Think about TV, Bollywood or Hollywood Can you name the greats in comedy? Good.

Now check the list for a woman. Didn't find. So wondering 'Where are the women in comedy?'.

On TV you have Supriya Pathak, Ratna Shah, Archana Puran Singh and Rakhi Tandon. In movies? Why is there no genuine woman comedian in bollywood?

Where are the women in comedy? what are reasons for dearth of women in comedy?

After reading you post, the one thing that came to my mind is that are women less humourous.. than men... 😕 do women lack sense of humour?

Well, I dont think so.. I know many girls/ladies with terrific sense of humour.. and here on IF also.. there are so many girls/ladies who have terrific sense of humour..

So now the question is why does movies not show woman as comedians mentioned by realitybites. In most of the movies.. the leading lady has hardly anything to do then sing a song and few dialouges.. Much of the role share or weightage is given to the hero.. and other male sidekicks.. Also from ages in movies, the role of the comedian has been done by a male and hence the there has been a tradition of sorts.. May be none of the directors or writers or producers think that woman can also do comedy.. may be they need to change their perceptive....

Where as in serials.. woman rules.. as role weightage is more towards woman, the story revolves around woman and man is just there to support.. in most cases.. that has been seen..

Thanks for your discerning views👏. I find this statement indicative of the way the men/industry look at women.

Totally agree

Yes it seems the bastion is passed from one man to another. There is hardly any movie where the female lead had a significant track as a comedian-like say Mehmood or Kesto Mukerjee or Rajinder Nath. Recent times Paresh Rawal, Shakti Kapoor, Kadar Khan and more.

Where as in serials.. woman rules.. as role weightage is more towards woman, the story revolves around woman and man is just there to support.. in most cases.. that has been seen..

In serials too the comedy track is mostly enacted by men. The women are either sacrifice queens or evil queens😕

The problem is, today humor in bollywood is mainly ruled by cheap jokes. Women prefer keeping their jokes cleaner, atleast in public 😆 , maybe thats the reason they dont figure in comedies.

I don't think we lack sense of humor. It's only we women who can laugh when our wrinkles show and say, 'isn't my face cute? like that of a wrinkled doggy! forgot the name of the breed..lol)

Whether it was the 60s or 90s Bollywood humor was mostly about weird facial expressions, talking in a strange tone mostly poking fun at an accent of a Non-Hindi speaker be it Johny Walker, Mehmood, Asrani, Keshto Mukherjee or even Shakti Kapoor. I never found them funny as in "Comedian funny". They were funny because of their weird antics. So in my opinion when male comedians are so below standard there is no scope for their counterparts other than talking about their weight or support the male comedian's foolish acts.

I would like to say that we don't have genuine comedians in Bollywood.

I dont think woman make good comedians.just as men cant play the vampish equivalents for they lack that subtlety which woman have... I cant think of any woman who was a comedian yesterday or today besides being a butt of all comedy for some physical or behavorial charateristic.

@ani11: That was Ellen Degeneres who lent Dory's voice in Finding Nemo. I love her. She makes you laugh even while keeping a straight face. We lack the likes of her in Bollywood.

I find Amitabh Bachchan in Sholay when he asks 'Tumhara naam kya hai Basanti' funnier than Jagdeep's Surma Bhopali act. Most of the times I find these comedians as fillers; enjoyable comedy is mostly done by lead actors. Dharmendra in Chupke-Chupke and Amol Palekar in Golmaal were genuinely comical.
