Chapter Ten – The Preparations
While I ate the food in front of me, I wondered why RK could've possibly called for Adi in such a manner. As I ate my food, there was a knock at my door. I looked up to see RK standing there with the same irritated look on his face. I was surprised he had knocked; it was the first time he had done so.
"Once you're done eating, you need to go help Aditya downstairs. And you can change out of the dirty maid's clothes."
Once he mentioned that I would be helping Aditya, I couldn't refuse. I simply nodded my head again. He turned around to leave but then stopped and looked back at me.
"About the help I provided earlier…don't get used to it."
Without another word, he turned and walked out of view. I told myself not to think about what he had just said. I blocked all thoughts of him from my mind and quickly finished my food. I slowly got out of bed and looked at my clothes. They had been spoiled by the chai. Once again, with the reminder of the chai, the pain of the slight burning returned. It wasn't as bad as earlier, but it was bothersome. It took everything I had to ignore it. Once I managed to also block out the pain, I bent to look into the bag of clothes. I pulled out the first piece of Indian clothing I could find. It was too flashy. So I placed it back in the bag. I rummaged through the bag until I saw a soft pink coloured fabric. I slowly pulled it out and held it up. It was perfect. It was an anarkali suit, just like I liked. It wasn't too fancy; rather it was quite simple besides the shiny silver lining around the bottom and the top. It was long sleeved and I couldn't wait to get into it. It felt like it had been days since I had worn Indian wear…technically it had been days. So I quickly changed into it and checked myself out in the mirror. I always felt comfortable in anarkalis. They were my favourite type of clothing. Though my anarkalis were MUCH simpler and cheaper…I still felt the same. I quickly braided my hair to one side and then ran out of my room to meet Adi downstairs. He stood in the foyer with a small group of unfamiliar faces around him.
"Got it? Now get started!"
He turned around and his eyes stopped on me. He looked me up and down and then smiled as he began to walk towards me.
"What?"
"Oh nothing, you clean up nice."
I couldn't help but smile.
"Thank you. Anyways, you needed my help?"
"Yeah for the party tomorrow."
"Oh, I forgot that was tomorrow."
"How'd you like the dress?"
"Uhm…a bit revealing don't you think?"
"Nah, you'll look great!"
"If you say so. So what can I do to help?"
"Wait, why are you so willing to help for RK's birthday party?"
"He helped me earlier. I'm just returning the favour."
"Makes sense. Well, could you call these numbers and find a good DJ for the night? It doesn't matter the cost."
"Sure."
He handed me a list of what seemed like a hundred numbers. Were there really that many DJs in the world? I felt like I knew nothing about the world outside the orphanage…and was finally learning about it. I took the list but then realized I had no phone. Just as Adi was about to turn to do some work, I called for him.
"Adi?"
"Yeah?"
"Where's a phone?"
I noticed his eyes widen slightly. I figured he felt he had made a mistake by giving me a phone job. I was about to assure him that I wouldn't do anything stupid when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around and looked up to see RK. My first instinct was to step back, which I did.
"You'd like a phone?"
"I uhm need to call D…"
"How do we know you won't pull a stupid move?"
"I'm not stupid, so why would I pull a move like that Mr. RK?"
"A smart move?"
He got me there. I wasn't going to say I wasn't smart.
"You can trust me."
"Give me one reason why we should trust you."
"I left nothing behind. I have no one to call for help."
"The police?"
"Are you giving me ideas?"
"Not exactly. I just don't trust you."
"I gave you a reason. I have nowhere to go. It's here or it's back to the orphanage where I'm not even liked."
By that point, I could feel the anger and pain in my own eyes as I stared up into his eyes. He looked down at me with an intense expression as though he were trying to find a lie behind my words. Then he smirked. He pulled out his phone and held it in front of me.
"This is only because you sound like you were miserable at the orphanage. So it wouldn't matter to me even if you were to go back."
Ouch. That's the first thing that crossed my mind after he spoke. I didn't move, as the next thought that crossed my mind was why would he want me to be so miserable? He took a hold of my hand and placed his phone in my hand. I looked down at the phone in my hand for a moment and by the time I looked back up, he was halfway up the stairs. I turned around to look at Adi who was watching silently.
"Don't mind him."
I nodded my head and decided to complete the job I had been asked to complete. It took me approximately an hour to get through all the numbers and take down notes on each DJ. Once I was sure of which DJ was best, I called him back and booked him for the next day. He mentioned that he was cancelling another booking from before to work for the Kundras. It hadn't struck me about how huge the Kundras were until he said that. I found it funny how two brothers, who were supposedly known by many people, would commit a crime and kidnap me. That thought also led the thought of why into my mind. Obviously they had a reason behind the kidnapping. That was for sure. But I had no idea what that reason was. I decided to push all my questions to the back of my mind and I walked towards Adi. I tapped on his shoulder and he turned to look at me.
"Done?"
"Yeah, I booked the DJ, he said he'll be here tomorrow at six to set up."
I handed him RK's phone.
"Wonderful! Thanks Madhy."
"Anytime. Do you need anything else?"
He looked around the room and I followed his motion to see a bunch of people decorating the place beautifully in black and red.
"Yeah I need something else."
"Yeah?"
"Yup."
"What else do you need?"
"I need you to look your very best tomorrow in that dress."
I stared at him for a moment with a serious face. Then he smiled and I let a smile cross my face in response. I gently hit his arm and shook my head.
"I'm going to rest. Still tired from earlier."
He nodded his head as he smiled and I turned to walk away. I slowly walked up the stairs and towards my room. I could've sworn I was being watched, so I quickly turned around. There was no one. I decided to ignore it and went to get some rest.
