LookBack 2012: Shailesh Kapoor on 10 Things that Defined 2012 for Television

By Shailesh Kapoor

It's been more than an eventful year for the television industry in India. Digitization in the four metros is finally a reality (almost), and this sets the ball rolling for the nationwide digitization that we all eagerly anticipate. It was also the year of tussle on the measurement side, with the NDTV lawsuit setting the cat amongst the pigeons. I hope 2013 is remembered as the year of BARC, where we see a new, more robust currency research being set up by our industry bodies.

But besides these two key areas of activity, 2012 was also a year of a lot of action on the content and marketing front. Here is my pick on the top 10 events or trends of the year, which may have a lasting impact on the industry in the times to come.

9. Mahadev rewrites mytho rules: Almost all the success our television has seen in the mythological space has been 'calendar art' in nature. With its more atypical yet extremely entertaining treatment of Mahadev, Life OK ushered in a new trend. The programme managed to build popularity as the year passed, and this, in turn, should encourage other channels to break the stereotypical mytho mould, starting with MaaDurga on Colors. After the failed experiment in Mahabharat on 9X, Mahadev has proven that some of the holy cows of the mytho genre are overrated.

JJMD is a pure unadultrated hard-core mythological ,its presentation isnt ANYTHING like DKDM
looks like this writer hasnt watched the two shows that he is making a comparison😆

DKDM is a masala mix mytho😆-DKDM i feel got the mixture right
-it has drama-romance(maybe missing off late),comedy, emotions, everything put in perfectly-along with being a mythological DKDM is entertaining too
maybe not mythological accurate-but it has both its heart and brains in the right place-thats why it clicked

BTW-WHY ON EARTH is this guy comparing Kahaani Humare Mahabhart Ki with DKDM🤔-that show was horrible means horrible means horrible!that show still gives me nightmares after i watched one episode😳

thanks for the article Tanu😊

To be honest, to date, I've not seen ONE good serial or movie about either Mahabharata or Krishna. BRC made things up as liberally as KHMK, Ramanand Sagar's Shri Krishna too was all over the place and they too made things up that were just not believable, both Jai Shri Krishna & Dwarkadheesh were horrible - actually, I doubt that any PH has the capacity or the will to do a thorough serial on Krishna/Mahabharata from start to finish. The actors just couldn't take it, and some of them would surface after long periods.

To be honest, DkDM has been pretty bad about making up stuff as well.

Mahadev has won because of a treatment which is loved by one and all. Human side of Mahadev is something not shown in other shows. here Mahadev is a very dutiful husband and a very caring father. this side appeals to family audience. Story wise it might be not to the mark. Most has been twisted to suit taste of diff audience. But cannot deny Mahadev is only mytho that has blended it well to make it a show loved by one and all and a hit on prime time.

@Vrish-stories are always made up-thats pretty much unavoidable!but i agree Mahabharat and Krishna have been messed up

DKDM has made up stuff too-i will NEVER deny that-but they somehow managed to get away with some of it
some things were pretty hard to digest-that i will admit
never the less it is entertaining

i watched DBSK and it gave me a nasty headache, but i think KHM ki takes the cake in being the worst mytho i have ever seen-My POV😆

btw-a new Mahabharat is comming on SP-hope atleast that gives justice😊

DKDM is today's generation's Mytho, enjoyed generally by all the age group people. they've never mentioned any particular source for picking up their stories & have generally experimented with different versions at times creating their own too. The best part about this show is it has managed to pull viewers, indicating this modern version works because it is different. Inspite of all it's making up of various tracks it is the best Mytho I've seen till date. It can not be compared with KMK, which was🤔

Aren't most of the fiction shows inspired from some or other stories of Mahabharat?
SP Mythos are always better, Ma Shakti was a good show.
