Chapter 2

Abhimanyu Singh was in a dilemma, standing in his porch staring hardly at his innocent car. Should he go or not? He wanted to run back into his room and lock all the doors, not wanting anyone to find him ever.

'Suck it up AB! You're a grown man now...' he heard her sweet voice reprimanding him like always and turned around only to see the frangipanis dancing in the soft breeze, reminding him entirely of another person his memories resolutely overlooked.

Now he had to go. He just HAD to go!

He had many things to set right, since the last time he had seen them all, especially those two girls, the only girls he had ever allowed himself to be close with in his high school. One of whom he had broken his promise with thus ending up breaking her heart and the other, the love of his life.

Could life get anymore complicated? In his determination to get what he wanted, he had achieved great heights but lost everything else to the irretrievable shallow depths. Everything else that could have made his life worth living than the barren land it was now. And he had none to blame more than himself.

He started to climb down the stairs when his eyes fell upon the picture hanging across the wall. She was the only friend he had when he thought he had lost everything. But as life would have it, his fate played here too and he had lost her just like his parents and Daadi.

He grimaced thinking about his cruel fate. Was he doing right by going back to mend the broken relationships? Won't he be putting them in danger if they chose to forgive and accept him?

'You make your own destiny AB. Don't point fate as the prime player. Go ahead and conquer it. Rule your own fate. Prove it wrong AB!'

There! There was her voice again proving him and all his beliefs wrong. He smiled. His genuine, heart-warming smile that could make all the girls go weak in their knees. You won't leave me alone even from the other side, will you? He gently shook his head and climbed into his car.

He ordered his driver to drive straight to Highland Metropolitan Hospital, Dehradun, as he didn't trust himself to reach there without having second thoughts.

As the car zigzagged swiftly through the hilly terrain, she looked out of the window at the lazy drizzles splattering across the vast expanse of green hills that seemed to roll out endlessly, something she had never noticed before during all the years spent there, neither did she have the patience to do so whenever Ivy indulged her. She had always flicked her away and her musings, only to regret now. She missed her best friend terribly!

She felt profound guilt for all her selfishness. She had lost everything she could have had in her life just because of her petty mind. Pitiful! Because of her, everything she treasured and everyone she loved fell apart. And when she realized her mistakes, it was already too late to rectify. She would always hold herself responsible for it, even if they had the huge heart to forgive her, she would never be able to. She just wanted to fix all the loose ends for a hopeful future. It was never too late for that. Not yet! She closed her eyes to prevent the tears from spilling over.

A sixteen year old Shanaya was doubled up on her bed sobbing quietly.

"SHY!!! My fashion geek ... Are you in there???" she heard Ivy mumbling outside her room. She quickly wiped away her tears bolting to the door, opening it and engulfing her in a fierce hug. Isha slowly closed the door with her foot and waited for Shanaya to let her go.

"Shy... what's wrong?" Isha muffled out.

"Nothing!" Shanaya replied quickly, albeit too quickly as she turned away and finally added, "I missed you!"

"You saw me only last night, before I dropped you home. And we have been together this entire week in school!" Isha crossed her arms across her chest.

"Its nothing... Really Ivy..." Shanaya muttered.

Isha stood there, taking in her swollen eyes and red nose.

"Really Shy...Nothing... Spit it out this instant!" she spat out as Shanaya turned away from her and faced the wall. Losing her patience, Ishanvi knew what would make her best friend spill the beans and decided to act upon it.

"That's it! If you're not gonna open your pretty little mouth, I AM LEEEAAVINGGG!" she slowly turned towards the door and dramatically twisted the handle.

"I hate being in this house..." Shanaya muttered.

"Umm...this house is your home Shanaya!" Isha knew about Shanaya's compatibility with her so called family and her longing for genuine affection.

"NO! I would hate to call this... this place as my home Ivy! It's just..." Shanaya trailed off burying her head in the pillow to stall the oncoming tears as Isha watched her with a thoughtful expression.

"You know what...you should come and stay at my place for this vacation Shy... With just Arnie and Khushi Bhabi around, it gets too lonely at tim--" Isha was cut mid-speech as Shanaya once again threw her arms around her with a contented laugh.

Ishanvi was always besides her, no matter how bad the situation was, Shanaya could always trust her to patch everything up. At times she teased her too, "Wave your wand Ivy! Fix this!"

She remembered the memory wistfully. But this time, Shanaya Singhania would fix everything right.

Yes! She needed her best friend back and she would do anything for it. Love and the rest could take a back seat till then!

"I had to bring him along Arnie. How can I leave him alone with the care takers when he was not well?" Isha talked into her phone holding Rishi in her other hand as Aditya helped the driver load the baggage in the car.

"Yeah, now he's fine... No, no temperature for the past three days!" Isha leaned her head away from Rishi as he tried to grab the phone but ended up pulling her hair.

"Ouch! Your son is worse than you Arnav. Why didn't he retain even a minuscule of Bhabi's nature is still the million dollar question!" she glared at Rishi to make him stop his antics.

"Ma..." he grinned at her holding up his hands for the phone.

"No! It's your Papa... not Ma... say Papa and I'll give you the phone" Isha stuck her tongue out at him.

Arnav on the other side sat with his head in his hands. He couldn't be sure who the baby was, the one on the phone or the one in her arms. He chuckled as he heard a loud "MAMA!" from the other end, courtesy his son!

"Phew! Why does your son have to call everyone as Mama Arnie? He embarrasses me everywhere!" Isha pouted.

"He's just an eight month old baby Chotti!" Arnav stopped himself before laughing out loud knowing her reaction.

"Don't you dare call me that?" Well there was the outburst he expected.

"Fine Devil's spawn, I won't call you Chotti! Now listen, are you sure you should go to Dehradun... I mean..." Arnav trailed off.

"Oh c'mon Arnie! You know I am well over the past..." Isha muttered in frustration as she settled in the car. She didn't protest when Adi took Rishi from her hold.

After a long pause on both the ends ,"Seriously Arnav... I don't care about it anymore", she tried once again.

"If you say so..." Arnav sighed.

"Ok, I'll talk to you once we reach the hospital Arnie. Now let me catch the sleep that had deluded me since you left this little bundle in my care!" she really needed to clear her mind before the past was thrust on her, unprepared.

"Bye Isha. Take care!" she heard him softly whisper before the line went dead.

She looked to her side and her lips curved into a tiny smile as she saw a well snuggled Rishi, sleeping deeply in Adi's arms. She leaned against the window, her eyes following the eddies created by the wind blowing against the rain splashing on the glass as her mind swirled far away, remembering the moments she had always wanted to forget.

Isha delicately tip toed into her dark room not wanting to wake up Tanya and closed the door lightly behind her. She had been with Shanaya and Shruti preparing for their final exam scheduled for the next day. She became thoughtful as she saw the window wide open as she knew Tanya never left the window open. Shrugging, she staggered to her bed in the darkness only to be pulled back into the shadows as a hand clamped her mouth shut.

A bewildered Ishanvi spun around quickly, only to slam into a hard chest. She slowly looked up into the intense eyes of her captor and her heart skipped a beat as she saw them boring into hers.

Your heart skipping for Rohan... Oh please Isha! Your becoming delusional. You went giddy because of the fear and not of Rohan, her mind chided her as she struggled out of his grasp.

"What the hell Ro?" she furiously whispered to him, angered by her confusing reactions.

"You tell me Ivy... You invited Shanaya to stay at your place for the entire vacation, but forgot me nah! Such an awesome friend you are!" he whispered back as furious as her.

Isha smacked him on his forehead with her palm.

"What was that for?" Rohan rubbed off the dull pain.

"It's for being as stupid as you could be! I knew you would hang out most of the holidays at my place. So what's the use in inviting you Ro?" Isha grinned at him.

"I wanna stay at your place as I am your friend too. Isn't it fair enough?" he pouted cutely.

"Nope buddy! It's not a good enough reason!" Isha yawned at him and turned towards her bed.

"Fine! I like Shanaya and wanna spend more time with her and this is the best way I can see to do it!" Rohan flailed his hands around to prove his point.

"What? You like Shanaya!" Isha turned around ignoring the subtle drop in the pit of her stomach.

"Uh huh, that's what I told you right now, didn't I?" Rohan scratched his head sheepishly.

"Oh My God! WOW!" Isha leapt up and down on her feet.

"Wait! You're happy with this..." asked a shocked Rohan.

"Ofcouse I am! My best friend Rohan loves my other best friend Shanaya. So that makes me a happy friend, right!" Isha was better at disguising her true emotions than she gave herself credit for.

"Hey! I just told you I liked her. Not love her!" Rohan became defensive.

"It may turn into love sometime nah!" she said hugging him.

"I guess!" whispered a somewhat uncertain Rohan as he buried his face in her hair and held her close.

What they never saw was the thin sheen of moisture that gleamed in both their eyes as the silvery soft moonlight streamed in through the open window. And they also failed to notice the restless bump under Tanya's blanket as Isha almost chucked Rohan out of the window and fell on her bed, with silent tears streaming down her face.

She was wrong. Her heart had indeed skipped a beat for Rohan!

Isha was pulled out of her memory lane by the loud "Ma!" from her nephew who pointed both his fists at her opening and closing them repeatedly.

She chuckled light-heartedly and opened his tiny back-pack. Something Rishi had got from his mother was his humongous hunger. He loved food just like her Khushi Bhabi!

That vacation was one of the best Isha could ever remember. Though she was hurt, she was content when Shanaya immediately agreed to be Rohan's girlfriend. The trio had spent the holidays lazing around in the huge summer house of the Raizada's in Mussoorie. And that's the time she learnt to cook too. Whenever they messed up something due to their rebellious nature, her Bhabi sneaked them away from her Bhai's insufferable anger. But she did punish them in her own way though. She made them cook something or the other, which she gobbled up all by herself.

"But Bhabi... I didn't even taste the cake... and I made it!" Isha stomped her foot.

"Arrey Chotti! It was good. Very good, to be true! Next time you make it, make more so that all of us can have it ok... It was just the size of a cup cake!" Khushi patted her cheek trying to control her laughter.

"Bhabi..." Isha almost wailed rolling on the floor.

"Ok ok baba! I'll make you three my special Choco-sundae tomorrow. Quit whining!" Khushi gestured her to calm down.

"Do you promise?" Isha looked up at her in a glare that reminded Khushi so much of Arnav.

"Have I ever backed down from my word Isha?" she challenged back equally. The only way to deal with Isha was the way she dealt with Arnav. Never back down! As the brother-sister duo had strikingly similar characters. But Isha never got angry while Arnav had a doubled up temper to equate the loss.

Isha smiled at her as Rohan and Shanaya hi-fived.

"Ok my three musketeers! It's bed time now. Save all your energies for tomorrow's mutiny against Arnav. Now shoo shoo!" Khushi fanned her hands at them.

"Can we sleep in the gazebo on the terrace?" Rohan asked her.

"Sleep wherever you please, My highnesses! Just don't bother me till sundae time tomorrow!" she jokingly told them as Rohan and Shanaya rushed off to get the blankets.

"When is Di coming here Bhabi?" asked a small voice.

Khushi was surprised to see Isha still standing there as she had thought that the three had ran away together.

"In a couple of weeks Chotti! Their business in U.S. has not been done with yet. Isha... Are you ok?" Khushi asked her carefully looking at the girl who seemed in low spirit than usual.

"I just miss her..." Isha trailed off.

"You know you can talk to me too if something's bothering you right! I am like your Di too nah..." Khushi looked at her with a hopeful smile.

"Really Bhabi... I always thought you were the mother hen!" Isha said with a straight face but ran away laughing as Khushi lunged at her.

"Run all you can Isha. Tomorrow, you have to run back to me for saving your ass from your fire-breathing brother and I promise you I won't help!" Khushi yelled at her.

Isha peeped back into the kitchen, "Nah! I know you'll save us no matter what cause you're sooo like mama... she'll threaten us too but always stick with us against papa!" Isha told her with a genuine smile and ran off leaving behind a happily glowing Khushi.

Isha went up to the dark terrace and found Rohan and Shanaya sleeping on the day-bed beneath the gazebo. She felt like she was intruding and stepped away to return back to her room.

She felt a hand grab hers and was yanked back onto the bed as her traitorous heart skipped another beat.

"Where do you think you're going? You were not going back to your room right?" Rohan asked her comically.

Isha knew he won't let her go away and thus lied to him.

"I was just going back to get my blankets Ro!" she huffed pushing against his chest to stand up but Rohan didn't allow her to.

"We can share! Mine is large enough!" he pulled her completely on the bed shifting himself slightly as Shanaya slept without any care on his other side.

"But Ro..."

"Shhh! Just shut up and sleep buddhu. You talk too much!" he closed his eyes feigning sleep.

"And you demand too much brat!" replied Isha settling herself against him as there was not much space on the day-bed. She too closed her eyes when his chuckle reverberated across her body. But sleep was far away from both their minds.

Just like now. Isha couldn't sleep no matter how much she tried. Whenever she closed her eyes, her mind went back to the memories playing them like an endless dream to her. She breathed in the baby smell of her nephew as he slept curled in her arms and leaned against Aditya who immediately put his arm around her. Couldn't life be as simple as this? Why did her treacherous heart never felt the same way about Adi? She sighed and closed her eyes. Her Sleep was in Neverland, indeed!
