I didn't put any words in your mouth. I was just simply replying to your post. You wrote that back in the day only vamps did such stuff. Weren't the kids and the young ones watching back in the day? Your response to Radhe's point that item numbers were there back in the day was to highlight his statement vamps were shown much more back then. You lamented the lack of clear distinctions, and that actresses do what used to be limited to vamps or item girls.

So was there no problem back then for the young minds when they watched all the vamps back then, dancing with little clothing and provocatively? Was/is the sexual content diluted because they vamps and item girls did it and not the A list actresses?

No wonder some men think its their right to rape women,? if actresses repeatedly preach alcohol and seem so easy to seduce by just a miss call then idiots will think its true, but these actresses have dozens of body guards its the innocent women on the streets bearing the brunt of this pop culture

I saw Fevicol Se and really thought how disrespectful and degrading it was that Kareena was mouthing lyrics about being a tandoori chicken etc. Seriously?! who came up with such crap lyrics? And then we hear about being from the Kapoor Khandaan and all that jazz and we'll probably be hearing now about how she won't do certain things because married and from a Nawabi family.

But the actual topic was on whether the item numbers are THEMSELVES degrading, not on whether they influenced public behaviour.

Item songs do objectify women. There are songs like Munni, Chikni Chameli and Fevicol Se that I feel are degrading to women.

I find this trend of having these top female actresses vying for item numbers as troubling. It really does diminish their worth as actresses because they just become known for shaking their bodies. It's a two way street; they get to be in more films, they get hit songs and they can prolong their longevity, but it also hurts their images as actresses in the long run.

I read a little more into the thread. I don't think these songs/movies/images alone are what is causing degradation and misogyny out in society. They really just reveal the scope of the problem. Issues like these are more than just the result of the entertainment industry. So I feel censorship should not occur (except to protect the little 10 year olds) and that censorship alone will NOT stop crimes against women. There needs to be more institutional changes as well as more effort into teaching men that no means no, and for women what their rights are and to take charge.
