Arjun gives tips on how we can be vigilant citizens

I hope not'. I say this because it is important that we take the first step, if we think of ourselves as responsible citizens of this nation. Agreed that crime is increasing on a daily basis. The lawbreakers are finding new ways of committing crime. The outcome is too horrid for any of us to bear. Rape, theft, murder are few of the offenses that we can actually think of. But the reality has a lot more to show.

How can we as citizens become vigilant enough to put a stop to this? It is simple. All that I will need from you is to make an honest effort to follow the following pointers:

1. Don't switch off that light-
Yes, it does sound silly. But if you are leaving the house vacant especially in the night, then do not switch off the lights. This certainly helps avoid any act of theft that might be in the planning stages.

2. Travel safely in the night-
This is especially for the women. If you happen to travel alone at night, avoid taking secluded lanes and places of least human occupancy. Heading for a buzzing market or a crowded street should be your top priority.

3. Carry a weapon for defence-
No, by this I do not mean an actual weapon but something that would protect you or help you escape the initial signs of approaching danger. So for example, a pepper spray would be of lot of use for a woman, while a man could carry a pen knife.

4.Fight back abuse-
Abuse, be it physical or verbal is harmful. Tolerating such an offence is a bigger crime. My sincere advice to all of you would be to not endure it but report it to the concerned authority as soon as possible.

5.Senior citizens, be careful always-
This is especially for senior citizens. Do not in any case open the door and keep the same ajar for the mailman, courier guy or anybody else. Keep this in mind that just because you are an old man or woman, there will be miscreants who will take advantage of this fact.

Hence, dear viewers, your safety is in your hands. Being careless and silly about it is as good as disrespecting your own self. Take care and be safe.
