Abhijeet Sawant trounced his rival Amit Sana from Bhilai to become the country's first Indian Idol. That's a huge achievement for a 24-year-old who comes from a middle class family.

Abhijeet Sawant is on top of the world. Who wouldn't be with a bag of goodies after becoming the Indian Idol? The unassuming 24-year-old credits his success to his uncle Sanjay Sawant, a popular stage performer who motivated him to train in music from veteran musician Bhavdeep Jaipurwale. A supportive family, however, is the most important ingredient for success.

Since his main aim was to become a recognized name, Sawant was quite content to become one of the three finalists. Of course, becoming a first-time winner of the title was the icing on the cake. His schedule now reads like any other famous performer's – days packed with performances, meetings, recordings, interviews, his duties as Sony Entertainment Television's brand ambassador… and he is enjoying it all. This is a price he is more than willing to pay.

Apart from having far less time to spend with his friends and relatives, he says that the money and fame have not changed him in any way at all. He is considering buying an apartment in the suburbs but apart from that, he will live the same way he has. Abhijeet is on the threshold of an exciting new career and is a rich man today. However, the young man is surprisingly humble and down-to-earth about hitting the jackpot. After winning the Sony Entertainment Television's show Indian Idol, Abhijeet Sawant has become a superstar in India. He has also released his first album 'Aapka Abhjeet Sawant', which has become very popular. Even the video of the song "Mohabbetein Lutaunga" is creating sensations.
Abhijeet Sawant has also started playback singing. He has already sang for two hindi movies.

December 26, 2005: Abhijeet Sawant Indian Idol!

Abhijeet Sawant is the Indian Idol.

After seven gruelling months and competing against hundreds of contestants, the Mumbai lad was crowned Indian Idol, at around 3 pm at the Famous Studio, Mahalaxmi, south Mumbai.

The result brings to an end one of the most awaited outcomes of a talent hunt in Indian television history.

Sony Entertainment Television had bagged the exclusive rights from the makers of the US serial American Idol and turned it into one of the biggest television events in India.

"It is party time for us," said one of Abhijeet's friends. "I always knew he would make it. He had the spark in him and good that he made it today."

Spare a thought for the runner-up, Amit Sana. In the end, there was very little to choose between the two talented young men. They will dominate our lives in the years to come.

October 21, 2005: Will Abhijeet be the Indian Idol?

Abhijeet Sawant is neither Amitabh Bachchan nor Shah Rukh Khan. But ask anyone in Dharavi, northcentral Mumbai, for his address and you will get it!

"This is unbelievable!" exclaims his mother Manisha. "Sometimes I feel I am dreaming that my son has become famous overnight! Since childhood, Abhijeet was our favourite during Antakshari. Now, he has become India's favourite! Girls, grandfathers, middle-aged men... they all want to meet Abhijeet and want him to win. Wherever I go, I am known as Abhijeet's mom."

The phone rings constantly. There is a regular stream of visitors and journalists to wish her the best and inquire about Abhijeet.

Abhijeet -- in case, you are one of the handful of Indians who didn't know :-) -- is one of the two finalists on Indian Idol, the Sony Entertainment Television show which has taken the nation by storm. Judgement Day was February 24, when India voted for the winner.
