Aashiqui 2' triumphs, shatters myths, silences detractors!
By Taran Adarsh, May 1, 2013 - 06:53 IST
The industry has every reason to pop champagne. The two new releases, AASHIQUI 2 and IRON MAN 3, have hit pay dirt at the ticket window. Diametrically opposite in terms of content/genre, the films have proved, yet again, that two qualitative films can co-exist in one week. Even in a non-festive week. Despite a strong opponent [IPL cricket matches].
It's foolhardy to compare the two films, but the neck to neck start at several stations on Friday gave zor ka jhatkato a lot of people within the industry, especially the naysayers/pessimists who were predicting doomsday for AASHIQUI 2. The love story was slated for release in May, but the producers decided to prepone its release to 26 April, thus limiting the time-frame for its promotion. The strategy could've boomeranged, since the love story stars two relative newcomers and was riding purely on its music and brand value. But the Bhatts and Bhushan Kumar worked overtime to ensure that the film was extensively promoted. They stand vindicated today.
The success of AASHIQUI 2 shatters the myth that 'sad endings' don't work at the BO. Actually, excuses such as these crop up when a movie sinks at the BO and the film-maker in question looks for justifications to save face. Let me remind those people that MUGHAL-E-AZAM, the greatest love story of all times, also had a 'sad ending'. And EK DUUJE KE LIYE too. Also QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK. And DEVDAS as well. In other genres, ANAND, DEEWAAR and SHOLAY had 'sad endings' also. Were those films failures? There's also this feeling that if the hero is projected as an alcoholic on screen, it keeps a large chunk of the audience away from cineplexes. Isn't that bizarre? Recall DEVDAS, which was attempted several times on the Indian screen. It projected the male protagonist hitting the bottle with a vengeance, but did that aspect keep the audience away from theatres?
The success of any film is related to its economics and in this case [AASHIQUI 2], a major chunk of the investment has already been recovered from the sale of Satellite, Audio and parts of Overseas. Whatever accrues from India theatrical would not only help recover the nominal costs, but also put the film in profit zone. The weekend business has been fantastic, while the business on weekdays is super-strong as well.
23 years ago, I distinctly remember, AASHIQUI had brought about a revolution within the film industry. It was a game changer. The music industry witnessed a big turnaround in business then. Today, AASHIQUI 2 has given an impetus to the biz of romantic films, besides shattering several myths prevalent within the film industry. In more ways than one, AASHIQUI 2 too has been a game changer of sorts. Cheers to that!
After a poor start to the year with only one clean hit (Jolly LLB) and one huge disappointment (Himmatwala) in Q1 2013, the second quarter began well with Chashme Baddoor striking box-office gold. Other Bollywood releases in April like Nautanki Saala, Commando and Ek Thi Daayan were 'plus' films.
Quite surprisingly, the first runaway 'blockbuster' of the year was Mohit Suri's Aashiqui 2, which collected 35.45 crore in it's first week at the Indian box office. Although the film released on just 1100 screens, the collections were only 8% lower than Himmatwala which released on 3000+ screens and had a 'A-list' superstar like Ajay Devgan.

'Aashiqui 2' Is Superhit, 'Iron Man 3' A Clean Hit
By Joginder Tuteja, MovieTalkies.com, 03 May 2013
Aashiqui 2 has seen an unbelievable response coming its way. If the weekend collections were flattering enough, what with over 20 crores coming, weekdays have been simply superb as well with collections not just holding on very well but even seeing escalation at number of centres. In fact it was also a never seen phenomenon especially on Wednesday when the collections were more or less equal to that of Friday on account of 1st May holiday. Simply superb!
As a result, the film has netted over 38 crores* in one week flat, something which could well have pleased it's makers (Mohit Suri,Bhushan Kumar, Bhatts) had that been predicted as a lifetime total for the film earlier on. However picture abhi baaki hai since this Aditya Roy Kapur-Shraddha Kapoor starrer has got some good screen space for itself in the second week as well, something that would have seemed impossible a week ago since there is competition in the form of Shootout at Wadala and Bombay Talkies.
A clean superhit, the film's superb run reminds one of OMG Oh My God which had ended at a total of over 80 crores after netting 16 crores in it's opening weekend and 36 crores in it's first week. Though it seems like quite a distance to be covered, rest assured this romantic musical would cross the 50 crore mark at the least.
Aashiqui 2 Emerges A HIT Monday 30th April 2013 10.30 IST |
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network Aashiqui 2 emerged a hit with solid collections on Monday. The film collected around 3.50 crore nett on Monday as per early estimates which is just 35% lower than its Friday collection. The four day business is around 21.25 crore nett and the first week business will be around 29 crore nett. The film was steady at multiplexes on Monday and was much better than the normal Monday fall at multiplexes. So even the areas which were not so strong on day one held up well on Monday. Mass circuits were rock steady from UP to CI to Rajasthan. The film will is likely to do similar first week business to Chasme Baddoor though stronger competition in the coming weeks may prevent it matching that film for lifetime business. | |

Aashiqui 2 Saturday Collection. Hit hai Boss!
Aashiqui 2 has come as a breath of fresh air at the box office. It surprised all to storm to have the second biggest opening ever for a newcomer after Student of The Year last year. Now Aashiqui 2 is heading for a mega hit at the box office. Aashiqui 2 collected around 5.5 crore nett on First Day at the box office and as per early trends it has collected nearly same on the second day also. That means film is sustaining well after a superb first day and is heading for a big opening weekend.
As per early estimates Aashiqui 2 has collected around 5.75 crore nett on Saturday, thus, taking its two day total collection to around 11.25 crore nett. If all goes well on Sunday expect the first weekend business of the film to be around 17.5-18+ crore nett which will be fantastic. Aashiqui 2 is made on extremely low budget of 12 crore and is carried on the shoulders of two new comers. Film is expected to recover all its cost in 5-6 days flat from India Theatrical itself and is on its way to be one of the biggest hits of recent times.
Collection Breakup -

Total - 11.5 crore nett.

Aashiqui 2 First Day Box Office Collection
Aashiqui 2 has performed exceedingly well on the first day at the box office. It started slowly on Friday Morning and showed growth with each passing show through the day. As per early estimates Aashiqui 2 has collected around 5.5-6 crore nett on Friday. Final figure may vary as major single screen reports are still to be received.
Aashiqui 2 started slowly with morning shows registering occupancy of around 25-30% on average. As day progressed occupancy increased to 40-50%+, with Evening and Night shows registering 50-60%+ occupancy. This is extremely good considering film is carried on totally new star cast. Overall occupancy for the day is around 45-50% on average.
Aashiqui 2 is carrying good feedback from all centers and expected to show good jump on Saturday and Sunday. If all goes well for the film then 20 crore nett mark for the weekend is on the cards. This will be a fantastic achievement from the film. Budget of the film as mentioned by Mahesh Bhatt himself is around 12 crore. That means Aashiqui 2 is set to recover all its cost from India Theatrical itself in the first week itself and is heading for a sure shot Hit at the box office.

Mohit Suri's Aashiqui 2 continued it's victorious run at the box office, as the film collected Rs 7.5-7.75 crore on Sunday as per early estimates. Based on the collections we have received from a few centres, the growth in business varies from 5-10% in metro cities to as high as 65% in Kanpur (from Saturday).
The film has fared very well at smaller centres, while business at metros was on the lower side due to Hollywood release Iron Man 3.
The 3 day weekend collections of Aashiqui 2 now stands at Rs 20 crore, which is the second highest for a film starring newcomers (after Student Of The Year which collected 28 crore in it's first weekend).
Aashiqui 2 is likely to be the biggest ROI (return on investment) HIT of the year so far.
Day-wise collection breakdown below.
- Friday ' 5.75 crore
- Saturday ' 6.5 crore
- Sunday ' 7.75 crore (estimate)
- Weekend Collections ' 20 crore (approx)
