How did you enter the television world?
I've been involved with theatre right since my school days and have been a part of English theatre in Delhi. Theatre consumes a lot of time and with my busy television schedule I can't commit to it, the way one needs to. After shifting to Mumbai, I did manage to act in a couple of plays like Class of '84, along with the TV projects. But it's with the launch of Zee television that I entered television world.
Which were your first television serials?
I started my TV career by anchoring a game show called Tol Mol Ke Bol and then did a serial called Banegi Apni Baat.

Tell us about your current television projects.
Currently, I am working in serials like Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki as Sanjay Doshi, K Street Pali Hill as Aditya Khandelwal on Star Plus and Ek Ladki Anjaani Si on Sony TV.

From theatre to television, so do we see you on big screen soon?
I am an actor and I think the medium should not matter much. I did get offers for films but the roles were not so exciting and appealing. However, if I get any good offers, I would definitely like to work in films too. I always, give importance to the role that I'm offered, than the medium or production house. Be it theatre, television or films I enjoy it all equally.

Your most memorable role on television, so far.
I've portrayed a variety of roles on the small screen. Each role has its own special strengths and weakness. I've thoroughly enjoyed doing each of these roles. Each of these characters has been special to me. It becomes difficult to judge one role as the best from amongst so many.

Urvashi Dholakia

Ashwini Kaslekar, Kamya Punjab

Sai Deodhar, Tasneem Sheikh

Sudha Chandran, Shubhavi

The Vamp Empire

Urvashi Dholakia- It is sometimes difficult to decide who is more overdressed - Ramola or Komolika. Urvashi's look as Komolika in Kasauti Zindagi Kay wins hands down at times. Her character Noinika in Sony's Rishton Ki Dor, though, is less gaudy. There is also a debate on whether Noinika is less evil than Komolika. The justification? Noinika has had a deprived childhood in Rishton… Whatever the justification, Urvashi plays the repelling vamp convincingly.

Ashwini Kaslekar- Ashwini as Jigyasa from Kasamh Se plays Ram Kapoor's sister who wants to get her hands on the family property. She has mastered the art of being subtly evil in the serial.

Kamya Punjabi- Her eyes say it all. Playing Divyanka Tripathi's sister-in-law in Dulhann, Kamya is one of the more realistically portrayed vamps on Indian television. Pretty, without trying too hard, Kamya is the dominating sister-in-law (Sindura) who wants to get back at her father because of whom her mother committed suicide. Cotton saris, natural make-up, minimal jewelry make her stand apart from other overdressed vamps.

Sai Deodhar- Sai's role in Kasauti Zindagii Kay is that of Debonita who is obsessed with the man she loves. She is dressed like any regular young girl. The actress feels that it is acting skills (or the lack of it) that make negative characters convincing or unreal. Looks don't play much of a part in it.

Tasneem Sheikh- Who could miss the 'Mo-o-hiniii'. Her character as Mohini from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is a strange mix of comic and evil. She is one of the most animated characters on television who makes 20-odd faces in 30 seconds! Lovely hair, spare make-up and non-garish saris make Mohini a character you can love or hate. But you can't ignore her.

Sudha Chandran- Here is one actor who made the TV vamp look scarier than ever before and expressed it effectively through sheer over-dressing and loud gesturing. While Sudha's look as Ramola Sikand in Kahiin Kissi Roz was all about loud make-up, larger-than-life bindis and garish costumes, in K Street Pali Hill she is far more subtle. Although she still plays the dreaded vamp, in K Street… she is not glaringly evil but more cleverly portrayed as a sweet-though-cunning character. Is Sudha consciously trying to break away from the typical vamp mode by dressing realistically?

Shubhavi- From playing a lawyer who secretly loves Mihir in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi to an outright husband-snatcher, Shubhavi's role as Meera in Kyunki… is an interesting blend of a woman who is frustrated because of unrequited love and still manages to be liked by Tulsi's mother-in law. Her hallmark is her dark-colored saris that she drapes Mumtaaz ishtyle.

Saas-bahu dandiya nights

September 26, 2006

Riva Bubber

I will not be able to travel out of Mumbai for shows -- as much I want to -- because of my shooting schedule. But I will attend a few in Mumbai.

In the last few years, I have travelled a lot for these shows and had a blast.

I don't really have too many ghagra cholis so I guess I will wear a sari for the function.

"God is not a person but cosmic power"

There are times in all our lives, when we desire the need for divine intervention; times, when life refuses to acknowledge the seemingly obvious and decides to take refuge in a world that is far away from ours. A world that gives the body and mind the spiritual healing that it yearns for. We, at Telly Chakkar.com decided to delve deeper into the lives of our favourite stars and know a little about their lives beyond the obvious.

Veteran TV and stage actor Rituraj Singh who currently has K Street Pali Hill, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki and Ek Ladki Anjani Si on his plate, is quite a spiritual man off screen.

He religiously practices the surya namaskaar (paying respect to the Sun God at sunrise) and is a firm believer of the cosmic power and cycle of karma!

Anil Merani engages in a soul enriching conversation with this 42 year old Suryavanshi Rajput.

" Our past karmas decide our present"
God is not a person but cosmic power
God pervades everywhere and is in every living being, be it humans, plants or animals.
Whatever we do or think, is all at the command of this power, but these instructions are not arbitrary. Have we ever questioned as to what power or battery is there, that gives genesis to a human being or what causes the seasons to change, what keep the planets in their orbit around the sun? All these natural phenomenas are also controlled by the cosmic power.

Karmic accounts of our previous life dictates our present
It's karma that decides what we get in our current lives. That explains why some people are born healthy while others die at birth. The world is a very unfair place to be. One sees injustice all around and are helpless about it. I believe that our karmic account either allows us to learn from our mistakes or condemns us if we repeat them. This could be the reason why human beings never learn from history and keep committing the same blunders over and over again while there are people who reach great heights despite all odds.

"I worship the Sun God every morning"
There is divine purpose for whatever happens
Be it good for bad, everything happens for a reason, which is meant for our well being. Actually I started believing in this theory because of my own experience. When I was young, two drastic events occurred which changed my perspective. It forced me to admit that there are things which are beyond human control.

My faith in surya namaskaar
I worship the Sun God every morning. This pooja was taught to me by a person from my past life in my dream. Whenever I practice this ritual for about 10 seconds I feel uplifted, as if I am on top of the world. It lightens my day and brings equilibrium in my life. So, I try not to overreact or go to any extremes in any given situation. I don't feel too happy by positive events or saddened by bad incidents.
