Directors, like actors, once successful face the pressure to back up successful performance with another one just as big or better. Once a director makes this awesome movie, commerical or art house, they get noticed by the 'ruling' stars and face the pressure to follow up their movie with another one-- but it typically comes with a need to make it a Hit. Thats why Vishal B who was a nobody till Kaminey, Omkara is known to make these critically acclaimed movies that every actor wants do to get credibility... but they come with limitations, expecations and at the end, their work gets compromised. Ditto for the guy who made Agent Vinod, RGV. Madhur is an example of Old wine in a new bottle. Page 3, Fashion, Heroine were similar subjects.

Ofcourse there are exceptions. But really, what do you expect when you make this fabulous movie with great casting and then a wannabe film with a popular star who probably hasnt really acted since his first Botox job?😆

I just want to add, Kahaani had a super strong script. It didn't require historians from any director so it's hard to judge sujoy ghosh from Kahaani.

I think directors are just much more passionate and hungry at the beginning of their career and every detail shows up on screen.

Rajkumar santoshi, the director of cult classics like Ghayal and Andaz Apna Apna, is directing Family and APKGK today.

DG, glad to see a non Kareena thread from you, you keep up the good work too! 👍🏼

Guess-who as usual makes a very valid point. Terrifying, but valid.

But he will give Saif the biggest hit of his career...

Well, most directors who start with a "bang" tend to go downhill. It could be because their "best" is behind them and one can't really keep on churning good cinema--one after the other.

When you look at Raju Hirani, he's gotten worse with his movies, but the difference is that his "worse" is very good for others. Munna Bhai MBBS is an absolute cult classic; Lage Raho was very nice, and 3 Idiots was good, but I'm not a fan of it.

Then you look at directors who started small--such as Sujoy Ghosh. He came into life with Kahaani and his others movies (Home Delivery, Aladdin) weren't even good. JB was okay.

So, I'd like to believe that, it depends on how you start. Directors like Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar who started with ATBBs couldn't really replicate it again, whilst Sooraj Barjatya seems to be the only Director who toppled himself.

When you look at Ghai, Yash sahab, RGV, etc--you really so realize that their best works came early in their career and they have underperformed/under produced massively during the height of their filmmaking peak.

Munnabhai>Lagey Raho Munnabhai>3 Idiots

Top notch!

You're judging him by box office success. Several critics opine Munnabhai MBBS was his best film and 3I his weakest. But it's true Raju Hirani has been going well. Even if he's trashed he's trashed for having predictability.

The biggest tragedy in Bollywood is J.P. Dutta. He made those classic war films like Border back in the 90's. Then, he fell off the map with Umrao Jaan. When I look at the films today, they make Umrao Jaan look iconic. It wasn't that bad of a movie and perhaps he lost the confidence to make another movie!
