An hour later, Geet came down the stairs to gasps of "Wow" and "You look beautiful". Geet blushed at receiving such praise.
Rano had spent most of the previous night looking at ways to improve the lengha or at least make it look decent. Finally she had found a solution. Although there were many colours in the lengha, the accent was gold. Rano had trawled through her wardrobe and those of all the other females in the family to find some gold material that would complement the many coloured lengha. She found an organza dupatta that would do the job.
In the morning, Rano asked Geet to put on the outfit to see how she could style it. Geet put on the skirt and so-called choli. The outfit looked scandalous to both of them...so much flesh on display...she could not go before Daarji or Brij Veerji wearing it. The skirt sat a good 2 inches below her belly button; the cups of the choli barely covered her curves, and actually pushed them up accentuating her cleavage. As for the back, there wasn't one. One string at the back and one around the neck held the choli in place. Geet looked in the mirror and giggled as she thought, "one sneeze and I will lose this choli!" Rano draped the extra gold dupatta in such a way with a few pins, that it covered the barely there choli as well as Geet's waist, back and upper arms so she was decently covered. The beautician kept the make-up very natural looking and subtle. Geet's hair was piled up into a messy bun onto which the original dupatta was laid. Her jewellery was kept to the bare minimum acceptable for a new bride, consisting of jhumkas, a maang tika, a single necklace, a waist chain, payals and her choora. The overall look was very stylish and as for the clashing colours of the lengha, they seemed to pale in contrast with Geet's beauty.
Maan dressed in his sherwani was waiting at the mandir with his munshi , Ms Roy and the pandit. Maan who was normally a very calm person, felt very anxious waiting at the mandir. He kept pacing and looking at his watch, while he contemplated the reason for his anxiousness. Was it because he was getting married? Or getting married to Geet? Or the fact that she hadn't arrived yet? She hadn't arrived yet of course since Maan arrived at the mandir an hour early to make sure that the wedding preparations were complete and that everything would run smoothly.
He was deep in thought when he heard his munshi say "They have arrived Sirji". Maan glanced over at the fleet of cars arriving, decorated with flowers. His heart began to race as he looked at the door of her car opening. She stepped out of the car and looked up to see Maan staring at her, directly into her eyes. Their eyelock only lasted a few seconds, but was enough to make Geet's heart do summersaults. Rajji who witnessed the eyelock, began teasing Geet. Nudging Geet she said "Didi, first get the wedding over with, then you can stare into Jiju's eyes forever", making Geet blush and look away from Maan. She didn't dare look at him again for fear of more teasing from Rajji.
Another who witnessed the eyelock, was Ms Roy. Ms Roy would have avoided being part of this sham marriage as she saw it, if she was not duty bound and somewhat curious of how Maan would react to Geet's outfit. She had the marriage certificate which once signed by Maan and Geet, would be filed with the court in Amritsar. She fumed with anger at the sight in front of her. Not only had Maan barely acknowledged her presence in favour of looking at Geet, but Geet had managed to look great despite the awful outfit.
Maan kept looking at Geet's face though he could no longer meet her eyes. He smiled and thought "She looks beautiful, like an angel, so unlike our first meeting". Then his eyes drifted downwards to take in her outfit. "What the hell is she wearing", thought Maan puzzled. "Did I order something that bizarre?? Either the designer has sent the wrong outfit or Geet deliberately chose something else. Surely this outfit couldn't be her choice? I know she wears traditional clothes, but really, this is her choice? I will have to ask her later about it." Before he could think further about her outfit, the pandit ushered both Maan and Geet to the mandap.
As they stood opposite each other, Maan tried to make eye contact with Geet, but she managed to avoid his gaze. They exchanged rings and then the malas. After this both sat down in front of the fire and the pandit conducted a traditional wedding ceremony. Maan tied a mangalsutra around Geet's neck and adorned her maang with sindoor. Everyone present was happy with the wedding, that is except for Ms Roy.
Once the wedding was over, both Maan and Geet took Daarji's blessings and signed the marriage certificate. They were about to leave in Maan's car, when Daarji said, "Maan, you are now part of our family in HP. It is not right for you to return to the guesthouse. I have decided that until you leave for Delhi, you will stay with us at Handa Haveli". Unable to refuse, Maan agreed and asked his driver to take them to Handa Haveli.
