HER CHAMPION

She flitted in between the groups of people, trying not to bump into anyone ,and made a beeline for the darkest corner she could find in this large crowded glitzy room. Having completed her mission successfully she leaned back against the wall and sighed.

She was miserable

When the Shekhars had invited the Singhs to Udaipur to celebrate Diwali with them , everyone had been delighted. As Dadisa had put it , it was a sign that the bond between the two families was being strengthened. Ganga too had been thrilled and excited to visit the new city

She had no idea then that it was going to be like this

The Shekhars had thrown a huge Diwali party in honor of the Singhs. Unfortunately their idea of a good time had been the complete opposite of Gangas. What she had thought would happen was a small intimate dinner with close friends and family and a blissful hour of bursting crackers outside

What had happened had been a huge buffet with a bewildering array of dishes, most of which tasted foreign and unpleasant, followed by 200 people trooping into a large room ( Masa had whispered that it was called a ballroom) and congregating into large groups. Ganga had felt terrified, painfully shy and bewildered

In the beginning it hadn't been so bad. She had clung to Anandiji who had been slightly less uncomfortable than her and since Collector Sahab had dogged their footsteps , they had been fine. She had even mustered up the courage to talk to a few ladies present. The older ones

But then Dadisa had said that she wanted to retire which had resulted in the whole family going upstairs into the living quarters firmly leaving Anandi and her behind

" Enjoy a little Balo" Masa had said fondly to her

"You go out so little. I'll take care of Mannu today for you" Taisa had added in firmly

So here she was stuck in a corner and praying no one would find her here. Anandiji and Collector saab had disappeared a while ago ,placing her in a furious Sanchi's care who had dumped her the minute Shiv ji had been out of sight

She didn't blame them. The crowd had become progressively rowdier, once the older generation had retired for bed. Soon after Collector Sahab's exit someone had brought out alcohol and Sanchi as the hostess had merely laughed and cheered with the others. Music blared out from the speakers, a loud noisy type of music. Collector Saab had explained to her that it was called ROCK. Ganga thought the name apt

Ganga's lips tightened at the scene in front of her. This was bad. But knowing Sanchi the whole hall would be tidied up before tomorrow and no one would be any wiser. Even if they did know, Ganga had a feeling it wouldn't matter. The world she knew and this world was very different and she would continuously have to keep reminding herself of it . Since his reminders clearly weren't enough

Involuntarily her eyes once again shifted to the door hoping to see him stride in . Then she mentally cudgeled herself. She did not need his help. In fact she didn't even want to see his face. She was furious with him.

He hadn't expressed the slightest pleasure in coming to Udaipur. Unlike the rest of the family, he hadn't complimented her once when she had worn the churidhars Anandiji had gifted her. He hadn't talked to any of the young college boys ( Sanchi's friends)staying at the house and instead ignored them with blatant rudeness. And when she had finally dared to dress up in a long English dress-gown, Anandiji had told her when she had given it- all he had done was give his jacket to her saying it was cold. She went back to her room , flung the jacket in the corner and cried her heart out

Most unkind of all had been the incident today morning. He had come into her room when she had been picking out a sari

" Are you really going to attend today's party?" he had asked , an indefinable tone to his voice

She had looked up in surprise "Obviously. We all are aren't we?"

He had hesitated before replying

"Ganga, I know I've told you this countless times before. But you have to understand, this world is very different from the world you know. You ..."

She had cut him off angrily then

"I What? " she had demanded furiously

" Because I come from a poor illiterate background and have started learning at the age of 19 I am not worthy to talk to these people? Or is it that you are ashamed to be seen with me?"

He had stared at her for one long moment , his eyes burning dangerously, before he whisked around and left without another word. She could only watch helplessly through the window as he left that evening for a "night ride" as he phrased it ,on his bike. His mother had echoed her fears of riding alone at night, but the amused smile he gave at that had been more than enough to convince her that he had taken plenty of these night rides before. Probably during his Mumbai years. Even more probable, he had had a companion with him then

Ganga came back to the present and groaned internally. She should have swallowed her pride and listened to him instead of making a fool of herself . Now she was trapped in a room with 50 drunk strangers and the only familiar person going out of the room with some guy

Wait. What?!

Panicking and cursing Sanchi with all her might Ganga made her way over to the doors that led onto the balcony . Surely Sanchi wasn't so stupid as to...

Unfortunately, she was

Ganga stumbled through the crowd before she reached the large French doors which led on to the small corner terrace. She cursed aloud this time. Trust Sanchi to pick such a dangerous place for a conversation with a young man. She determinedly banged the doors open startling the single couple present there

"Sanchi!" she exclaimed with false cheeriness.

"I have been looking all over for you. Your mother has asked us to come upstairs immediately"

Sanchi stared at her furiously for a second before her expression changed to cool contempt and disdain.

"That's funny because the maid just came up to me and confirmed that my parents were snoring their hearts away" she drawled out

Ganga drew herself up and willing her voice to remain steady she said

"Well then, I think it's quite time enough that the two of us go upstairs too, don't you" she gazed steadily at Sanchi praying that the silly chit wouldn't make a fuss

Apparently not

"I will go up exactly when I feel like going up Ganga. But I would definitely recommend you going up soon instead of staying behind to play chaperone in an environment you obviously don't fit in. I know exactly why you came out on to the terrace right now and I'm telling you for the first and final time to keep your nose out of my business and to stop trying to foister your stupid gawar beliefs onto me. Is that clear?" Sanchi flashed out much to the amusement of her companion, a young shifty looking young man in a purple shirt. Ganga loathed him on sight

"She's one of the village idiots in my beloved Bhabhi's extended family" Back to sarcasm

Ganga forced her anger and humiliation down. Only the thought of Mrs Shekhar's and Anandiji's face when they found out that the daughter of the house was holding assignations unchaperoned at 11 in the night made her stand there. She wished with all her heart that Collector Saab and Anandiji would reappear

"Nevertheless, I am insisting that you come up with me or I'll have to go and wake your parents up RIGHT NOW"

"Oh Shut Up!" Mr Purple Shirt burst out in a fit of anger seeing that Sanchi was temporarily bereft of speech at this

" Who the devil gave you authority to speak like this? Now scram and don't tell anyone about this or I swear it will be the worse for you"

Ganga turned on him, eyes flashing ,all reins on her anger having snapped. She hadn't dealt with the likes of Ratan Singh to be terrified by a boy her age

" When You Speak To Me , you will keep your voice down and speak" she bit out

"Now, unless you want Mr and Mrs Shekhar to kick you out for your disgraceful conduct tomorrow , you will keep your mouth shut and go to your allotted rooms with all your friends immediately. Meanwhile I'll escort Sanchi upstairs and you Will Not Interfere"

Purple Shirt stepped back for a moment, taken aback by the ferociousness of her assault. Ganga mentally cheered. Unfortunately it was cut off in the middle

The guy stepped forward this time, an ugly expression on his face . He raised his hand and clicked his fingers. She suddenly saw that 4 of his friends from the hall had joined them and were now standing behind her blocking her exit. She felt a sudden pang of fear shoot through her

"I have never had any one talk to me in that way before, least of all a village gawar" he advanced menacingly

" In fact I'm not sure I like being spoken to that way. I think you need a sharp lesson reminding you how to talk to your betters" he hissed at her

She recoiled back as the smell of stale whisky hit her. These people were drunk enough to be stupid and reckless and her situation looked very grim at present. With a shock she realized that Purple shirt had grasped her right wrist and was twisting it painfully. She screamed

" Sanjay!" Sanchi stood there petrified at the sudden turn of events.

Ganga felt a certain satisfaction even through the haze of pain that the events had knocked some sense into the idiot's head. But then a particularly painful twist came and all she could do was scream for help. Suddenly two large hands were suddenly blocking her mouth and nostrils ,suffocating her. She tried to struggle but it was hard, so so hard , the darkness was already dragging her down, she could feel a red haze over her eyes and the agonizing pain were shooting through her entire body...

Suddenly she was yanked free with a force that sent her reeling into a strong hard chest, a chest which smelled just like

Dr Sahab.

She looked up thankfully confirming with her eyes what she had already recognized with her other senses. Doctor Sahab. Her Doctor Saab. A very furious Dr Saab but nonetheless her very own Dr Saab

He grabbed her roughly, his eyes shooting fire as he ran his hands up and down checking for any injuries or bruises. She winced when he touched her wrist. The rough sweep became more gentle though his face tightened and his expression became more dangerous. Ganga almost pitied Purple Shirt

"Does that hurt?" his hand swept over the fine bones of her hand as he checked for fractures

She nodded" A little" .

He turned the palm of her hand right and left. A muffled scream escaped her. The grip on her waist tightened for a moment

He straightened up and said

"You have a very bad sprain along with the bruising and swelling. You will have to keep that hand absolutely still for the next few days , no cooking, no cleaning and absolutely no climbing trees" he ordered sternly

She smiled sheepishly at that. He was the only one who knew that she loved climbing trees. And the only one who knew she had been um...uh...borrowing mangoes from the neighbouring field . She had managed to explain it away to him but she had a sneaky feeling that he had been laughing throughout the entire speech

Back to the present

He swung her up onto a high seat , taking care to avoid her wrist and turned

"Sanchi , go back into the hall and tell the remaining idiots that the party is over and to go to bed"

Sanchi disappeared without a single word. Ganga supposed that the events of the night had sobered her. Or maybe Dr.Sahab had scared her to death. Lord knows, he looked extremely terrifying at that moment

'As for you" Dr Sahab advanced towards Purple Shirt rolling up his sleeves" I'm going to teach you a lesson you will never forget in your life"

Ganga didn't protest because

A. She was too tired too

B. It wouldn't have done any good even if she had

C. She wanted the arrogant sod to get drubbed thoroughly

By the time Purple Shirt's face had been reduced to something resembling a museum exhibit for a chimpanzee gored to death, Ganga was petrified. And a little proud. She had never seen the caveman aspect to her Dr Saab before. And frankly she didn't want to anymore

Jagya walked up to her and gently took her in his arms. Facing the other four of the (now unconscious) Purple Shirt's buddies he declared

" If I see any of you even looking at my fiance the way you have been gawking her for the past couple days, I will not hesitate to turn you into an even worse mess than this slimy git here"

Ohhh that explained the reaction to the English dress

The announcement was met with a flurry of nods. Jagya stared them down for a couple seconds more and then walked out of the terrace and up the steps with her

Ganga smiled sleepily in his arms. Her Champion. She had nothing to fear when he was there by her side
