Hmm I see. I'm Muslim too and I guess, in contrast to you, I'm not disappointed by how they have portrayed the families. When I look at my family or those around me, I see elements of what they are showing. My favorite example is this one of hypocritical brothers/men:

(portrayed well by Asad): I know many who 'deviate' on varying levels, examples being premarital relationships, flirting, drugs and what not. But when it comes to their sisters, they keep a strict watchful and hypocritical eye on them, examples being not allowing them to talk to boys, have male friends, have boyfriends and much more. Similarly, mothers give their sons more freedom while they restrict their daughters.

I think my POV boils down to me having expectations from this show on a cultural level rather than religious level- I don't want this show to go from ideal to ideal. I want the characters in this show to go from realism (and hypocrisy/double standards are very real in humans) to a more ideal and fair way of life (where people let go of hypocrisy as they engage in self-introspection).

As for Pakistani shows: I'm not Pakistani but I watch them from time to time. And while they may not have the pomp and exaggeration (or understatements) that this show has (and they are definitely much much much more realistic), they do show families not really in line with religion.

Good discussion though. I was just curious. Hope you don't take any offense. I definitely don't mean any. :)

Guys...really nice discussion. Although I am not a Muslim...i am a hindu. I would like to share something ...my very good friend is a Muslim and a very close family friend. Her mother always dresses in traditional shalwar kameez but I haven't seen her cover her head ...never inside the house or outside...she is an extremely progressive lady and hence she brought up my friend in that way I guess...my friend on the contrary is always in western clothes...she only wears traditional clothes in Eid or Diwali. And the fact about having two wives...I did ask aunty about it and she mentioned that such things happens in the uneducated and not so privileged parts of the society. Educated and progressive families doesn't follow such norms.

So clearly you can understand that I cannot relate to the women in QH because I have seen very different women.

Honestly I was drawn into QH because I wanted to see a lovestory in a different setting...but then I liked Surbhi as Zoya.

You know what growing especially throughout my high school days I had a very difficult time because my parents especially my mother wouldn't let me go out anywhere while my brothers had more freedom. My mom did favour my brothers more it was obvious she had a softer spot for them.

In Islam I guess it doesn't matter what you wear it just has to be modest. Just because you're Muslim doesn't mean you can't wear jeans and shirts it's HOW you wear and represent yourself.

With me it's religious because from the bat they introduced the show as the lives of Muslims and saying Asad as religious person.

Sexism is not a religious thing BUT it does happen a lot in Islam. Which is one of main points of the show. Props for going with this storyline.

Like I'm not complaining I watch the show but I don't freak and go haww when I see someone not covered up or doing something not so modest. It's a show.

Oh no I don't mind at all. I like your POV. It's a healthy topic. LOL no one got super religious yet.

Lovely discussion on here and good to see more of my kindred spirits... AshRun, Princessjojo here.

Rupunzale, I'm glad you brought this up, shaz2009 and -a04, I'm glad you raised the points you did.

About yesterdays's episode...

I would have liked Asad to give Akram an earful especially since he had insisted that Akram was a decent chap. So naturally, Asad should have expressed disbelief at the turn of events in strong terms, then told Akram that he was going to leave with Zoya, and Akram and his men better let them leave in peace... They should have shown him being furious, but feigning calm sine the odds weighted heavily against them as they were outnumbered.

But no, what we had was a Bollywood action sequence... I did enjoy the fight but I would have liked it to be shorter. It would have been better if Asad got the cops involved when he heard from the server at the restaurant that a girl was forcibly taken away by some men...

I saw another post which said it would make sense for Asad to take Zoya to a hospital. Yes, he should have... The girl was barely conscious and bleeding. He could have called his family, and they could have met at the hospital... Al the romantic stuff could have happened there... Even the cold shoulder meted out by najma and Dilshad when Asad reaches out to them to explain... I'd have liked them to take charge of Zoya, fuss over her... And Asad to ponder over what he'd done while his minor wounds were tended to.

Off topic, but I was a little peeved that Ayaan and Humeira didn't even discuss reporting the crime against her... It was assault though minor... And I know that in reality, we would have been terrified that our folks would find out the truth... But it would have been good to show that they acknowledge this as a crime and Ayaan asks her to report it but the fear of being found out prevents Humeira from doing so and they decide against it.

My only hope is that for Asad, the day isn't over and they can still show him reporting the crime. When the makers of the show talk about raising awareness, it should move beyond showing men fighting and more to realistic, legitimate action that people like us can take in such situations...

Regarding the discussion on portrayal of religion, which can be a sensitive issue...

While I'm not Muslim, can safely say that in any religion, people comply to the decrees as per their beliefs. While that might mean he or she isn't considered a "true" follower, that is reality. I consider myself a non-practising Hindu, while my brother is devout... Truth be told, we're at opposite ends of the spectrum on religious beliefs. But that's reality... And that's why it's ok for the show to portray people with varying degrees of compliance to their religion.

Sexist attitudes exist in all societies, they're probably more obvious and dominant in some communities, faiths or regions of the world but they're everywhere. Hindu men/ brothers are equally guilty of such double standards... In the producers' other show, we had a Hindu family but there again, we had several instances where the woman had to prove her innocence... E.g. the antagonist's "confession" that the heroine and he loved each other, only had the hero giving his bro-in-law a second chance while forcing the poor girl into a horrible marriage.

That said, I would like the show to portray Muslim culture like -a04 said.. It would be interesting to watch, and like Princessjojo said I would like to see them move away from their current state to a more ideal way of life. At least the protagonists...

thanks Adeeti...you can call me Priyanka...very wonderfully explained...I am so glad to see so many here who thinks alike...also guys...it's been a whole day and night...Asad still hasn't reported this crime...we all gave it a day but it never happened. Honestly , I don't see Asad has any intentions to report let alone even warn Akram. My only hope that Zoya is going to report it once she has fully recovered physically...she seemed very weak.

Now coming to the discussion about the acceptance of religious beliefs as different individuals...just like you I am a non practicing Hindu...although I am an agnostic. I have a brother who has the same beliefs as I have...I think the fact that we as a family are progressive liberals plays a huge role. Me and my brother are both married to ppl different from our race.

Adeeti...I think I have interacted with you in the previous 4lions forum...I completely agree with you about sexism still existing in every society...and in the previous show I have vehemently opposed the here's attitude towards the female lead...it was downright inhumane. The went ahead and promoted manhandling in the name of passion...pathetic if you ask me.

I really don't know what to expect from this show because considering the PH they have a history of glorifying the hero but I hope they have learnt a lesson from the reviews from the previous show...there were huge protests against the male lead's behavior...I hope they stop glorifying insults and humiliation against the women in the name of love and passion.

Ok I had to edit this post big time so that I'm not misunderstood lol. I like the discussion going on her about the inaccurate portrayal of Muslim culture. Glad a04 brough it up, I agree because :
1. In one episode, Humera's Dad is supposed to be going to a manjlis which is a religious gathering that I've seen mostly older members of my khandaan (family ) go to. With a Father like that, I would have expected Humera to be something else. I know, I know children aren't always LIKE their parents, but in the first episodes, all the girls used to get uber scared n seeing her Dad. Now, All we see is Humera taking part in a fashion show to impress Ayaan, chat with someone thinkiing its Ayaan, responds to Ayaan's flirtatious behavior and keeps praying to be with Ayaan. I'm a muslim girl and trust me, most of my friends and I have a LOT more issues in our life. Why can't we see the girls trying to pursue careers of their choice?? why can't we see their struggle to enjoy their teen life while staying within the bounds of their religion. As a04 mentioned, muslim girls go through a lot of things throughout their college life because of peer pressure and religious requirements, SHOW THOSE ISSUEs because it has sooo much scope .
2. When everyone was looking at the star and praying, I wonder why the so-called religious and righteous elders did not stop them and say that in Islam the only way to ask for something is to sit down on a jaanemaaz ( praying mat) and ask Allah for it. Such things like getting your hands read, making wishes on seeing a shooting star, and having tarrot cards read are strictly prohibited in Islam.Plus, they don't happen amongst the kind of cultured family that they are showing Ayaan's family to be.
3. In Islam, if a guy looks at a girl once and finds her attractive, he is supposed to lower his gaze. If he looks at her again, it's a sin for him. We see Ayaan dating girls and flirting with them but Asad never brings in religion and tells him AND the audience WHY it's considered wrong in Islam. Or is the show just about " There were two Muslim brothers. One was judgemental and one was a flirt. "
Like...WOW what a way to represent the Muslim youth of TODAY!
I can go on and on, but I don't wanna bother you guy so I'll FINALLY stop!!

You bang on hit on the spot! You got what I have been explaining.

Nikhat: I get it that maybe there trying to show a problem and the problem being Nikhat skin color and Haseena Bi. A problem and then a way to solve it. Like any show it begins with a problem and it progresses on how to fix the problem BUT that fact is EVERYONE is already aware of the problem and have an issue with it. If there trying to portray the Islam of today especially that is all wrong.

Praying: BINGO. No on prays I once said oh that for religious Asad you don't see him much praying and condicienally some days later there was a scene of him praying BUT that was it. No praying no Quran.

Scarf/Hijab: NO ONE DOES IT expect Razia and she's the worst of them all too lol. Niqab isan't mandatory but Hijab is. I found it so funny when Humaria dad walks in and they start straightening up it looked so stupid because they looked the same as they did before he even walked in. There portraying Humaria dads as strict religious person but I don't see anything like that.

Ayaan/Humaria: LMAO I would get a huge lecture If I was so friendly with a guy like that. Let alone sometimes Muslim parents don't allow as you get older to get so friendly like that with your guy cousins and Ayaan isan't even her cousin doesn't matter friend he's still a guy.

You summed it up in the last part I want a show where I can relate Muslim to Muslim. There not showing any real struggles as a Muslim. Like for example for in the youth people want to get modern but still want to stay close to their religion culture but find it difficult. Show stuff where people struggle and sacrifice. Sexist and girl power isan't a Islamic problem that's society happens in every religion to some extent.

Off the side I don't watch a lot of Pakistani drama but when I did they would have the storyline whatever it is but at some point the main focus becomes God which is the the MAIN thing to being a Muslim you're relationship with God. They would struggle and call for God's help they screw over they would ask forgiveness from God. From the beginning their the bad child and soon progress to reading Namaz etc SO RELATABLE.
