THE HEART KNOWS

CHAPTER 24

Siddharth returned home after the fourth day of the fashion week. He was tired and he stretched out on the couch. Khushi brought him a cup of coffee which he gladly accepted. When she was about to leave, he caught her hand.

"Baito.[Sit.] We need to talk."

She complied.

He didn't beat around the bush. He dived straight into the heart of the matter.

"What have you thought about Arnav?"

She looked down at her fingers.

"Don't tell me that you have forgotten him because it will be a ten thousand percent lie. I have seen you and I have also seen him. Neither of you have moved on."

"Moved on?"

"Towards each other or away from each other. You have to set things straight, Khushi. Either you want him or you don't want him. There is no in between in relationships. Agar tum usse pyaar karti ho, to usse maaf karo. Agar tum maaf nahi kar paaogi, to usse jaane do. [If you love him, then forgive him. If you don't love him, then let him go.] Set him free. Both of you are hurting each other."

A small silence later, he said, "Khushi, I know he made a mistake by not trusting you. And I know that it is hurting you. Right now, you are doing a similar mistake by walking away from him. It is hurting him a lot. Now, you have to decide."

"I don't know. I don't want to trust my heart again."

"You can and have to, Khushi." He held her palm in between both his hands and said, "That is the speciality of love. The person who hurt you the most is the only person who can heal you. Let him heal you, Khushi. You can ease his pain. Both of you complement each other. He can protect you, Khushi."

After a long time, she raised her eyes to meet his. She said, "I don't know what to do, Siddhu. I am frightened."

"You are frightened?" he asked her slowly.

She nodded.

"Tum dhono ki rishtha mein darr ka koi jagaa nahi hai.[Fear does not have a place in your relationship.] But then when I think about it, both of you have your own fears to battle. Remember your nightmare, Khushi?"

How could she ever forget it?

"You were frightened. It was because you were about to lose Arnav. The same thing happened to him. He had a similar nightmare that night and you know how frightened he was. Those nightmares have showcased your real fears. You are afraid that he might leave you alone again and he is afraid that you might never forgive and accept him. I know what your heart wants, Khushi." He paused for a second and said, "Your heart definitely wants that nightmare to not come true."

He put his finger under her chin and made her face him.

"Take a risk, Khushi. Arnav is worth it. Your love it worth it. Theen options hai tumare saath. [You have three options with you.] If you are frightened, take the risk. If you are angry with him, think for some time and sort out your feeling. Aur agar tum usse nafrat karti ho, tell him that you don't want to see him again. The ball is in your court. Tume decide karni hogi. [And if you hate him, tell him that you don't want to see him again. The ball is in your court. You have to decide.] "

Khushi did not say anything. She leaned on his shoulder and thought about the time she had spent with Arnav.

The gentleness she found in his eyes and the cold demeanour were the first things that came to her mind. He had been there for her whenever she was in difficult circumstances. The worst thing was he had not trusted her and it hurt her a lot.

Siddharth brought her back from her thoughts. "Char din mein hum Mumbai waapas jaa rahe hain.[We will go back to Mumbai in four day's time.] I want you to decide within that time."

Khushi didn't reply.

"Khushi?"

She nodded.

Khushi couldn't sleep that night. Siddharth's words repeated over and over in her mind. She loved Arnav and she would never be able to deny that. But what stopped her from running to him and hugging him?

He had told her about their past. Even though she didn't remember anything, her heart ached.

"Go back to him," her heart told her. "He will make you forget your pain."

Her brain contradicted her heart. "Don't go back. Don't place yourself in a vulnerable position. He will hurt you again."

"No, he won't hurt you."

"Can you assure that he won't hurt you?"

She shook her head to stop the fight between her heart and her brain.

All of a sudden she heard Arnav's voice. "Khushi!"

Arnav stood near the door with a broad smile. He leant on the door and hands crossed over his chest.

"Arnavji' Aap?" she said in surprise. "Aap yahaan?"

"Kyun? Main nahi aasaktha?" [Why? Shouldn't I come?]

"Mere kamre mein?" [In my room?]

"Wife ki room mein hi husband hona chahiye na?" [A husband should be in his wife's room, right?]

She couldn't believe it. Aranv was in her house, in her room and he was flirting with her. Her cheeks coloured without her knowledge.

"Lal ho gayi." [It has become red.]

"Kya?" [What?]

"Tumari gal." [Your cheek.]

She touched her right cheek.

He shook his head and said, "Woh gal." [That cheek.]

She touched the other cheek.

He smiled and said, "Dhono." [Both.]

When she was not able to withstand his gaze, she turned around and smiled.

In a serious tone, he said, "Pyaar aur dard ek saath hothe hain. Sirf pyaar karne waale us dard ko mitaa sakthe hain. Kya tum hum dhono ka dard kam karogi?" [Love and pain come hand in hand. Only the person you love can erase the pain. Will you reduce the pain for both of us?]

A single tear rolled down her cheek. She turned around and found an empty room in front of her. She ran to the place where he stood and touched the door. She pressed her forehead on the door and more tears wet her cheeks.

It was the fashion week's last day, the grand finale. Everybody was in awe with the set designs which had combined a fairy tale castle with Indian culture. The seats in front of the stage were arranged like that in an opera theatre. The person, one of the proud owners of the show, who had to sit in the front row, occupied a seat in a corner in the last row.

Every inch of the set reminded him of his Khushi. He closed his eyes and leant back on the chair. A few seats next to him were empty and he was relieved.

Siddharth searched for him and found him in the last row with his eyes closed. He knew that it wasn't a good idea to disturb him.

The show started.

Suddenly Arnav felt a presence near him. Somebody had occupied the chair next to his. He didn't bother opening his eyes to look at the person. A hand held his and his eyes snapped open. He knew the touch.

He saw Khushi sitting beside him with a smile on her face. He did not do anything but stare at her. The whole area around them seemed empty. His ears tuned out the noise and his world had the two of them and no one else.

"Khushi," he whispered slowly.

She smiled.

He raised his hand to her face to touch her. When he was mere millimetres away, he snatched his hand back.

There was a questioning look on her face.

"You are a dream, aren't you?" he asked her.

"Sapna? [Dream?] " she asked. "Do you dream about me?"
