She looked like an angel as a peaceful look took upon her, her face glowing with white radiance. Asad looked at her his eyes red and slightly swollen. 'It's all my fault, my fault' Asad thought over and over again. He cursed himself for not sending someone on behalf of them, he cursed himself for sending her in there alone, and he cursed himself for hurting her, over and over again. He hated him-self. He looked up and prayed for her well being. "Ya'Allah, iski madat kar. Isko jhaldi se tik kar de, jo bi uske dhook hai who mujhe de dhe bus usko teek kar de". Asad looked back at her, as she lay there on the hospital bed. She looked so innocent, so pure, so perfect.
When she had fainted at the Siddiqui house his heart was in his throat. It felt as if someone had ripped him into shreds. As he caught her just before she hit the ground, he sensed how light she felt. 'No' he silently screamed. She couldn't leave him, she couldn't. Asad was barely aware of his audience, his surroundings. His thoughts revolved around her and only her. He felt her pulse, painfully slow, she felt a little warm, no not warm, really hot. She was starting to burn up. Asad lifted her into his arms and carried her out of that bewitched house as fast as he could calling to her. He gently placed her into the passenger seats, securing the seat belt. He thought he saw a slight movement in her fingers and once again called to her, a little more panicked this time. She hadn't responded the slightest yet. Asad ran to the other side of the car and got in. He didn't bother putting on his seat belt and drove out.
As the members of the Siddiqui family reached outside they heard the screeches of tires as Asad raced out. What's going on Ayaan wondered. Who was this girl? Why was she at their home? Why did she just faint? And more importantly why was bhaijaan freaking out so much? Ayaan turned to see his family staring at the spot in which Asad's car had just been with surprised and worried looks upon their faces. "Ami, mein bhaijaan ke pas jara ha hoo" Ayaan announced. Before his family could reply he turned around and made way to his bike. "Rukye Ayaan, hum bhi aap ke saat chalte he" Shireen responded. Ayaan then got the car and Nikhat also joined. Rashid wanted to go with his wife, daughter and son to see his dost- he was just about too as well when he remembered Asad. Rashid had never seen Asad like this, not even last night in the factory when he had almost shot his own father. Rashid stepped back "Aap log jaye mein bad mein atta hoo" he said. While Shireen, Ayaan and Nikhat left, the rest of the family returned inside. They had no idea about what had just happened.
Razia in her room was pacing back and forth. Who was that girl? Why did she faint? What connection does she have to Asad which resulted in him losing it? Razia pondered over Zoya as Rashid also paced in his own room. What had happened to his dost all of a sudden? Had she told Ayaan anything against him? He hoped she would get well soon.
Asad reached the hospital's emergency ward entrance; he flew out of his car and called for a doctor. Luckily for him, one was there ready at his disposal. Asad opened Zoya's door and carefully lifted her out. He gently placed her on the stretcher that had been brought out and went with the ward boys and doctors into the hospital. As the doctor checked Zoya, Asad was right by her side. He didn't move, not a step, even when he was asked to give the doctors some time. Asad refused and told the doctor to carry on for he wasn't going to move and no one could make him. The doctor sighed and began to work. He checked Zoya and Asad held his breath. 'Please be okay' he silently begged. Suddenly, Zoya began to mumble. She sounded scared, panicked. She began to fidget. Asad called her name "Zoya,". The doctor suddenly gave her an injection. As Zoya calmed down and drifted off again into a peaceful sleep Asad snapped at the doctor. "What was that for, what's wrong with her, will she be okay- why aren't you answering" Asad almost shouted. The doctor put his hand on Asad's shoulder and requested him to calm down. Once Asad shut his mouth and seemed calmer, he began to answer his questions. "Look Mr. Khan, nothing is seriously wrong with her. She fainted because of stress and shock nothing else, She is perfectly fine. She just needs some time to recuperate that's all. But we would like to keep her here for a few hours- at least until she regains conscious. If you remember just a few minutes before, she was mumbling and restless while unconscious. She seems to be having nightmares, now I don't know if that was a onetime thing or not but because it seems so I would like for her to stay here- now if you'll excuse me I'll come back soon to check on her." The doctor signaled for the ward boys to shift Zoya into a private room. As the doctor left, Asad thanked him and followed Zoya out.
Ayaan, Shireen and Nikhat reached the hospital. They asked for Asad Ahmed Khan who had just come with an unconscious girl. As the receptionist pointed them towards the direction of Zoya's room, Ayaan thanked her and along with his mom and sister made his way there. Inside the room, Zoya had just been shifted onto the room's bed. As the ward boys left, Asad walked over to her. He looked at her and a wave of fresh new tears made their way to his eyes. He didn't fully understand why he was crying so much- she was okay, alive and that was what mattered. Asad reached out and straightened Zoya; he fixed her blanket and made sure she was comfortable. As he sat down on the chair beside the bed he spoke in what seems as a whisper "I'm so sorry Zoya". Asad shook slightly as the tears slowly fell down his face. Asad heard a knock on the door and quickly wiped away the tears. He turned around and was surprised to see Ayaan with Shireen and Nikhat behind him. Asad led the three outside for he didn't want to disturb Zoya. "Bhaijaan," Ayaan began. Asad stopped him. "Abhi nahi Ayaan please. Mujhe abi kisi se baat karne ka mood nahi hai. Vase bhi, mujhe abhi be ami ko phone karna hai, wo ghar pe pareshan horahi hogi". As Asad walked back into the room, Ayaan stood there shocked. Had his brother just completely rejected him without hearing him out? Something was seriously wrong- bhaijaan had never acted like this before, not even during the time when Dilshad was in the hospital. Shireen looked into the room through the window and wondered aloud "Ye sab kya hogaya? Yeh ladki hai koon aur Asad iski halat se itna pareshan kyu hai- Ya' Allah, yeh tik to hoja ye gi na Ayaan"? Nikhat went to her mom and reassured her. She turned to Ayaan and told him that she was going to go home with Shireet, they would take a Taxi as Ayaan was needed in the hospital because Asad will feel like talking and Ayaan is the only one to whom he will speak too. Ayaan watched as his sister led his mom out. He then turned back to the window on the door. He looked at his brother who seems more tense than usual. Why wouldn't he be Ayaan thought, he's in a hospital. Ayaan silently creaked open the door, enough to hear what Asad was saying.
Not realizing that Ayaan was still there, able to hear his words, Asad turned to Zoya. "Aap kab uthe gi, oth jaye naa..please" Asad pleaded. Asad leaned towards Zoya and slowly moved her bangs out of her face. As he was moving his hand back, Zoya's hand caught his. Asad looked at her hands and didn't let go. "Mein kahi nahi jaooga" Asad replied. As Asad sat there, one hand in Zoya's hand he began to doze off. Surprisingly it was only 1 in the afternoon and yet Asad Ahmed Khan had fallen fast asleep, his head on the bed besides Zoya Farooqui. Ayaan looked on in awe. There had to be more to this story.
Ayaan closed the door and sat outside. Today's events came back to him. Why did that girl faint, forget that, why was she even in the Siddiqui house? Ayaan sighed and leaned back. He was really confused and he wanted his bhaijaan to clear his doubts so badly. Unfortunately his bhaijaan seems to be preoccupied right now- no way was Ayaan going to be able to talk to him. Ayaan closed his eyes, took a deep breath and then reopened his eyes. He then got up and peeked into the room, Bhaijaan and the girl were both still asleep, they looked like a true couple, soul-mates. Ayaan was just about to look away when he got an idea. He turned around with a small smile and left the hospital.
On their way home, Shireen kept wondering about the girl. Who was she, what had happened to her? She thought back to how the girl seemed to shimmer with her smile and now, how she looked so…..lifeless in the hospital, pale and still. She turned to Nikhat, "aap ko kya lug ta hai, wo ladki hai con?" she asked. Nikhat looked at her mom and had a quick flashback to her elder brother's worried state. How he seemed and does seem extremely broken. She wasn't sure but she could have sworn that she saw his soul being ripped apart the moment he laid eyes on the unconscious, angelic (in a ghostly way) girl. "Ammi kya wo…." She began. Nikhat was hesitating- she didn't want to say something wrong, after all there was nothing to really prove her theory. "wo kya…..Nikhat?" Shireen asked. "Ammi jis thara se Asad bhaijaan us ladki ke liye ghabraye, jis tarike se wo unka naam pukara he tai, aapko nahi lag ta ke….ke who unki beevi ho sak ti hai, ya phir mangetar?" Nikhat asked uncertainly. Shireen's eyes widened, it was possible she thought. "Shayid" she answered.
Back at home, Najma was looking at the clock worried. It was getting late, almost 4pm and Zoya hadn't returned home yet; she wasn't even answering her phone. Najma had just put Dilshad to sleep with much difficulty when she came to the living room. She saw the time and wondered where Zoya could be. "Agar bhaijaan co pata chal gaya ki Zoya abi tak vapas nahi ayi hai to to vo phir se un pe naraz ho ja yengai." Najma thought. She sat there, lost in her thoughts, playing with the end of her duputta. She suddenly got up and began pacing. She had decided that today she was going to scold Zoya- why did that girl always end up getting in trouble? Najma stopped pacing, her eyes widened, what if Zoya was in trouble. Najma rushed to the house phone. She looked at it for a minute, took a deep breath and dialed.
Asad was sleeping as if he had never slept before. For some reason, Zoya's presence gave him a peaceful feeling. When his phone rang, his eyes flashed open and he grabbed his phone. He looked at Zoya, seeing as the phone did not disturb her, he slowly removed his hand from hers and walked outside. As he did, she stirred a little, he paused and once he was sure that she was still asleep, stepped out and put the phone to his ear. He took a deep breath, got his voice as calm as possible and said "Hello". "bhaijaan kaha hai aap" Najma asked. "Kyun, kya huwa Tamatar, tum itni pareshan kyu ho, Ammi tik hai na"? Asad's voice slowly began to fail him. Just before his voice cracked, Najma responded "Nahi, bhaijaan esa kuch nahi hoa hai, Ammi to sow rahi hai meine to bus ese hi", Asad relaxed as Najma said this. Everything was okay, but then why was Najma still sounding troubled. "bhaijaan wo actually Zoya…….Zoya abi tak ghar nahi ayi hai. Wo subah se gayi hai or pata nahi kaha hai wo apna phone bi nahi utarahi hai". Asad understood, Najma and Zoya had developed such a bond between each other that they were practically sisters, they could theoretically feel each other's emotions. "Najma, tum khameka pareshan ho rahi ho, Zoya tik hai unko kuch bi nahi howa hai. Vo mujhe mili to bus mere sath ghar ara hi he- lekin mera kuch urgent kam agaya aur isliye vo abhi bhi mere sath hai". Asad could hear Najma breathe a sigh of relief. Asad felt horrible, he had temporarily relieved Najma's fright regarding Zoya's safety but what would happen if they found out that she was in the hospital. Asad ended his call with Najma after assuring her a little more. He then turned around and watched Zoya through the window, he would have to make sure that Ammi and Tamatar didn't find out about this otherwise they might worry, more than Zoya would like. Asad had realized that Zoya would always be cheerful, she'd always take on other's pain onto herself yet she never let anyone take hers. She was an expert at tucking away her sorrows and showing the world only happiness- however, Asad could now see right through her. He knew Zoya would agree.
Asad walked back into the room just as Zoya was slowly coming to. Asad noticed her responsive behavior and sat down on the chair next to the bed. He gave his rare, half-smile "Ub aap kesi hai Zo….Ms. Farooqui" he asked. Zoya looked at Asad, she could see his eyes were red, from tears and engulfed in worry. She realized that Asad had just asked her something and she nodded yes. She suddenly had a strong need for water. As she slowly got up, Asad began to protest but knowing she would refuse, he instead helped her sit up. He realized that she may have wanted water and hands her the glass next to the bed. As she takes a sip she realizes that she's in a hospital. "Allah Miyan! What happened Mr. Khan, mein hospital mein kyu hoo"? She wondered softly. Asad looked up at her and told her what had happened. He told her how when he came in, she had collapsed, he had brought her to the hospital and the doctors had given her some medication and kept her under survey for a few hours. He mentioned how he told Najma that they had gone out on some work as it was urgent and she was also on her way home. She tried to place the water glass back on the table but Asad took it from her and placed it instead. "Thanks Mr. Khan, for everything including not telling Najma about what happened" Zoya said. Asad nodded his head in response. "Ms. Farooqui mein jan ta hoo ki aap shayud mujhe ye nahi bata na chahegi lekin phir bi mein aap se ek baar puch na chahta ho- kya howa ta aapko, aur ye kese saapne hai jo aap ko bar bar taklif deti rehti hai"? Asad asked softly and hesitantly.
Zoya looked away. She wasn't sure whether or not she should respond. She could hear the worry, care and genuine concern in Asad's voice. She wanted to tell him everything but she wasn't sure. She had never shared her story, her complete story with anyone. She looked back at him; she slowly looked into his eyes and was overwhelmed with the care she saw in them. Her heart fluttered, she felt frozen. *mitwa* Suddenly she heard a small cough. She jumped slightly, surprised and embarrassed. As she looked at the door she saw that it was the doctor. Asad also stepped back a little and looked at the doctor. Why did his heart almost jump out of his chest when his eyes met hers? The doctor walked in and smiled as she moved towards the monitors. "How are you feeling now?" she asked. Zoya forced herself to nod yes, she was still recovering from drowning in Asad's eyes. As the doctor checked Zoya, Asad looked at her. Her face, he noticed was filled with exhaustion and worry. She seemed confused. Zoya tried to avoid Asad's gaze as the doctor was completing the quick check-up but she couldn't help herself. She saw that he was still worried. She gave him a small smile hoping that it would make him fell less guilty. She knew him enough to understand that he was blaming himself for her condition. She wanted to just hug him and tell him that she was okay, that it wasn't his fault. She wanted to see her Akdu Ahmed Khan back- she just needed the perfect line to bring him back. "Well, Mrs. Khan aap bilkul teek hai ub aap ghar ja sakh ti" the doctor began. "Lekin ha, aap abhi bhi tori kumzor hai isliye mein chahti hoo ki aap kuch din ke liye zyada se zyada aram kare. Ok, to mein chalti ho aap bus meri nurse ke liye rukye woh aapke discharge papers leke arahi hai." With that, the doctor shook Asad's hand and left the room. Both Asad and Zoya were left there in utter shock.
Zoya had stopped listening to the doctor after the words "Mrs. Khan". 'She thought I was his wife?' Zoya asked herself; for some reason that made her want to smile. Asad looked at Zoya, she had a small smile on her face and this time her smile had reached all the way up to her eyes, just how he liked it. After the doctor had said "Mrs. Khan" he had also felt at peace and happy. He realized that Zoya had started smiling after the words Mrs. Khan as well. Asad couldn't help it, he again gave his rare smile which did not go unnoticed by Zoya. "Mr. Khan aap muskura rahe hai!" exclaimed Zoya. She couldn't believe her eyes, her Akdu Ahmed Khan was smiling. She gaped at him in wonder.
Asad realized this and quickly put on his frown, he walked up to Zoya and gently closed her mouth as her jaw seemed to be on the ground. "Ms. Farooqui aap ka dimag tik hai na?" he asked her in his Akdu yet slightly teasing voice. Zoya felt an electric shock go through her as she felt his fingers touch her. She mentally slapped and scolded herself to pull it together. "Mr. Khan unho nai muhe Mrs. Khan kuy kaha?" Asad looked at her. He wasn't sure what to say. He himself realized that he never said anything regarding his relationship to the patient (Zoya). He was surprised that the hospital had taken them as husband and wife. Even more surprising to him was how he found nothing wrong with it.
"Woh….woh….actually…." Asad began. As soon as Zoya heard the hesitation, she was miffed, her Jahapanah was stuttering. "Allah Miyan! Aaj to ye din zyada or zyada ajib hi hota ja raha hai" she wondered aloud. Asad looked at her, she was never going to change. Suddenly, the two were interrupted by a knock. Asad answered the door, it was the nurse. He then stepped back towards the couch in the corner of the room and waited for the nurse to leave. The nurse had placed her clipboard on the table beside the desk and was helping Zoya up. As Zoya placed her feet on the ground, she was overcome with slight dizziness; she didn't show it though. She then asked the nurse politely to give her some space as she would like to get up by herself. Zoya placed both hands on the bed and pushed herself up. She was then engulfed by immense dizziness. Asad saw that she was swaying a little and grabbed her arm just as she was about to fall "easy" he said as he helped her sit back down; he handed her the glass of water. The nurse turned to Zoya and said "aap abhi bhi tori kamzoor hai to aapko ek wheelchair mein jana ho ga. Doctor na kaha hai ke aapko zyada se zyada aram karna hoga tub hi aap ghar ja sak ti hai. So mein wheel chair lekein aa ti hoo". "No," shouted Zoya. "No wheelchair please, mein chal sakh ti ho but please no wheelchair" she said again. The nurse looked at her in surprise. Asad smirked. Here she was again being the strong girl, even in times like these she didn't give up, didn't want to appear weak. Asad turned to her and said with authority "kuy nahi, aapko wheelchair use karni hi parengi. Varna aap phir se ghir jayengi. Ab aap decide kigye ki aapko hospital me aur rookna hai ya phir ghar pe jana hai". Zoya gave him her puppy dog face and pleaded with him. Asad finally gave in, no wheel chair and no extended hospital stay but she wasn't going to walk. Asad told the nurse they were leaving as their family was expecting them. The nurse said okay and left. "Mr. Khan agar aap mujhe chalne nahi dengai aur hum yah rukhne bhi nahi wale hai to phir hum ghar kesai jayengai. App thori mujhe yeha sai uthake leki janewale hai" Zoya started to say. Asad had a grin on his face. Zoya stooped speaking and was shocked. "Mr. Khan are you mad??!!?? Aap mujhe uthake le ja nai walehai wo bhi sub ke saamne? Aap ke sar mein aaj koy chout ayi hai kya" Zoya half shrieked. Asad rolled his eyes and bit his bottom lip to keep himself from laughing out loud. She was nuts he concluded. With much difficulty, Asad returned to his face his serious look and said "Ms. Farooqui ye aap hi ka idea tha aap woh mut bulye. Aur mujhe bhi koy shock nahi hai aap ko uthanai ka who bhi sabh ke saamne. Aur agar log kuch sochengai to mere bare mein hi Allah janne kya sochenge. Aap bool rahi hai ki log mujhe jaante hai aapko ko nahi. Aur vase bhi aap ho hi ithni heavy ke mujhe to ghar jha ke massage ka intezam karna hoga."
Zoya looked at him in utter shock. He had called her fat. She shrieked "Mr. Khan aap.." Asad quickly put his hand over her mouth to keep her from getting them kicked out. "Aap ke paas such mein dimag nahi hai. Aap hospital mein hai ye bhat mut bhoolye". He calmly said. Zoya shut up but glared at him. Asad looked at her and just as he was about to say something else, his eyes saw the clock. It was 6pm."Cheh baj gayai" he said in surprise. Zoya turned around and her eyes widened. Asad's hands moved from her mouth and she said "hume ghar chul na chahye phoophi aur Najma wait karahai hongai". Asad helped Zoya up and looked at her. "Ms. Farooqui aap phikur mat kijye mein aapko gira nahi doonga- aap itni bhi moti nahi hai" he smirked. Zoya looked at Asad with an irritated look. "Mujhe lagta hai ki aap na apna dimag kahi bhool ke agayai hai- tub hi to mera subha se itna kyal rukhrahe hai". Asad and Zoya stared at each other *mitwa*. The two were then snapped out of their worlds when they heard some child cry in the distance. Asad slowly lifted Zoya up and the two exited the room.
Zoya didn't want to admit it but she loved being in her Mr. Khan's arms. She felt secure, happy, loved and as if she belonged every time he held her. She couldn't help but blush and smile a little. Asad looked at Zoya and saw this- to the hell with my Akdu style today he thought. "Aapko shurmana bhi aata hai- kya bat hai, kuch kaas bat hai kya?" he whispered. Zoya blushed deeper. This was getting awkward. She tried hard to ignore the people's stares. It wasn't easy but as soon as she heard Asad's voice she forgot everything. "Aap ki aakhe bhi ko gayi hai kya- mein bulla kuy sharmoui gi-" she whispered back.
The people in the hospital tried not to stare but they couldn't help themselves. The couple looked adorable and they were whispering so cutely. It was loud because the talking in the halls hadn't stop but still people looked on. Some were actually shocked as they had seen and heard about Asad on the news. He had always seemed so strict, scary and of course intriguing. But they couldn't believe that the Asad Ahmad Khan was in the hospital carrying someone, most likely his wife away- so romantic and odd they thought.
The nurse then suddenly came up in front of them; she was slightly out of breath. Asad and Zoya realized that she was in front of them and stopped. "Woh, maaf kijye ga lekin mein aapse discharge papers sign karvana bhul gayi. Mr. Khan please Mrs. Khan ke papers sign kar dij yeh" the nurse asked. Asad and Zoya looked at each other. Hearing them being addressed as husband and wife made them both still blush a little. Asad saw an empty chair and carefully placed Zoya down. He signaled her to sit quietly, she obeyed. Asad then took the papers and signed. "Lijye" he said firmly. The nurse thanked him and left. Asad then turned back around and lifts Zoya. Zoya smiles a little and whispers "ghar chale?" Asad nodded, she considered his home hers- he smiled his rare-smile again- not so rare anymore Zoya thought as she saw that. Asad and Zoya made their way to the hospital's exit. Just as they were about to leave, Asad and Zoya both froze as they heard: "Asad…..Bhaijaan……!??!!??"
Shireen and Nikhat returned home. As they walked in they were both in thoughts about Zoya and Asad- what relation could exist between them. Nikhat was happy that her bhaijaan seemed to care so much about someone besides his family. Shireen was thinking about Rashid, how he must be anxious to know about what had happened. As the two ladies walked in, they saw that everyone was sitting at the dining table. "Are, sab aaj itni jhaldi khana ke liye kuy bet gayai" Shireen asked. Shireen smiled a little; she and Nikhat joined the family for a quick dinner. "Ammi, athe same kya hum sab aaj ice cream ke liye rukh sakhte hai kya?" asked Humiera. Ayaan walks in just then and answers Humiera's question. "Of course- vese bhi aaj agar sub itna jhaldi khana ka rahe hai to phir bhar ki ice cream to kana banta hai" he gives a small wink noticeable to only the girls. The girls giggle in delights and Rashid feels some ease, his family was getting back to normal. The slightest bit of joy gave Rashid some peace as he could visit Asad and his dost with more confidence.
