Mission 50: Boys Will Be Boys
Heer stared at the dining room table in complete awe. "What are you doing? Sit down," Prem stated as he put a large serving vessel of rice on the dining table. There was palak paneer, malai kofta, and chicken curry already there. "Are you going to stand and have your dinner? Sit down Pumpkin." Heer glanced at him and then back down at the table of food. She pulled the chair out and quietly sat down. Prem rushed back into the kitchen and came out with two glasses of water. "Eat...eat...don't wait," Prem smiled. Heer sat down and began serving herself dinner. She was surprised by the taste. It was good. Prem soon sat down to enjoy the meal with her.
There was a comfortable silence that fell between the couple as they sat in the dining room eating. Eventually Heer started asking questions regarding the food. "This malai kofta is really good."
"Thank you," Prem beamed.
"Maybe I should make you cook more often now," Heer replied. Prem gave a half grin and then looked on in concern as to why his wife was getting up from the table. "I'm going to get some more water."
Prem stood up to protest. "I'll get it for you Pumpkin."
"No-no, you should sit down and enjoy. You've cooked the entire meal. I'm just going to fill a pitcher of water for us to use," Heer explained and then entered the kitchen.
Prem sat back down and continued eating his food but he would glance over at the kitchen doorway every so often wondering when she would return. A few minutes later Heer came back and refilled their waters. "So, how did you make this malai kofta? It's very different."
"Different? It's just the usual stuff you put into it," Prem answered.
"Does it have paneer?"
"Of course," Prem replied.
"Potato?" Heer asked.
"No potatoes."
"No potatoes and just paneer?" Heer repeated. Her husband gave an affirmative nod. "Oh," Heer simply said and then continued talking, "You know there is this new Indian restaurant that opened. I was thinking before you started cooking that we needed to go try it out. Maybe another night?"
"It's not very good," Prem replied. "I've read the reviews."
"Oh? I read the reviews too and they have been mostly positive," Heer challenged. She saw her husband give a nervous twitch. "Everyone raves about the malai kofta."
"Oh," Prem replied and looked down at his plate of food.
"I want to try it out. See if their malai kofta can even compare with my husband's malai kofta."
"They are a restaurant."
"Just because they are a restaurant doesn't mean they will automatically have the best," Heer reasoned. "So should we go next weekend? We should invite the entire family. It would be nice to have a nice family dinner together, don't you think?"
Prem gave a nervous smile. "Well, it's a new restaurant so they must be really busy...you know...everyone must be rushing over there to try the new place. We don't have to go now."
"When?" Heer inquired her eyes staring straight at her husband.
Prem coughed and glanced downward towards his glass of water. He could feel his wife's eyes boring into his head as he timidly asked, "Want more water? I think the food is kind of spicy...put too much spice..."
"So," Heer continued as she crossed her arms, "How much do you think a malai kofta dish like this would cost? $13.95? $14.95?"
"Around $13.00..." Prem said and then took a long drink of water.
"Did you happen to make kheer while you were in the kitchen slaving away?"
"I wasn't slaving..."
"You were just having fun? Boiling water and making a mess?" Heer accused. "I found the receipt."
"Pumpkin, I wanted it to be a surprise," Prem answered giving a hopeful smile.
Heer sighed, "You wasted all those vegetables Prem!"
"I didn't," shaking his head adamantly. "I cut them up and put them in Ziploc bags. Next time with Arhan is hungry you already have pre cut celery and carrot sticks." He beamed a smile like he had just discovered the answer to world peace. He was feeling very proud.
"You could have just told me that you were going to order Indian," Heer replied.
Prem frowned, "You know I can't cook many things. I didn't have all the ingredients to make you that chicken capresse dish you like. We don't have any oregano."
"I would have been fine with anything Prem," Heer replied. She then gave a disheartened sigh that she had been so hard on her husband. "Pancake, you don't have to do anything special for me."
"But I wanted to," rubbing the back of his head sheepishly, "I guess this surprise didn't work out so great."
Heer leaned over and gave her husband a kiss on the cheek. She held his hand and warmly spoke. "I have the best husband in the world." Prem gave a shy grin and looked down at the table. "Who's going to give me all the kheer and clean up the kitchen?" She giggled at the way Prem's head shot up and the intense look he was giving her. "I was only kidding." Heer then got up from her chair and motioned with her hands for Prem to move his seat back a little. She then comfortably sat horizontally on his lap. She picked up his spoon and carried it towards his mouth. "Eat Pancake." Prem grinned and obediently opened his mouth. He then took the spoon from her hand so he could feed her as well. Heer gladly took her spoonful of food and smiled. Prem kissed her cheek and then nuzzled her neck making her laugh. "Prem!" Heer tried to get up but his arms were wrapped around her.
"Pumpkin..." Prem said with a cheesy chuckle. "You're not going anywhere." He then continued to playfully attack her neck. Heer rubbed the back of his head and just laughed.
Bhavika rubbed her nose with her hand as she stood in the front yard. She then inhaled sharply and scrunched her nose as she let out a loud sneeze. "Bless you Bhavi," Heer said as she handed her daughter a small tea cup. They were out on the front lawn playing "tea time." Bhavi took an imaginary sip of her tea and beamed, "It tastes good Mama!" Heer smiled and offered her a plate of toy biscuits.
Kiran grinned proudly as he watched his three grandsons play catch with him. He clapped his hands when Arhan caught the ball that Ayaan had tossed. "Good job Ayaan! Good job, it was a nice throw. Good catch Arhan."
"Grandpa?"
"Yes, Arun?" Kiran replied.
"Is it okay if we stop? I'm kind of thirsty and hungry." Kiran couldn't help but chuckle softly; after all it was generally Arhan complaining about being hungry.
"Snack time?" Arhan squealed with delight, "Can we have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches?"
"Milk," Ayaan requested. "I want milk."
Kiran turned towards his daughter-in-law and said, "Heer, do you think it's time for a snack?"
Heer glanced at her watch and replied, "I think it's a perfect time for a snack." She heard her children cheer in happiness at her announcement and began walking to the front door. "Remember Papa is sleeping be very quiet when you enter the house. Everyone must wash their hands."
"Yes Mama!" the boys yelled as they rushed into the house behind their grandfather.
Heer held out her hand so her daughter could hold onto it as they gently entered the home. Kiran reminded the brothers to be quiet as they queued in line to the downstairs bathroom to wash their hands. Arun stepped back and let his sister come in front so she could wash her hands before him. Heer beamed a proud smile and lovingly ruffled her eldest son's hair. "Dad, I'm going to go up and check on Prem." Kiran nodded as he instructed Ayaan to step on the little step stool so he could reach the faucet and wash his hands.
Heer tip-toed up the stairs and opened the master bedroom to see her husband still soundly sleeping. He had woken up at 4:00am to attend a Saturday morning training session that started at 5:30. He did not come back home until 12:30pm. When he came home he went straight to the bathroom and took a quick shower before falling into bed to sleep. Heer was worried that he hadn't eaten lunch but he assured her that he had grabbed something from McDonald's before coming home. He just wanted to sleep. Kiran and her decided it was best that they took the children and go outside and play so Prem could get his rest.
"Prem?" she cautiously asked as she walked closer to the bed. "Prem?" she softly comb her hand through his thick hair. "Don't you think it's time to wake up? It's around 4:30." She saw him stir softly and groggily open his eyes. "I think you should get up. I know you're tired but get up for a couple of hours at least and then you go back to bed. The kids just came in and I'm going to make them a snack. I was thinking peanut butter and celery sticks with raisins...what do the kids call them...ants on a log...why don't you join us?" Prem remained silent but sat up. He glanced at his wife and then lowered his eyes just staring off into space. Heer softly chortled and placed her hand on his cheek. "Do you want anything to eat?"
He shook his head and simply replied, "I'll have a glass of milk."
"Ayaan wanted the same thing. Why don't you help me and pour him a glass?"
Prem nodded and slung the covers open and slide\ out of bed. He smirked as he quickly grabbed his wife's arm pulling her back towards him. He hugged her from behind and sighed. "Aren't you going to ask what I was dreaming about?"
"Oh...what were you dreaming about?" giving a knowing smile.
"We were on a deserted island...just you and me. And there were coconuts everywhere...I built a house out of the palm trees...I'd go catch us fish while you gathered bananas and other fruits you found on the island...and we'd make coconut fish curry..."
"Are you sure you're not hungry? You seemed to be dreaming a lot about food," Heer replied.
"No, I'm fine," Prem answered and continued with his story, "We'd spend the mornings watching the sunrise and the late afternoons watching the sunset. It was beautiful just you and me...living all alone...no one to interrupt us. It was fantastic."
"So, what are you trying to say is?"
"I think my dream is telling me that we should go on a vacation. Just you and me...no kids...a chance for us to recharge," Prem suggested.
"You're serious leave our children?" Heer asked.
"Why not? Dad or your parents can help look after then. I'm just saying a quick four day trip somewhere where we don't have to worry about being parents...we are just Heer and Prem...Pumpkin and Pancake. Don't you think it would be nice to take a breather? Last weekend was nice but let's make it a little longer."
"Five days?" Heer softly suggested as she turned around to face him.
"Five days...if you want we can make it a full week," Prem stated. He recognized the guilt in her eyes and added, "Just think about it Pumpkin. We don't have to decide now."
Heer's eyebrows crinkled in thought pondering over her husband's suggestion. "I---" Her reply was cut short when they heard a loud thud. It sounded as if someone had fallen from the stairs. They rushed out the door recognizing one of their children's voices was screaming in pain.
"Mama!" Kiran huddled closely to his grandson trying his best to calm him down. "It hurts..."
"Ayaan?!" Heer shouted with concern as she saw her son crying holding his arm. Just as she stepped off the staircase she nearly lost her balance and began falling backwards. She would have landed on the stairs if it wasn't for Prem catching her before she did.
Prem's surprised but concern eyes soon faded into stern anger. Someone had left their skateboard at the foot of the staircase again. Heer stood up and glanced downward noticing the same thing as her husband. "Arun!" she snapped. "How many times have we told you not to put your skateboard here?" Arun swallowed hard as he looked at his parent's furious faces. "You know the rules of this house...and now look at what's happened because of your carelessness." Heer continued. Ayaan let out another loud squeal forcing her to direct her attention towards him. She was soon crouched on the floor inspecting Ayaan's bruises. "I think he's broken his arm."
"Are you sure?" Kiran inquired.
Prem gave a disapproving look at his eldest and simply stated, "We'll talk about this later."
Arun nodded and glanced worriedly at the floor where Ayaan laid. His parents were checking his arm. Each time they moved it Ayaan's cries grew louder making everyone concern. Arun gently turned around and gave a reassuring nod to Arhan who was fidgeting in fear. He had a guilty look in his eyes.
"We need to go to the hospital," Prem said. "We need to wrap his arm in something tight to prevent movement."
Kiran got up and went to the linen closet and pulled out a long white cloth. He handed to his son who proceeded to make a sling. "It hurts!" Ayaan cried.
"I know beta," Heer soothed as she caressed his hair. "Let Papa fix your arm so it won't hurt as much."
Prem finished making the sling for Ayaan's arm and then carefully picked him up hugging him close. "It will be better soon...we're going to go see the doctor," Prem calmly stated.
Ayaan just buried his head into his shoulder and sniffled. "It hurts...Papa...it hurts..."
"Heer," Prem simply called. Understanding his meaning she quickly got the car keys and they both left the house.
Kiran stood by the doorway and shouted as they were leaving, "I'll take care of things. I'll call your parents Heer."
Prem glanced over at Heer and gave a gentle sigh of relief. Ayaan was cradled comfortably in his mother's arms with a look of content. It was a vast difference from two hours ago. His right arm was in a sling while his left hand held a green lollipop. He was a little drowsy from the pain medication they had given him but he seemed a little more at ease. He inserted the lollipop into his mouth and began sucking. Normally, Prem and Heer wouldn't have allowed him to eat candy before dinner, but considering the circumstances they wanted to keep him calm and happy.
"Thank you so much Dr. Lewis," Prem said with heartfelt thanks.
"No need to thank me. I'm glad we got Ayaan fixed up. He should be better in no time," he smiled with encouragement.
"I'm sure you've seen your share of frantic parents' I hope we weren't too bad. Please forgive us if we seemed a little harsh at times. It's the first time something like this happened to us," Heer apologized.
"No need to say anything. You're right I've seen my share but you can relax you weren't the worst...you guys were pretty calm compared to some," Dr. Lewis chuckled. He then walked towards the door and opened it, "I'll see you in two weeks. If the cast gets torn in any way call us and make an appointment so we can get that fixed promptly. Make sure he doesn't try to itch inside."
"We'll keep an eye on him. Thank you again Dr Lewis," Prem said shaking his hand.
He just smiled and then waved goodbye. Ayaan took his lollipop out of his mouth and shook it back and forth like he was waving farewell. "Say thank you to Dr. Lewis," Heer instructed.
"Bye-bye Dr. Lewis. Thank you for the lollipop," Ayaan said.
"You're very welcome Ayaan. You take care now and I'll see you soon."
The Junejas soon left the pediatricians' office and were walking towards their car. Prem looked at his wife and then his son and gave a soft smile as he held the passenger side door open. He leaned over and gave a gentle kiss on Ayaan's forehead. "You had us really scared there Champ."
"Papa" Ayaan held the lollipop out of his mouth and offered it his father.
Prem grinned and opened his mouth letting him insert it inside. He closed his mouth and held onto the sweet concoction as his son pulled it back with a giggle. "It tastes nice," he replied. "When we get home we'll have macaroni and cheese." Ayaan shook his head making Prem frown, "No?"
"What would Ayaan like?" Heer inquired.
"Mama's curry and dal," he replied before putting the lollipop back into his mouth.
"Do we have time for that?" Prem asked.
"Let's call home and see who's there. I have a feeling Mom's there," Heer said. "Let's see what she made."
Prem nodded and helped his wife and son get comfortable in their seat before getting into the car. He carefully looked around him before backing the SUV out of the parking space. He then called the house through the Bluetooth in the car. The phone rang three times before someone picked up the phone. "Hello?"
"Mom," Prem greeted.
"Prem, how is everything? Is Ayaan okay?"
"Mama, Ayaan is fine now. He broke his right arm," Heer informed.
"Oh no," Teji gasped.
"Mama, what did you make for dinner?"
"I made curry and dal. Why? Does Ayaan want something else to eat?" Teji asked with concern. "I can make something right now just tell me what he wants to eat."
"No, no'that's prefect. That's what he wanted to eat," Heer said.
"Okay."
"Mom, we'll see you soon at the house," Prem stated.
"Okay, you drive safe. I'll see you in a few."
"Bye Mama," Heer replied before they hung up the call.
Prem stirred uneasily underneath the comforter for a few minutes before he got up from bed. He glanced over to his side thankful that his wife was still sleeping. He quietly left the room and headed down stairs to get a glass of water to drink. He was really thirsty. The house was silent and relatively dark. He used the night lights in the hallway to make his way down the stairs and into the living room. His ears perked to a soft scraping sound as he came to the end of the staircase. It became louder as he got closer to the kitchen. Prem's eyes went wide as he entered the room completely taken aback at what he was seeing. "Arhan? Beta, what are you doing? Why are you up so late?"
Arhan turned from the open refrigerator door and stuttered nervously, "Um...nnnothing...Pa-Papa..."
Prem glanced at the plastic Ziploc bag that was being filled with grapes in Arhan's hands then to the Spiderman suitcase sitting behind him, before returning his gaze on his son's face. What exactly was going on here? "Arhan, why is your Spiderman suitcase here in the kitchen?"
There was a moment's hesitation before the five year old sighed and replied, "I have to go."
"Go? Go where? Where are you going?" Prem inquired with concern. His voice was soft despite the way he was feeling inside. He didn't want to scare his son while he was trying figure out what the issue was.
"She's going to be upset. I should go," Arhan said.
"Who's going to be upset?" Prem asked again.
The lights suddenly turned on causing father and son to turn and look at the doorway. Heer was standing by the light switch with a confused expression on her face. "Arhan? What are you doing Beta?"
Without a word Arhan let the refrigerator door close shut. He then opened the front pocket of his suitcase and stuffed the Ziploc bag of grapes inside. He wheeled the rolling suitcase around and took the handle into his hands ready to walk away.
"Arhan, you haven't answered my question," Prem probed. "Tell Papa what is wrong."
"I should go. Mama and you will be very upset at me. I did something really bad," Arhan said and started to roll his little suitcase behind him as he walked out of the kitchen. Husband and wife gave curious glances at each other before returning their attention on their child.
Prem took in a breath and was about to inquire further when he took a pause as he noticed the state of his son's suitcase. There was a corner of a blanket sticking out of the zipper and was dragging on the floor. He couldn't help but grin a little. He looked at Heer who was covering her mouth trying to suppress her own giggles. "Um, Arhan...can you tell Mama and me where you are going?"
"I'm going to Nani's house."
"That's very far away," Prem reasoned. "Are you going to walk there?"
"I have no choice."
Prem furrowed his eyebrows at his son's statement. "It's really dark outside."
Arhan stopped walking and opened another pocket in his suitcase and pulled out a medium sized flashlight. "I have a flashlight Papa."
"I see. Well, since Mama and I are up we can drive you there." Heer looked in alarm at her husband's suggestion. Prem signaled to her to be calm as he had an actual reason for making such a suggestion. "Will you let us drive you to Nani's house?" Arhan turned around with a slightly confused expression on his face. "It's really dark outside and it would make Mama and I feel a lot better if we came with you. Actually, can you wait until the morning? Must you go now? "
Arhan looked at his mother and then at his father and lowered his head shaking it slowly. "I have to go. Mama and Papa you will be very upset with me."
Heer couldn't take it anymore and crouched down next to her son. "Will you please tell us why you are leaving? Mama and Papa are very worried right now. We love you so much."
Arhan continued to stare down at the ground and gently shook his head. "No, you will be very upset with me. I did a very bad thing. You won't let me live here with you. I must go."
"How do you know if you won't tell us?" Prem inquired as he crouched down next to Heer.
"No," Arhan replied with a sniffle.
"It's okay tell Mama and Papa," Prem encouraged.
"You won't yell?" Arhan lifted his head with a tearful expression on his face.
"We won't yell," Heer replied shaking her head in agreement.
"I-I- I broke Ayaan's arm. It wasn't Arun Bhaiya's fault. I brought the skateboard in and I forgot to put it away like we are suppose to. I didn't mean for it to happen. I'm sorry. Mama...Papa you're upset with me, na? This is why I have to leave. I've been a very bad boy. I will go and live at Nani's house."
Prem and Heer exchanged glances unsure how they should respond to such a revelation. After they had returned from the hospital and made sure everyone had been fed their dinner, they had a very long and serious talk with Arun. He never said a word and just quietly nodded his head and accepted his punishment. He was grounded for two weeks. He could not go over to his friends' house to play. He could only go to school and come back home. He was not allowed to watch TV and all his computer and video games were taken away. He was only allowed to read in his room. Arhan took his parent's silence as an indication that they were extremely upset with him. He started walking again rolling his Spiderman suitcase with him to the front door.
Heer immediately stopped her son and gave him a tender look. "You mad Mama?" Arhan tearfully cried.
"You understand why I tell you all not to leave the skateboard laying around the house? Especially by the staircase?" Heer asked.
Arhan nodded his head. "So we do not fall and hurt ourselves. I'm sorry Mama. I was so scared and then Arun Bhaiya was yelled at...and..I did not know what to do. Arun Bhaiya told me it was okay. But he did not do anything wrong. I did. I'm sorry."
"You do not have to go and live at Nani's house."
"I don't?" Arhan innocently asked.
"No," Heer stated shaking her head. Prem took the suitcase from his son's hand and pushed it off to the side. "You learned a big lesson today." Arhan nodded his head in agreement and continued to look at his parents with watery eyes. "That is the most important thing. We do not make rules for fun. We do them because we care about you and want to keep you safe. And if you had left Papa and I would have been very sad. We love you a lot." Heer opened her arms signaling to her son that it was time for a hug. Arhan collapsed into her and smiled taking in the warmth and love he felt from her at the moment. "Okay, now it is time for bed," Heer stated after the hug had finished.
Arhan nodded. Prem ruffled his son's head and then picked him up. Arhan immediately laid his head on his shoulder and blinked sleepily. He was suddenly feeling extremely tired. Heer gave a soft grin and followed father and son up the stairs.
