Another curious case is priyadarshan...its like he has split personality...he directs sensitive dramas tht win national awards in one language, and in the same friggin year in another language, he directs stuff like De dhana dhan and mere baap pehle aap...like HOW??????

specifically talking abt hindi, he started off with a bang and made excellent films like viraasat, gardish and hera pheri...then he sort of disintegrated into making stupid silly comedies just coz hera pheri worked...

hes a really good director when he wants to be...he "adapts" stories well...if only he didnt go crazy with "im going to remake every mallu and tamil film there ever was" thing...😆

It changes from person to person. People like Sujoy Ghosh, Anurag Basu, Shoojit Sircar are examples of people who have improved/had highs and lows with different films. But yes for most directors in contemporary times their best work has been their first film.
Its unfair though to add Yash Chopra to the list. His last few works might have not been his greatest. But he has given a LOT of classics in many genres like Deewar, Silsila, Lamhe, Darr, Chandini.

i think its fair enough to include YC...most of his fans would agree tht his best work was Lamhe post which he started to lose tht "quality", "originality" and "boldness" he had in his films...

Darr although good was heavily "inspired" by Dead Calm...
DTPH was all fluff n zero substance...
VZ had some potential but isnt in a patch on his pre Darr works...
and id rather not talk abt JTHJ...

He has a lot of goodwill which made him sail through all these years...but strictly speaking, the quality had been declining ever since the mid 90s set in...he stopped experimenting with bold themes and stuck to the same ol same ol stuff (more fluff and less of substance)...his films lost tht sense of drama they used to previously have...VZ somewhat is the closest to his previous works from his recent films, but then again, not really when u compare it to the brilliance of Lamhe or deewar...

Yes I agree...his last few works werent great. But we cant club him among the directors whose best work was his first film. Yash Chopra has had a fabulous line up of films:Ittefaq, Waqt, Deewar, Kabhi Kabhi, Trishul, Kala Patthar, Silsila, Mashaal, Chandini, Lamhe and even Darr. And he's made these films over 4 decades starting from the late 50s to early 90s.

^^i agree with tht point but since it was abt directors sort of "losing their touch", i found it fair to include YC as well..

i mean RGV was bloody brilliant with Satya, Company, Shiva (the old one)...even with Kaun, Bhoot n stuff...he wasnt someone who was a flash in the pan with 1 hit...but someone who gradually declined to wastage...although YC didnt decline to the extent RGV did, he did noticeably lose his touch...

Yash Chopra basically lost his touch once his son started interfering.

If this is indeed true, God save us from Sajid Khan's future presentations.

Brilliant discussion folks, keep them ideas flowing!

Guess-who as usual makes a very valid point. Terrifying, but valid.
