Five actresses who've changed the norms in Bollywood

Karisma Kapoor- Kudos to this Kapoor girl. Karisma's journey in Bollywood was a far cry from the fairy tale experiences that other star kids had. With a lineage as fine as hers, the Kapoor siblings were forbidden from working in the film industry. But Lolo fought all odds and made her debut at the tender age of seventeen and eventually established her self as one of the top actresses of the 90's. Lolo's success and struggle paved the way for her younger sibling Kareena Kapoor into Bollywood. Karisma was one of the few actresses who made fitness a fashion and fought the flab which was a highlight of the 90's actresses. With Raja Hindustani, she had her biggest commercial success and went on to play a supporting role in Dil Toh Pagal Hain opposite Madhuri Dixit, a role that many reportedly turned down including Twinkle Khanna, Aishwarya and Kajol. This won her the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. Karisma took a step further by venturing into television, something that was uncommon for actresses at that time. Although the series did not hit the right note with audiences, she once again made her comeback with Dangerous Ishq. As the yummy mummy of Bollywood, she continues to endorse big brands and has also turned Radio jockey. This makes her a complete woman and a true inspiration for all Bollywood aspirants.

EVEN JUHI reject the second lead in DTPH because she didnt want to play supporting ..she said in a recent interview

I agree with each one of them:
Zeenat - brought in the modern and fit look. Her contemporaries donned traditional clothes and had that slightly plump waistline.
Shabana - gave importance to parallel cinema over mainstream cinema.
Kajol - showed that talent is above fair skin, dancing abilities (not saying she is a bad dancer) and glamorous looks.
Karishma - transformed from an ugly duckling to beautiful swan and showed that entertainment is the primary factor.
And lastly, my favourite on list Vidya - showed everyone that an actor is not needed for a film to work👏

Zeenat Aman revolutionised bollywood with her bold performances. They weren't dirty pictures either. She was the true 'sex-symbol' who was revered as much as lead actors were. Atleast, people who've watched Satyam Shivam Sundaram would never deny that.

Wonderful article.
Would have to agree with Zeenat Aman, Shabana Azmi, and Vidya; don't think Karisma/Kajol changed any norms in BW.

Maybe "changed" isn't the right word for Kajol/Karishma because they didn't exactly revolutionize anything...I think the word is more "challenged" the norms for them.

Everything about Kajol was "unconventional" if you may...absolute refusal to thread her eyebrows because it's too painful (as an actor!), didn't care about grooming too much, married at the peak of her career (and she was only 24-25 when she got married...still could have had an even longer career ahead of her if she waited), personality is very moophat, and then she was not even conventionally good looking...yet she made it & was very successful.

I guess they put Karishma because she was the first woman from the Kapoor khandaan who went into films..transformed herself, and got there, paving the way for Kareena. Kareena would have a MUCH tougher time if Karishma didn't pave the way.

Anyways I guess they needed 5..& Katrina, Priyanka, Kareena haven't really done anything of the sort. Even Madhuri, Juhi didn't really challenge or change norms. Maybe Tabu or Sridevi.

Sridevi and Aishwarya need to be on this list. Maybe not for changing the norm but for making an impact.
