The Power of Love ' Part Two
'Kumud'Saras whispered, almost pushing Kumud away from him. 'What happened?' He asked,
lifting her face with his fingertips. Flustered at what happened Kumud focused her gaze to the floor. She felt the throbbing of her heart beats could be overheard from outside the room. Smiling through her tears she turned around and crossed her hands across her chest.
'I think you were right about us!' breaking the silence Kumud spoke softly. 'There is something that stops you from leaving' expecting Saras to come face-to-face with her she continued. She has seen the longing from his eyes many times, so she could never be wrong about him.
To her astonishment, Saras neither said a word nor did he come to her. She turned around and saw him standing still, puzzled. She narrowed her eyes and looked at his deep eyes questioningly. She could not understand his expressions.
'Saras!' Kumud held his hand with her trembling hand.
'Stay away! Just stay away from me!' Saras yelled, pulling his hand from her slight grip. 'We are just friends. Nothing more!'
'Friends?' Kumud muttered. No. He was lying. She saw the anguish he was going through as he said they are just friends. She knew he wanted to distant himself from her, but why?
Slowly Kumud stepped out of the room, wiped off her tears and forced herself to smile. Dhugba grabbed her by hand before she could cross the hallway and asked about the matter. Knowing that she could not hide anything from her badimaa, Kumud muttered 'Everything is ruined, badimaa'. Unable to stop her tears from falling, she continued between sobs 'What did I do wrong? Please badimaa, tell me what have I done?' She could not stop herself from shaking in anger as she remembered his words. Alright, Mr.SaraswatiChnadra. She knew the limit, it was he who made her to cross the limits, she thought. It was him who made her believe they were more than friends. He does not know the real Kumud Sundari. She was already humiliated by his rejection in the beginning and she won't let him does it again, she promised to herself. If they were not meant to be together she will accept it that way and make a life for her alone.
Couple of days passed by uneventfully as they managed to keep their distance from each other. Saras knew he should stay away from Kumud, but still wanted to be near her. He tried to focus everything besides her smile, laughter and the twists in her hair. He knew has developed feelings against him wanting to. He had promised himself to keep every woman at bay. To protect him from the feelings and the emotionally charged moments he spent with Kumud, she had broken his armour. She has turned his world upside down with her grace and innocence. He was scared that Kumud might dupe him like his father had duped his mother. But these few days he has come to known how different she was and how selfless she was. She was different from all the women he had known. He will never be able to erase her from his life. He should remember that they are bound together by destiny. He was going to search for her as the distance between them could kill him.
Saras hurried into upstairs and slowly pushed the door making a squeaky noise. Kumud was fast asleep on the bed beside Kusum. His heart skipped a beat or two seeing Kumud sleeping so peacefully. He stretched out his arm wanting to move aside the trails of hair brushing against her cheeks. It was then Saras received a phone call from Sunny bringing him back to his senses.
Kumud searched everywhere to catch a glimpse of Saras before going to the Mandir. She walked in a trance to where she thought he was. She knew she was never wrong where Saras was concerned, she was going to search for him but ended up in the empty room. Despaired, Kumud came out and headed towards the temple.
'Beti, poori dil se mannat mang, wo poori hoti hai' the Priest gave his blessings to Kumud, comforting her troubled heart. She closed her eyes and prayed for peace and strength, for her family, for Saras. She opened her eyes as she finished her prayers and saw the man of her thoughts looking at her with pleading eyes; his eyes apologizing her, urging to talk to her and admitting his feelings for her.
Saras stretched out his arm to Kumud, but she turned and walked away. He stood still, unable to comprehend what was happening. Kumud has left, leaving him with and outstretched arm. He then heard his best friend speaking behind his ear. 'Go Saras, go! Go to Kumud and make her yours' Sunny nodded in agreement with his own words and gave a slight push to the stock still
Saras.
Saras started running almost from inside the temple, forgetting his shoes he left at the doorstep of the Mandir, to tell her that he has feelings for her, that he loved her. His flashback to all the times Kumud helped him, feeding him the food, saved him while going against her very own brother. She was courageous; she taught him the beauty of life and to overcome the darkness of the past. She had given him a new meaning of life. How could he be so blind not to see what she meant to him? Darting his eyes everywhere in search of her, he brushed off the tears of joy shimmered from his eyes as he continued running.
