Virat woke up next morning and Manvi was already gone. He looked for her all over the house worried. There was a text in his phone- I won't be back until late night. Relieved, he called her, she didn't pick up.
He kept calling her all day; no response.
"Whats wrong Virat?" Rahul asked him at the hospital. He told him everything.
"Relax dude, maybe she is stuck in a lab or something."
"Nahi yaar, she was upset last night" Virat said looking at his phone for the hundredth time.
He couldn't focus at work. He left early to meet her at her campus. On his way in, he ran into a friend of hers in the hallway, who informed him that Manvi hasn't come to college that day.
He got really worried now. He called all her friends asking for her whereabouts. Nobody knew anything. He looked in the library, the streets around the college, house, gym and every other place she might have gone to. His heart was sinking thinking about all sorts of things that might have happened to her. He cursed himself for leaving her alone last night.
It was eleven in the night and there was no sign of her. Dejected and lost, he was standing at the entrance of his apartment complex, looking up to see if there is any light in their house. Should he call the cops? Should he let his bhai know? His heart was racing. He had to do something.
Manvi got off a car at the entrance and waved at the driver. As she turned to go into the complex, she saw Virat. There were a hundred different questions in his eyes, but mainly he seemed relieved seeing her. He ran to her and hugged her. "Manvi, where did you go?" He scanned her top to bottom. "Are you ok?" he asked her worriedly. She didn't respond or hug him back.
"I am fine. Why are you outside?" she asked and walked away indifferently without waiting for him to answer.
He followed her upstairs silently. His emotions changed from desperately worried to raging angry in a matter of a few seconds. He stood still in the living room waiting for an explanation. It didn't look like he was getting one. She went into the kitchen and started cooking as if it was any other day.
He tried to control his anger, he wanted to give her a chance to explain herself "Manvi, where were you all day?" he asked taking a deep breath.
"Don't we have any onions?" she asked him rummaging the cupboard.
"I am asking you something, Manvi." He asked her unable to believe her recklessness.
"So am I, do we have onions or not?" she asked, still searching.
'Please leave Virat. Why are you torturing me like this? I cannot talk to you right now. I can't even look at you. It hurts too much.' She was talking to herself.
He became furious at her silence. He pulled her away from the cupboard and pushed her to the wall with both his hands clutching onto her arms. He yelled at her on the top of his voice. "Did you go deaf? WHERE THE HELL WERE YOU? Do you have any idea what I went through this evening? I searched every nook and corner of the city like a mad person. And what happened to your phone?" he asked, snatching it from her. "158 missed calls, 30 messages" He held the display so close to her face that she had to turn away. His eyes were blood red. "Why do you need this stupid phone when you don't use it" he asked her smashing the phone on the ground with all his force. Manvi shuddered unable to believe him."I went to the hospital and looked at the accident cases, dreading to see you on one of those beds, you moron! What the f*&^ is wrong with you?" his screamed at her face.
Manvi stood against the wall frozen to the spot, her whole body was tensed. She was scared of Virat for the first time, she had never seen this side of him. Tears were dripping off her face.
She couldn't sleep last night. She didn't understand what she was supposed to do. She was devastated that Virat ignored her. She didn't want to see him, she needed a break, to recompose herself, process the happenings. And now here he is, fuming at her. She understood how worried he must have been all day, but she he didn't anticipate it. 'Damn you Virat! You cannot not care and care at the same time. But, why is he worried? Why does he react so strongly about her? She remembered all the things he had done for her in the recent past: how he stood up for her in front of his whole family, encouraging her, no, ordering her to follow her dreams, he has been adjusting in this house, only because she liked it, and all the other sweet little gestures.
He moved away, closing his eyes with hand. He gazed out through the window and after a couple of minutes, he went back to her, holding her arms again "Manvi, I was worried about you. You were gone all day without telling me where you were. Why did you leave like that?" he shook her, his voice trembling.
"I messaged you that I will not be back till the night Virat." She mumbled. "I honestly didn't check my phone all day. I was with di, I wanted to see her today, we went to a temple to perform a small ceremony for my Beeji." She crumbled onto the floor. 'What do you want from me Virat?' She couldn't comprehend.
It suddenly dawned on Virat that it was this day, a year back that her beeji passed away. All his anger vanished. He felt ashamed about how he reacted. "Ohh Manvi! I am so sorry" he went to hold her. She pushed his hand off and wiped her tears. He sat besides her feeling terrible, mad at himself for bursting out on her "Manvi, why couldn't tell me that? I would have come with you." He said, his hand on her shoulder.
"You weren't even talking to me. I didn't know what to do. Why would you not talk to me?" she broke down.
She had made up her mind to forget everything, to get back normal. She spent the whole day trying to explain it to herself that just because she likes him, does not mean that he has to feel the same. Now, she realized how stupid it was to think that everything could be forgotten. Just looking at him, brought all her feelings back, stronger.
"Because I am an idiot, I am a jackass, I am so sorry sweetie, please, please stop crying." He pulled her close to him with his arm around her. She stopped crying and looked at him as he wiped her tears off gently. She realized where she was, she could feel his breathing on her neck. She closed her eyes for a second and looked away. She stood up wanting to get away from him. Virat didn't let go of her hand "Manvi, I am sorry. Please, let's forget all this" he said.
"I can't" she said. She shut her eyes tightly as drops of tears rolled down "Don't you see Viraaat? I am falling for you, I never imagined or wanted to, but I am" she confessed. "I can't hide these feeling from you or can't forget them." "I understand that you don't have to feel the same. But, I need some space, maybe we should stay away." She said firmly.
This was what he was scared off. He shook his head, took a deep breath and stood up, still holding her hand. He got up as if he was carrying a big rock on his head. He turned her to face him. He was going to say that she should do whatever she was comfortable with and that he will do whatever is required to make her feel comfortable and happy. But, looking into her eyes, he couldn't utter any of those words. He just stood there overwhelmed. Her eyes were filled with love and also deep hurt; there was pain and longing in them. He couldn't let go off that hand, he held on to it more tightly.
He gently touched her cheeks "Manvi, there isn't anything I want more than you right now." He said, as she looked at him in surprise. Those few words liberated her from all the confusion.
"But...'" he was about to continue.
"'...and there isn't anything I want more than you, Virat." she said lost in his eyes.
"Manvi'.." he started to say something. A part of him wanted to leave her alone, not play with her feelings. He was never serious about his romantic relationships. Yes, they were nice as long as they lasted, but they never lasted for long. He didn't like adjusting or compromising or commitment. True, Manvi was a lot different, he always treated her as his own, like family, but what would happen if the flame is out. 'How can I be so selfish he thought' This is Manvi, his best friend, his partner. He knew how serious she was about him and she would not be able to bear it, if things didnt work out between them. And to add to all this they were already married. What would happen to the arrangement between them.
Another part of him wanted to sweep her off her feet. He couldn't deny himself of those lovely dove-shaped eyes, he wanted to drown in them. So what if she is his friend, she is a grown young woman and they both are mature adults. If both of them feel intensely about each other, why should he hold back? And the most important thing was Manvi was as into him as he was, she was going to move away either ways. She was going to get hurt either ways. Maybe giving it a chance is not such a bad thing afterall, he began to reason.
"Virat.." she called him back lovingly. His brain refused to function. He threw his whole dilemma out of the window. She arose in him, untold desires and passion. He pulled her close. She was smiling softly and blushing. He was staring at her, unable to take his eyes off her. Slowly, she put her hands around his neck. His breath was getting heavy as he touched his forehead to hers. He traced her face- her eyes, cheeks, lips with his fingers, sending shivers down her spine. Her reaction to his mere touch was driving him insane. Pulling her tightly in his arms, he leaned in to kiss her, slowly at first and then fiercely; she kissed him back. She was leaning back and he was coming onto to her strongly; he pushed her back against the wall and the kissing was getting violent. He moved to her neck and shoulders; his hands slowly moving around her waist, making her quiver. He pulled off her top off hurriedly, as she was unbuttoned his shirt. He scooped her up in his arms and carried her inside as she ran her fingers through his hair and kissed him back. He placed her on his bed and looked at her smitten by her cute expressions, her grace, and she looked so different; he couldn't point out how exactly.
A red tinge came over her face and she looked away embarrassed, pulling a blanket over her face. "What???" she asked from inside the blanket.
He snatched it away. "You look so good that it hurts sometimes." he sang smiling and enveloping her in his arms.
