Why only killing a female embryo is wrong?

A lot of measures have been taken through out the last decade to prevent female feticide.
Parents who abort their female child are seen as culprits and male chauvinist.
But when these same parents want to abort their child due to career/society or other reasons they are considered as independent human beings. They can do what they want to do with their body.
Then why is killing a female embryo wrong?
Both are killing.
Then if there are no anti abortion campaigns why are there so many anti female foeticides campaigns?
Why don't all kids have the equal right to live?

@Blue: That's a different debate, whether abortion should be allowed at all or not.

@Red: You asked the question after providing the answer yourself.
The campaigns are doing exactly what you desire, i.e. they are ensuring equal right to live irrespective of the foetus' or the kid's gender.

There can be various reasons because of which a woman might opt for abortion. Let's look at some of the more common causes:
1. Unplanned pregnancy - She doesn't want a baby at that point in time, period. The reason might be career, financial, personal, etc. It doesn't matter to the woman whether the foetus is male or female, she simply doesn't want a kid in her life at that time.

2. Rape - Pretty self explanatory why she doesn't want it. Once again, the woman is not concerned about the gender of the foetus. She doesn't want the baby of someone who raped her, end of story.

3. Medical reason - Could be fetal defects or danger to mother's life. It doesn't matter whether the foetus is male or female, if the doctor thinks it's risky for the mother or the foetus has defects, it's terminated.

So, if women abort because of any of the above 3 reasons or something similar to that, the decision is not being influenced by the gender of the foetus. Both male and female foetuses have an equal chance to be aborted; consequently, in the total population of foetuses, both male and female have equal opportunity to live.

Now contrast the above 3 to the one reason which the campaign targets to stop:
4. Sex selective abortion - The woman (or her husband, or both) wants a son or a daughter only and therefore aborts any foetus that is of the undesired gender. Typically Indian society prefers male kids, so female foetuses are aborted.

One gender (female) is getting aborted, whereas the other gender (male) increases in proportion. The equal right to live goes out the window. And I hope that answers your question, why abortion because of other reasons is allowed but not sex selective abortion.

Because some feminists want to exercise their bodily rights, but when their own gender comes to play, they change their tune. 😛 [Intentional tongue-in-cheek humor]

This isn't a general topic on abortion but on selective abortion. So I will try to (and I hope others) steer clear from bringing the same-old abortion abortion arguments and non-arguments.

I will just say that, imo:

1) If abortion as a process should be an universal right given to women to go through, then it stands to reason that it's entirely her choice to abort what's in her - including a female fetus if she wills.

2) If aborting female fetuses are wrong, but abortions in ordinary cases are right, can we really say we are not being extremely sexist and one-sided when making this law?

Most pro-choice I have met actually fall silent when the topic of gender-based abortion is brought up.

If the right to have legal and safe abortions should be given to women whenever she wills, then let us not get hypocritical and abort her desire to abort a female fetus.

If female foeticide includes gender discrimination too, can we not say abortion includes fetus discrimination where we place the value of a person over the fetus. (Unless people say that is how it is scientifically, I will just that say scientifically female fetuses and male fetuses are not really all that different baring their genders, so having the right to abort when one wills and then aborting her choice to abort when our own genders come to be the victim is very hypocritical to me).

She doesn't want a baby, ok. She doesn't want a baby boy after three boys she's had. She already gave "life" to three boys. She can't go through another pregnancy after this, so can she abort and try again (that being the last time) to see if destiny allows her a male child? [Hypothetical scenario]

But I understand your point. So it's more to do with not ruining the male-female ratio. And also because gender discrimination is on the play.

But then if it's about not giving both genders equal opportunity to live...then, it's also not giving a fetus the opportunity to live or grow so yeah I find the whole hoopla about gender-based abortion (unless it becomes a nation-wide trend in which case the government can ban ultra-sonogram or raise awareness to stop this etc) pretty hypocritical. Most educated people in urban areas (where they are not coerced by the society to bring a male child ) won't be aborting fetuses based on their genders so if a few wants to go ahead and abort based on gender, I say it's a personal matter (rather than a social concern), as the numbers will be negligible. So if abortion is permitted, they should have the legal rights to abort a fetus based on gender much like any other abortion. I think a few people even in the west abort based on the gender of the child and the society is OK with it.

Blah. I was really hoping to not engage myself into these tedious discussions so I probably won't be continuing it here unless new points are brought forth or I have a new perspective to add. So sorry to anyone who was hoping for a match with me. I know I shouldn't even be writing this, but hey, now that I have, I am not not posting.

There is a lot of trouble in the world, and a lot of wrong deeds. We as people have to give priorities. We need to say what is more important, since we can't do everything at once. We need to take small steps in the right direction. Abortion, is something I am for if it's in the right situation, since you can't check on everything, and you can't block for people where the abortion is neccersary, you will have to say yes.
To your question ;Why only killing a female embryo is wrong?
WHO TOLD YOU THAT? That is so not true! I don't know where you got that, but it is wrong. Killing female embryo is just as wrong as killing male embryos.
The difference is that the killing of female embryos is happening more and is happening with the most ridicules reason; because it's a GIRL.
Abortions happen for different reasons and youu can't judge all the women at once. Some are raped, some have difficulties during the pregnancy, which leads them to abort. Yes, there are woman who abort their child for stupid reasons. Yet, I can't judge them for that, since I don't know what precisely made them do that.
I want to tell you too, that abortion isn't killing. There is a slight difference. It is hard to tell, since those things lay so close to one another.

I think Souro explained well.

Either killing all embryos is wrong or killing all embryos is Ok.

However, in countries like India, female fetuses are frequently aborted because of preference for males. That anti female feticide campaigns don't say it is OK to abort a male, but wrong to abort a female. The point is to prevent gender bias against female children. It is more of an attempt to level the field rather than turn it the other way.

So a pro-choice person who is anti-gendercide and supports these campaigns in places like India, China is a hypocrite? Is that the basic argument?

As a pro-choice, anti-"gendercide" person I can tell you that the problem we have isn't with the act of abortion, but with the act of discrimination.

Sex selective abortion (like Souro noted above) is what I have a problem with. The term applies commonly to the abortion of female fetuses. However, to me, it doesn't matter if the fetus is identified as female or male, I don't agree with it.
