Social Realism in ChanChan

I have to agree with everyone's comment who said today's episode was so much better. I love the fact that this show has given so much depth to the story despite the fact that it is supposedly a light-hearted show. Hannah Mina, a postcolonial writer said about literature, ""literature should be written for the people and should derive its legitimacy from addressing the problems of the people, and not that of the ivory tower of art for art's sake." If we change the medium and talk about television, then literature would be replaced by shows. But unfortunately it's hardly the case that an interesting show would deal with serious social issues.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But ChanChan has something different in store for us. Not only in India but in most South Asian countries dowry is a central social issue. I think in Indian it is particularly rampant. I loved how they showed the seriousness of the issue in such a subtle manner embedded in the main theme of the show. I personally felt it was truly praiseworthy. Purvi's love for her father truly touched me. I saw myself in her. The way she begged ChanChan to allow her have that one last hug intensified the upcoming scene. So we are now convinced that Purvi's father can do anything for her daughter out of sheer love. This brings a tear of joy. But wait... Mr. Tushaar is going to do something we all think is so wrong. However, it is not as simple as black and white. He's doing it for the same love and care that we just cherished. Now this brings a tear of sorrow. Then comes the rebellious spirit of ChanChan. It would have been so idealistic had we not been told about ChanChan's past experience related to this issue. Given Mr. Tushaar's immense love for his daughter, I might have disliked ChanChan for ruining everything just because she wants to pass a social message. But the writers didn't let this happen because they justified the girls' oath by showing how this tradition of dowry has personally affected them.

I am glad there's so much depth in the storyline. ChanChan is not about a bubbly girl. It's a show that tells the story of a girl deeply rooted in the Indian society. Being a fan of cultural studies, I sure will enjoy this show and I'll have lots to ask you guys, lots to clarify, lots to learn, and lots to discuss.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just out of curiosity, has anyone had a close encounter with this issue of dowry?

Yes Di Dowry is a serious problem in India, though my Family on the whole has never experienced a problem , I can read in Papers daily atleast 2 deaths due to the asking of excessive Dowry 😔 Sad but this is True. But Nowadays i do see Strong Women who does not fall for this Dowry thing and they are even bold enough to cancel such Wedding rather than going to a Money Minded Family. But Still this is one of the thing which has to be eradicated in India, Marriage should be done with Love not by selling Daughters and sons. But some peoples still do this as Costume so cant tell them wrong too. Anyway i will be happy if India and other countries too become a place where there will be no dowry Marriages

And i am happy they are showing the bad things of asking Dowry in Chanchan, Hope peoples will understand this. And i am expecting a lots of Social messages form chanchan, Hope it captures the hearts of millions and changes peoples too

I liked this bit.Almost all shows are against such social evils..to the extent that people are now used to hearing heroic dramatic aggressive speeches by the leads infront of a huge social gathering.completely surreal.Ive seen people with such guts on TV..Unfortunately not in real. These have become dinnertime entertainment lots, very much the way crime shows have become bedtime stories,no violence allowed.
Chanchan deals with certain issues in realistic way, which people could relate to and can replicate

Oh so it is a rampant issue in India even today. What I don't understand is why don't these girls divorce their husband rather than taking their own lives? Wait.. are they killed by their in-laws or they commit suicide?

1) Girls are still considered a burden in Indian society.
2) Girls are instilled such funny societal norms in their mind that they should listen blindly to their good for nothing in - laws & coward husbands when it comes to dowry.
3) Educated people do dowry, my own relatives did not mind doing it - when I heard I was like why the heck did they study just for that god damned certificate ?
4) People think its only in the rural parts that is not true urban is not less at all - its like upper class prostitute.

I completely agree with what Johny posted its an every day news & these women think the sasural is god I am like what the.

I am personally enjoying Chhan Chhan. Its much better according to me then the previous show. In a show in the craze for chemistry behind the leads such concepts are left out.

That's really sad Harshu. And I loved you your referred to it as "upper-class prostitution"

I certainly agree that as a female, ChanChan is a much more well developed character than Khushi. I just mentioned in another post that ChanChan would have reacted very differently if she were slapped by her mother and taunted by everyone else for secretly marrying Arnav...

This might be personal Harshu so you are free to refuse replying.. But if you don't mind me asking.. would you refuse to marry a guy whom you thought was perfect if he asked for dowry? I mean everything else is perfect but the only thing is that his family asks for dowry...

Nice Post Oyster...penned a similar one...on social messages throughout the whole two episodes.

Apart from dowry which is a very sensitive one, the issue of taking up professions is highlighted through CC's family.

A dog trainer, a wild-life photographer, a tattoo artist!

These are not conventional professions yet their parents and Grandmom though grumbling accepted it whole heartedly,

I have put up a post on this - CHHANCHHAN USP - As real as it can get!

Thanks
