, it is my Goddamned mistake that you loved her and not me.'
The anger in Kushi's eyes were replaced by an utter feeling of helplessness and hurt, temporarily.
Arnav moved his hands away, he closed his fists and banged it against the wall, the sound reverberating and making Kushi jump lightly.
'Damn it Kushi. I'm trying to do my best here. Do you have to keep reminding me of my mistakes and inadequacies all the time?'
Kushi furiously rubbed away the traces of tears that threatened to break out from her eyes.
'That exactly what you did by paying my fees.' She had already been feeling embarrassed about using Arnav's family money to pursue her management degree, that Arnav had paid those dues on her behalf, only made it worse.
Arnav took a step back, they both needed to calm down. He was scared of what he would say in a volatile situation like this, he didn't want to undo the progress they had made in the last few weeks. He decided to get Kushi and himself some water to help them calm down. While walking towards the table he heard Kushi say. 'You know of all the mistakes I did, the biggest one,' Arnav turned around to face her, 'Is giving you another chance Arnav.'
Arnav walked close to Kushi with a glass of water.'Kushi you are not in the right frame of mind. Let this pass and then we can talk.' Arnav's measured reply irritated her further, that she was not able to get a response out of him, hurt him, that her words had no effect on him angered her further.'Why do you always get to decide what we do in our so called relationship every single time.' Kushi screamed at him now losing every bit of sanity left in her. She was close to getting hysterical, the demons of the past finally catching up with her and unleashing a fury that she never knew she had possessed.
Arnav was perplexed as to why Kushi was just looking for a reason to pick a fight with him. It didn't strike him even once that this was going to happen someday or the other over some issue.
'Stop right there Kushi. I hardly ever get to decide anything. I didn't decide to walk out of our relationship two years ago. I didn't decide to give up on our relationship. I didn't decide to never give us a chance again. It was you!' Arnav retaliated just as irrationally as Kushi.
The words pushed Kushi over the edge. 'Screw you Arnav, screw this marriage. If it were my decisions that ended our marriage, then just leave me alone.' She walked out of the apartment as quickly as she had come in, shutting the door with force on her way out, that caused a loud noise.
Arnav stood there trying to understand what had just happened. He gulped down the water from the glass in his hand. He could not let things break apart so easily. He had to apologise to Kushi and get things back on track. He couldn't believe that he had told her something utterly stupid. The truth couldn't be much farther than what he said, it was him who ended the relationship with his actions, not her.
By the time Arnav located his house keys and wallet and ran down the stairs to find Kushi and apologise to her, she had already left. He ran his fingers through his hair. 'f**ksake!' He swore, wondering why every time they came close to a resemblance of happiness and stability in their relationship something happened to that shook the balance bringing them back to square one.
------------
Straight from Arnav's home she had gone to her friend Sharanya's home. She had hugged Sharanya as soon as she got into her room and broke down. A hot cup of tea and a few minutes later Kushi had opened up to Sharanya and told her the reason for her break down a few minutes ago. Sharanya patiently listened to her and helped her calm down. But she didn't pass any comment on whether she felt the same as Kushi, whether she felt Arnav was at wrong. Kushi felt Sharanya was avoiding the discussion.
Much later when the two friends were exploring Sharanya's exhaustive book collection, Kushi prodded her friend to share her unbiased view. 'Kush, there have been many instances in the past when I felt he was being a jerk. But I will have to disagree with you with regards to this incident.'
When Kushi had looked at her asking her to explain further, Sharanya stood up and walked to her book case with her eyes trained on the books while still speaking to Kushi. 'Kushi he did, what any husband or life partner should do. He owned up to his responsibilities Kush. And given how he had moved out, I'm sure this must have been very difficult on him too. Why can't you see that?'
Kushi considered Sharanya's words and then replied, 'But Sharan why did he have to do it when it was all over between us? I feel like he tried to buy my forgiveness.'
Sharanya looked for a book Kushi had asked in her book case and then turned around to face Kushi, 'Something tells me that was not his intention, if he wanted to buy your forgiveness, why didn't he tell you about it?
She then walked towards Kushi with the book in her hand, 'Irrespective of whatever his intentions are, he did a good thing. And you were being unfair with him, earlier today.' She placed the book next to Kushi and then told her, 'See whether you want to give him another chance or not is your prerogative, I understand why you are having reservations about the whole thing. But you can't mix that with today's incident.'
Kushi looked at her palms like she were searching for something. She spoke to Sharanya without moving her eyes, 'This is so difficult Sharan. I don't know what to do.'
Sharanya placed her hand on Kushi's shoulders, 'Kushi I know this is overwhelming. If I were in your place, even I would be confused, heck I would have slapped that guy a few times by now.' Sharanya giggled and Kushi joined her. 'It all boils down to whether you are prepared to give him and most importantly yourselves another chance at a new beginning.'
At around seven Kushi left Sharanya's home, she was no longer interested in going out and having a good time, the weariness of the day, the emotional exhaustion catching up.
As she felt the drops of rain water bounce on her skin Kushi felt a sense of calm awash her. Sharanya was right she had overreacted and she had given grief to Arnav unfairly. She had used the opportunity to let out her pent up frustrations and said things purely to spite him.
Arnav had done a good thing, something she would have done too. She had been an emotional mess since she met his family earlier today and hadn't been able to think straight. He was right, he had turned his life around for the good and had made himself the kind of person she'd respect. He was a far cry from the man she knew two years ago; far more matured, patient and responsible. He was the kind of person she could trust and possibly give another chance to.
But deep down inside she found it difficult to let go. She had told everyone that she had made peace with the past, but it wasn't the entire truth. She wanted to trust him, believe that he had changed, yet something stopped her in the last few weeks. She was very scared; scared that if she gave him a chance he would throw it back at her face again, causing her hurt and pain like two years ago. She was scared that if she trusted him and eventually gave him her heart, he would break it and crush her dreams with it.
But how long could she live like this? Over the course of her stay at Ahmedabad a few men showed genuine interest in pursuing her and every single time she refused to even have a coffee with any of them simply because she found it difficult to trust them.
It was probably time to let go and embrace a new beginning. It would take time for her to come around, but she had to do it. It was time to stop holding back, It was time to take a step towards Arnav.
-----------Kushi paid the driver and got out of the auto, the drizzle was getting heavier by the second, Kushi looked up to the skies willingly with a gentle smile playing on her lips and she let the water trickle down her face, with it washing down the last of her barriers.
Kushi opened the door to her Bua's home lazily. In spite of Sharanya's repeated invitations asking her to spend the the remaining of her weekend at her place, she had decided to go home. The house was pitch dark due to another incident of temporary stoppage of electricity, the second incident of the day. But at least it wasn't uncomfortably hot anymore. The first rains of monsoon had brought down the room temperature considerably .
Kushi placed her bags and keys near the door. She walked carefully to the kitchen to light a candle. She then held the candle and walked to her room to change her clothes that were partially wet due to the rains. She placed the candle on a small table, near the door and then before walked to the cupboard to pick her clothes out. She heard one of the windows in her room flapping open and shut due to the winds. In her hurry to leave the house she had forgotten to close the window. She walked towards the window and was about to pull it inside to shut it when she saw a completely drenched Arnav standing a few feet away, taking guard below a tree while waiting for her.
His face lit up as soon as he saw her near the window. 'Kushi...' he screamed out her name.
'Arnav?' Kushi was perplexed by what Arnav was doing near her room at this time of the night, completely drenched by the rains. But before she could think further or even invite him in, her legs automatically moved towards him. Kushi ran from her room, to outside the house, and to the street where Arnav was standing. Seeing Arnav here like this, after everything she had said to him, lit up a candle in terms of hope in her heart.
Kushi stood a few feet away from the tree, the rain drops now falling strongly, drenching her completely. Arnav stood below a small tree that offered him very little protection. They stood like that for a few seconds, surrounded by the occasional glimpses of lightning , the thundering clouds and the rainwater that had formed a halo around them.
'I followed you and I when I came here I saw that no one was home. I tried your phone, but you didn't answer. I didn't want to wait outside your house and attract unwanted attention.' He continued looking at Kushi through the weltering heavy droplets of rain water.
Knowing that he had her complete attention he decided to deliver her an apology for everything he said today, 'Two years ago you went away and I let you go away. Not this time Kushi. Please give me one chance. I'm sorry for everything I said today and for everything I had done two years ago. I promise...'
Before he could complete the remainder of his apology he saw something whiz towards him and fall on him. He held the body to support himself from falling down and before he could react he felt a pair of quivering lips upon his.
