WAITING FOR YOU
CHAPTER 4
Arnav saw her and time came to a standstill for him. Those innocent eyes were looking at him. A few seconds later, Khushi broke that eye contact and looked at Aman.
"He is your friend?" she asked him.
"Do you know him?"
"I saw him in the toy store last night."
"Why don't you come with me?" he asked. "I'll introduce him."
She was about to follow Aman to their table when they heard her colleague's voice.
"Khushi, what are you doing here?" the other man in a white apron said. "We have to finish the orders."
"Sorry, Aman. Work."
"No problem. When will you finish?"
She shrugged her shoulders. "Half past eleven, maybe. Why?"
"Hum tumare liye bahar intezaar karenge." [We'll wait for you outside.]
"Intezaar? Ghyara baje tak? [Wait? Till eleven?] You must be out of your mind. It is just quarter past nine. You have to wait for more than two hours."
"Pehla din mein hi dhost ko akela chodna achchi baat nahi," Aman said with a genuine smile. "Especially when it comes to late night." [It is not good to leave you friend alone in the first day itself. Especially when it comes to late night.]
"Aman, I am really grateful for your concern. But believe me. I have done this a lot of times before."
"Main aur Arnav tumare saath aaj ke pehla nahi the. Ab hum tumare liye hain. Hum tumein raath ko akele keise jaane denge?" [Arnav and I weren't with you before today. Now, we are there for you. How can we let you go alone at night?]
Khushi sensed his affection in his voice. Not much people spoke with her like that. In fact, there were only three people who cared about her.
Aman touched her shoulders and brought her back from her thoughts.
"Kahaan ko gayi ho?" he asked her. [Where are you lost?]
She shook her head.
"We'll be waiting."
She held his hand in between both of hers and said, "Thanks."
The man in the white apron called her again.
"Go finish your work."
She nodded and went into the kitchen.
When Aman returned to his table, his eyes met with an angry glare.
"What were you doing out there?" Arnav asked him.
"Made a new friend."
"Friend? Dhost ke saath koyi yeisa flirt kartha hai kya?" [Friends? Does anyone flirt with a friend like this?]
He feigned a hurt look and said, "I went and spoke with her for your sake. You like her, right? That is why I went. And now, you are scolding me." He signalled for the check and said, "I am not going to talk with you. You are so mean."
Arnav rolled his eyes at his friend's childishness.
"Achcha mera dhost, maaf karna mujhe." [Okay, my friend, forgive me.]
The waiter brought their check and Aman took out his wallet.
"I'll pay," Arnav said.
"Arnav, relax. I need someone to spend my money on. I have your family and Shreya. Don't snatch that pleasure from me, man."
Arnav smiled and let him pay.
When they walked out of the restaurant and were in the reception area, Aman asked, "What do we do till eleven thirty?"
He looked around and said, "We can wait here. If we decide to go out and then return, it will be pretty late due to the traffic."
Aman accepted.
They took a magazine from the receptionist and occupied the sofa. Arnav couldn't concentrate on the magazine. He absent mindedly turned the pages while his thoughts were around Khushi. He was excited that he would finally speak with her.
Aman noticed it and called him. "Arnav...!"
He didn't turn.
Aman sighed and closed the magazine on his lap. He shook his friend's shoulders.
Arnav turned. "What?"
"I was calling you for a long time."
He showed the open magazine and said, "Interesting article."
Aman hid a groan and said, "Right, I know."
"Why did you call me?"
"You are excited, aren't you?"
He smiled.
"Arnav, ek choti si request." [Arnav, a small request.]
"What?"
"Don't grind her for too much information today."
"No worries, Aman. I am going to take this slow." After a second, he asked, "Why did you say that?"
Aman thought about the way she squeezed his hand. "I don't know. When I told her that I wouldn't let my friend walk alone at night, there was something in her eyes. A flicker of pain or maybe I am reading it all wrong. But still, consider it as an intuition."
Arnav nodded slowly and said, "We'll deal whatever it is together."
"Great."
Arnav and Aman were asleep by the time Khushi walked out of the restaurant. They were bored and they didn't have anything to do. Sitting on a couch doing nothing after a hectic day in the hospital was a tough job and they fell asleep.
Khushi shook Aman's shoulders and said, "Aman, wake up."
He didn't respond.
After a long fight within herself, she touched Arnav's shoulders and gently shook him.
"Arnav," she called him.
He opened his eyes and looked at her. It was the best vision he had ever seen. She slowly removed her hand from his shoulder adjusted her bag. He realized that she was uncomfortable. He stretched and massaged his stiff neck. The couch wasn't a nice place to sleep.
"You okay?" she asked him.
"Yeah. I am fine."
He shook his friend and said, "Aman, get up."
Aman looked at both his friends and got up from the couch. He glanced at his watch. It was quarter to twelve.
"You guys could have gone home," she told them.
"And leave you alone? No way," Aman replied.
"Main choti bachchi nahi hoon." [I am not a small kid.]
"Mere liye tho tum choti hi hai." [You are a small kid for me.]
They walked to Arnav's car as Aman introduced Arnav to Khushi.
"Khushi, yeh Arnav hai. Mera bahut achcha dhost. Aur Arnav, yeh Khushi." [Khushi, this is Arnav. My best friend. And Arnav, this is Khushi.]
Khushi smiled.
"Can I drop you home?" Arnav asked her.
"My apartment is nearby. I'll walk."
Arnav was shocked. "Walk? At this time? Nahi nahi. No walking. I'll drop you."
"No, it's alright. I ca..."
Aman interrupted her. "You know what? I have a suggestion. We all walk to your apartment."
She tried to protest but it fell on deaf ears. They would never let her go alone at night and in Delhi. It wasn't safe and they didn't want her to take such a risk.
She finally accepted.
On their way to her apartment, Aman asked, "Where is your apartment?"
She bit her lip, thought for a second and then gave him the address. Her action didn't go unnoticed by them.
"Do you always go alone?" Arnav asked her.
"No. My friend works here. We go home together. Most of the times, Prem bhaiya comes with us."
"Your own brother?" Aman asked.
"More than my own brother."
Before they were able to question her further, her phone rang. It was Jyothi.
"Hey Jo!"
Arnav and Aman heard only one side of the conversation and didn't know what to think about the name 'Jo'.
"Work over?"
"Finally. Long day, Jo."
"Where are you now?"
"On my way home with two new friends."
"New friends? Who are they and what are they doing? How can you trust them?"
Khushi heard Prem take the phone from her friend.
He asked, "What is it, Khush?"
"I got two new friends, bhaiya."
"Who are they, Khush?"
"Aman and Arnav. Bahut achche hain." [They are very nice.]
The two men raised their collars and grinned. Khushi smiled.
"What are they doing?"
"What do you two do?" she asked them.
"We are doctors," Aman told her.
"Doctors?" Khushi asked in surprise.
They nodded.
Arnav placed his hand over his chest and said, "I am a paediatrician and Aman is a cardiologist."
The respect in her eyes did not go unnoticed by them.
"Impressive. Bhaiya, you heard them, right?"
"Pass them the phone," Prem told her.
She gave the phone to Aman.
"Hello Prem! I am Aman."
"Take care of Khush. If I find either of you hurting her, you will have to face me and the result wouldn't be nice."
"Prem, don't worry. We won't hurt her."
"Make sure you don't. Give her the phone."
Khushi took the phone from Aman and said, "Main aap se kal baat karungi, bhaiya."
"Take care, Khush."
"You too."
After she disconnected the call, Aman said, "Is he a Hitler type of brother?"
She frowned and said, "No talking about my brother like that."
He raised his hands in acceptance and said, "Fine. Fine. No talking like that. What..."
His phone interrupted him from asking something. The call was from Shreya and he stepped aside to speak with her.
"His girlfriend," Arnav explained to her.
"What is her name?"
"Shreya. She is also a doctor. A gynaec. She hasn't accepted that she loves him."
The road was deserted. It was almost twelve and there was no traffic. The dark and lonely road reminded Arnav about his nightmare. He tried to push it away but couldn't do it. Without his own knowledge, he caught Khushi's hand.
She looked at him in shock and surprise but he didn't notice her.
When he held her hand, he felt an unknown emotion surge through him and it chased away the nightmare. A few seconds later, he realized that he was holding her hand and he moved his hand away.
"Sorry, Khushi."
She had seen the look on his face. It was different from what she had seen before. He had looked like a kid who was frightened. She wanted to assure him that everything was fine. She shook away her own fears and caught his hand.
"Don't be," she told him.
He looked at their hands and said, "Thank you."
Aman finished with his call and joined the other two. He looked at their hands and understood that he had missed something.
"Khushi, give me your phone number," Aman said.
"Do you want to know everything during our first meet itself?"
"We are already know where you live. Is knowing your phone number a big issue?"
She thought for a while and gave them her number.
They reached her apartment and waited outside till she opened the door and stepped inside.
"Want to come in?" she asked them.
Aman shook his head.
"Some other day, Khushi," Arnav replied. "It's already late. It wouldn't be nice."
"Thank you so much for coming with me."
"What else are friends for?" Aman asked her.
"Whenever you have to go home late, call us," Arnav told her.
She nodded. "Good night."
"Good night."
"Sleep well," Arnav told her. "Lock your door. We'll leave."
She locked the door and fell on her bed without changing her clothes. She was so tired that she was asleep within a few seconds. Her last thought before she went to sleep was Arnav's frightened look.
