New Delhi: There is something genuine about Aditya Roy Kapur. In an otherwise done to death, prolonged romantic saga 'Ashiqui 2', the only person who stands out is Roy Kapur, who gives a very confident performance as the self destructive singing superstar.
So what's 'Aashiqui 2' all about? A reigning superstar, with multiple platinum discs to his credit, seeks for peace and solace and drowns himself in alcohol. A chance meeting with a small time bar singer, the superstar falls in love with her and decides to make her a big Bollywood singer while ignoring his own career which subsequently leads to his downfall.
The film is predictable from the word go. The pace of the film is slow and apart from the music- which is absolutely splendid - the film falters at many points. But somehow, Roy Kapur manages to make 'Aashiqui 2' worth a watch.

1) Rahul Jaykar (Aditya Roy Kapur) is similar to Janardhan Jakhar of Imitiaz Ali's 'Rockstar'. He has the fame, the money and big records under his belt, yet RJ (as he is popularly called) yearns for peace and stability. In the very beginning of the film, Roy Kapur stumbles upon a 'cheap' beer bar in Goa where he finds the beautiful Arohi singing one his songs. Mesmerised by her voice, Roy Kapur's character in semi drunk state smiles and sings along- something that comes across almost naturally when one hears a familiar tune. The moment is subtle and one can almost miss it, but Roy Kapur makes it a sweet one.
2) While Arohi is a talented singer, she is under confident. The scenes where RJ stands outside her recording studio booth, egging her to sing with her heart are endearing. One particular scene where RJ after realising his own career is finished comes to meet Arohi and encourages her sing particularly stands out.
3) During the second half, RJ slowly realises that his career is on the downhill and that his has no money left in his bank account. In a particular scene, after his credit card gets rejected at the bar, a drunk RJ simply just laughs out of helplessness.
4) Emotional scenes are always tricky. And in several instances, actors tend to go overboard with their theatrics in the process making the scene cringe worthy. Much like Kangana Ranaut had done with Mohit Suri's 'Woh Lamhe'. But a relative newcomer like Roy Kapur doesn't go over the top and emotes the right amount.
5) We have known him as the affable VJ on Channel V and the goofy guy who goes back in time to unite his parents in Vipul Shah's 'Action Replay'. His role in 'Aashiqui 2' is a stark contrast from his previous outings at the big screen. And being the lead of the film, Roy Kapur takes the film forward with his performance even though a weak script mars the film to quite an extent.
He already has girls swooning over him and with the right kind of break, we might just have a strong contender for next superstar, along with Ayushmann Khurrana, Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh.
I have become a huge fan of ARK after watching Aashiqui 2!
He is one hell of an actor!
