Saroj Khan says she has no intention of misguiding contestants.
She is a firebrand alright. And the infamous temper shows up when fingers are pointed at her art. She hollers when quizzed if her songs from 'Don' are inspired from the older version "Are you mad? Why should I copy P.L Raj? I am not short of dance steps. I teach choreographers and don't need to resort to copying".
On 'Nach Baliye 2' (Star One), she says, "The dancers of this season are much better than last year. Most of them are natural dancers and their grades prove that. But I have no favourites because that will hamper my judgement." Though she admits that Shweta/Maanav, Shweta/Raja and Tanaaz/Bakhtiyaar are a tough team to beat.
As a choreographer of repute, who would she credit for a good or a bad performance? "Definitely the choreographer and not the artiste! He is the teacher and his movements should make a donkey dance with grace. Chadi (stick) mein dum hona chahiye, tabhi sahi hota hai," she exclaims dramatically.
No wonder, rule of the stick is her dictum. Is that the reason for her rudeness when judging? "I would call myself blunt, not rude. If something is wrong then I don't mince words. If I did that, wouldn't I be misguiding them," is her explanation.
But a good performance also guarantees immediate appreciation in the form of ceetiees and which is Saroj's trademark. "It comes straight from the heart," she quips.
Though the likes of Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit have danced to her tunes, there aren't any favourites. "Today every girl is a good dancer. They come having done their homework well. So, I really can't pinpoint the best," signs off Saroj.
