My father pitches me like Tom Cruise: Ranbir Kapoor
Ranbir Kapoor in conversation with Komal Nahta about his films, father and his future.
If your film works, what difference do we see in you?
Sirf market price increase hota hai, mujh mein baki koi difference nahi aata. Mera lifestyle wahi same rehta hai.
How do you discuss your market with friends in the industry?
I never discuss my price. My father takes care of that. My father pitches me as if I am Tom Cruise.
What is your take on remakes?
Why should I follow other people's path of success? I like to create my own. I would like to play original characters and make movies which tomorrow others will make remakes of.
How was it working with Deepika?
Deepika and I had come together individually for this movie. I love her and I will always love her and we both have had closure, so we are able to work together. The film is beyond Deepika and my relationship.
To what extent can you go to promote a film?
I hate promoting films! I would love to do fewer films, so that I don't have to go for promotions. I feel it takes away from the joy of making the movie. Creativity, I feel, is dying because of promotions. While acting we are involved in a creative process and during promotions we are merely reduced to salesmen! But everyone is promoting their films, so even we have to. The biggest stars are doing it, so who are we? We get insecure and go ahead with promotions thinking what if our film doesn't work if we don't promote it.
Do you consider yourself a superstar?
I have always been termed as the 'next' superstar since I have been launched. That 'next' tag has still not been removed. I will be a superstar when that tag is removed.
Do you agree that you are the only superstar from the generation of actors you come from?
I agree, but I think I am still in the Under-19 team, still not in the Indian cricket team.
You have a very good image amongst audiences of all age groups. What is the key to your likeability?
I don't think my image is very good. I am linked with almost all of my co-stars. I am termed as a Casanova. But I am not one. I want to get rid of that image and I am slowly getting there. There used to be a time when that is the only thing people spoke about me.
I'm glad now people talk about my work rather than who I am in a relationship with.
Does dance come effortlessly to you?
I always follow what my father used to say, what I have heard him say while growing up which is to enjoy your songs and that is what I do which makes my dancing look effortless. Baaki mujhe rhythm ki samajh hai, so I dance decently. Sab gaano mein mehnat thi par Badtameez Dil mein sabse zyada mehnat thi, waise bhi I danced after two years.
