The city's canines are pampered like anything
By Ashlesha Athavale
Get a fancy haircut, buy shampoos, dresses, shoes, deodorants... the list is endless. But you are mistaken if you thought this is the 'things to do' list of a woman. It's the list of a dog owner. That's right, for his pooch, Canis familiaris.
Pampering your pooch seems to be the latest trend among Mumbai's dog lovers. So buying a strawberry scented shampoo at Rs 500 for your furry friend is just like buying a shampoo for yourself. But while some people may term this behaviour as madness, another way to see it could be that dog is man's best friend. The late author James Herriot couldn't live without dogs. Shivaji Maharaj's pet dog is known to have jumped into his funeral pyre.

Dogs have always been by man's side, as working dogs. There are police dogs, dogs for the visually challenged, hearing ear dogs, the jobs are endless. So why not pamper an animal that gives humans so much love? No wonder actor Rekha once termed dogs as 'furry human beings'. A visit to any dog specialty store proves her right. There is an array of products for dogs, which are based on products for humans. Actress Shweta Kwatra is also part of this craze. She owns a Lhasa apso, gifted to her by her husband, actor Manav Gohil. "I adore Mowgli! I send him to Tailwaggers [dog salon] twice a month for a bath. I also deck him up with different coloured clips," says Shweta.
