THE HEART KNOWS
CHAPTER 49 (A)
Nani saw Siddharth and Anjali in the living room and went to speak with them. She was oblivious to what had happened. When Siddharth saw her, his expression softened and Anjali wiped her tears before nani noticed.
"Aap log jaldi aagaye," nani said. [You guys came early.]
Siddharth said, "Haan, nani. Meeting khadam ho gayi. Isi liye." [Yes, nani. Meeting was over. That is why.]
"Why don't you and Khushi bitya have dinner here and then go?"
"Nahi, nani. Khushi ke saath kuch kaam hai." [No, nani. I have some work with Khushi.]
"Jaana zarrori hai kya?" [Is it important for you to go?]
Siddharth looked at Anjali and then at nani. "Zaroori hai, nani. [It is important, nani.] We'll come tomorrow."
Nani accepted.
Khushi and NK watched them from the kitchen. NK didn't know he had tears in his eyes until his vision blurred. He blinked them back and saw Khushi. She looked at the two with complete adoration, respect and love.
"Khushiji, aapko yeh sab patha hai kya?" he aksed her. [Khushiji, do you all this?]
She blinked her tears back and nodded.
"Nannav ko bhi patha hai?" [Nannav also knows?]
"Arnav, Jia and Aman. Until they sort this out between themselves, don't tell anybody else."
He gave her a thumbs up sign and said, "Sure, Khushiji. If di gets a happy life, who is going to say no."
When they heard that Siddharth wanted to leave, Khushi said, "I have to go, Nanheji. Looks like they need some time alone to gather their thoughts."
"Kal milenge, Khushiji." [We'll meet tomorrow, Khushiji.]
"Aap mujhe sirf Khushi bhulaayiye na. Khushiji ajeeb lagtha hai." [Please call me Khushi. Khushiji is strange.]
"What will Nannav say?" he asked in shock.
"Nannav ko mein dheklungi." [I'll see to Nannav.]
He thought for some time and finally said, "Okay. Ek condition pe.[On a condition.] "
"Kya?" [What?]
"Aap bhi mujhe NK bhulayiye." [You call me NK.]
"Zaroor, Nanhe….. I mean, NK. Ab mujhe jaana hoga. Bye." [Absolutely, Nanhe…. I mean, NK. Now, I have to go. Bye.]
"Kabhi alvida na kehna, Khushi." [Never say goodbye, Khushi.]
"Your hindi is improving, NK."
"Aap ki shilpa se."
She looked at him in confusion. "What….?!"
"Kripa…. Shilpa….," he explained with a smile.
She tried to strangle him. "NK….!!!!!"
He held the tip of his ear with his right hand and said, "Sorry. Sorry."
Khushi went to the living room and NK followed her.
"Chalein, Khushi?" Siddharth asked her. [Shall we go, Khushi?]
"Okay."
The drive to Siddharth's house was filled with silence. Khushi knew that Siddharth would be silent only if he was upset. Even though she could not see him worried, she did not have a choice. She decided to talk to him later.
After dinner, he settled in the living room to watch television. He flipped through all the two hundred and eighteen channels nearly thrice and then finally zeroed in on Tom and Jerry in Cartoon Network.
Khushi brought Salt and Pepper to the living room and placed their bowl of milk in front of them. She sat on the couch near Siddharth and looped her hand around his. She placed her cheek on his left biceps and watched Tom chase Jerry to his heart's content. A few seconds later, he put his arm around her.
"You saw, didn't you?" Siddharth asked after a while.
"I didn't mean to but I did."
"Maine kuch galat nahi bhola na?" [I didn't say anything wrong, did I?]
"Nahi. Kuch bhi galat nahi." [No. Nothing was wrong.]
He took a deep breath and asked, "Arnav ka phone aaya?" [Did Arnav call?]
"Not yet."
He looked at the wall clock in the living room and said, "His flight should have landed thirty minutes ago."
"Maybe he will call after checking in."
She nodded. But the same uneasy feeling was there. She tried not to think about it.
"Kya soch rahi ho?" Siddharth asked her. [What are you thinking?]
"Nothing. Having an uneasy feeling from the time I returned from the airport."
"My sweetheart can't stay away from DJ for even half a day," he teased her.
"Siddhu," she whined.
"Kya 'Siddhu'? I am telling you the truth."
"After that fashion show, when you left me and went to Delhi, it felt as if a piece of my heart was moving apart. Par, this time, it is more like something is not right."
He hugged her closer and said, "Nothing will be wrong. Even if it is wrong, I'll make it alright."
"I know," she said without a second's thought.
They watched the cartoon for sometime with their thoughts far away from them. The clock chimed twelve and that was when they realized that it was midnight.
They moved away from each other and stretched themselves.
"Bahut raat ho chuki hai," he told her. "Go and sleep." [It is very late. Go and sleep.]
Her eyes fell on her phone and he noticed it.
"Maybe he was tired. He will call you tomorrow."
She hugged him and he put his arms around her.
"Sleep well, sweetheart."
"You too, Siddhu."
They walked to their respective rooms.
Before he went to his room, she called him. "Siddhu!"
He turned.
"Di will say yes."
He stepped closer to her and kissed her forehead. "Good night, sweetheart."
They changed and got into bed. Sleep was the last thing in both their minds.
Khushi was worried about Arnav not calling her. Still the first thing in her thoughts was Siddharth and his worried face. It was the same with Siddharth. Even though he was disturbed with what Anjali would say, the foremost thing in his mind was Arnav. He wondered why he hadn't called Khushi.
Finally, the day took its toll on them and their eyes closed without their knowledge. It was around three in the morning when they fell asleep.
When Khushi woke up at seven in the morning, she checked her mobile to see if Arnav had called. There were no missed calls.
"Why haven't you called me?" she asked nobody in particular.
She had a quick bath and went to the kitchen. Siddharth was already up. He was pouring milk in a bowl full of corn flakes.
He heard her foot steps and looked up to see her. Her face told him what he wanted to know. Arnav hadn't called her.
His face told her that he was worried over what Anjali would tell him as day's passed by.
The best thing about them was they did not need to pretend that everything was fine. Even if they did, they would sense the inner turmoil. So, they were true to each other.
"Breakfast?" he asked her.
She nodded.
After breakfast, they went to office together. Anjali was not there and they hadn't expected her either. They pretty well knew that she needed time alone. When it came to work, both of them gave their hundred percent effort. They did not let their personal issues spoil their work.
By the end of the day, things hadn't changed for better or for worse.
Khushi decided to call Aman and ask him about Arnav's whereabouts. She called him but he didn't attend her call.
"What's wrong with everybody?" she muttered.
Aman noticed the missed call in his phone and called Khushi.
"Hi Aman!"
"Hi Khushi!"
She dived straight into the topic.
"Did Arnav call? Do you know where he is?"
"He called, Khushi."
"He did?" she asked in a voice which was coated with both happiness and sadness. She was happy that he had called and at the same time, she was sad that he hadn't called her even after his repeated assurances that he would speak with her.
"Yeh, Khushi. He did."
"Is he okay?"
"The deal is taking some extra time, Khushi. Looks like the people are a bit difficult."
"Do you have his number?"
He hesitated for a micro second before he said, "He called from a public booth, Khushi. We can't call him back."
"If he calls you, can you tell him that I need to talk with him?"
"Of course, Khushi. I'll tell him."
"Thanks."
"No need to thank me. You take care."
He pressed the disconnect button and stared at the phone for a while.
"Damn, I hate lying," he muttered under his breath.
"Then why are you lying in the first place?" Shilpha, Arnav's secretary, asked him.
"Do you know where our boss is?" he asked her. "Cause I don't know."
"So?"
"So, he hasn't called his wife and she is worried. I lied to her that he called me just to make sure that she isn't worried too much."
"Why don't you call the London office and ask where he is?" Shilpha suggested.
"London office?" he asked. "Why should I call our London office when I know that he didn't go to London in the first place?"
"What?" Shilpha asked in shock. "He didn't go to London. Then where is he?"
"He wanted everybody to know that he went there. I don't know what his real destination was."
"Let's cross our fingers and hope he calls soon."
He nodded.
