I am Canadian also, and not once have I heard of anyone having a party down here...
Typically people do tend to keep their kids away if they have chickpox...
Might just be province/city specific?

I am in the UK and am aware of the chicken pox parties. The thing with chicken pox is that the majority of people only get it once. If you get it as a child you are most like to recover better from it, although it doesn't seem like it when you are itchy and covered in calamine lotion. If you get it as an adult the same virus can develop into shingles which is painful.
Therefore it is better to catch it when you are young and from the parents point of view before they start full time school.

I remember when I got chickenpox. We used to live in India back then, it started with one of my older cousin's, when my mum heard he had chickenpox she was so excited, she purposefully sent my brother (age 6) and me (age 4) to be with him which led us to get CP. She was so happy when we got it and we were like what did you do to us!? She knew that you could only catch it once so she wanted us to get it and be over with it. I love my mum.
