It pains me to have to say this, but the episode lays bare the most tangible reason behind the flight of the loyalists.
Your post says it all...however much people may like to deny it, the mess up over the baby track was the singular reason why a majority of the loyalists left...not because they necessarily wanted to see a baby...but because the makers stood exposed...as a lot who had no clue how to handle a situation...more importantly, they stood exposed on where their loyalties lay...and that was certainly not with the core audience...all this audience expected was to be told a story grippingly and convincingly...this did not happen...and, losing all faith, they, including yours truly, left...I made the mistake of coming back in the hope that there would at least be a good finish...only to have the old adage proven yet again - the leopard does not change his spots!
