India aims to earn the tag of 'super power' and soon we will be among top three global nations. And yet we can't protect women in our own cities. The fact that a 23 year medical professional was brutally gang raped and severely beaten in a moving public transport bus in the national capital (Delhi) is a matter of great shame. This depravity has sparked fury and anger in our already frustrated nation which sees no justice in any crime, be it corruption, terrorism or abuses against women.
Twitter and Facebook are replete with angry comments, wherein people are demanding for strict punishment for culprits. Our telly world celebs are equally furious about the above gang rape incident and have joined the bandwagon demanding summary justice.

Rupali Ganguly said, "The only option left is to drag these bast**** from the police stations, cut their ba**s off and then hang them in public."

She agreed that this form of vigilante justice might lead to anarchy, "but then we are left with no alternative as this impotent government will do nothing."

"If the accused is poor, he will serve a 14 year jail term, but if rich and connected he will be jailed only for a couple of months and then be out on bail," Rupali went on to say.

And castration is one common punishment all actors we spoke to supported.
"For any man will then think a thousand times before raping a woman," shared Rupali.

While Krystle D'Souza and Kratika Senger batted for the same, Pooja Bedicautioned saying, "It might force the rapist to kill his victim. Plus we have such large number of rape cases, one every 25 minutes, how many people can we have on death row?"

Here Pooja added that, "We need to tackle crimes against women like we do with issues of national security, for rape does terrorize women and their families."

An angry Kratika Senger stated, "One of the common responses would now be calls to make men more respectful towards women. This is all crap; tell me which family would tell their son to abuse a woman? The problem lies in the head of the man and only severe punishment, speedily delivered, will act as a deterrent."
She also does not think that only illiterate people do such things as, "even some high society men are equally crazy."

She also angrily asked, "How will ministers behave if something similar happened to their kith and kin. Would their actions be as lethargic as now?"

Kishwer Merchantt is very furious at the constant allegations that women bring such situation on their head by wearing certain type of clothes. "Bullshit, we should now respond by wear even shorter skirts. Most women who get raped are always fully clothed."

Krystle has a slight different view here as she averred, "Women travelling in public transport need to be more decently dressed. For if you wear revealing clothes and then complain about getting harassed, then you do need a reality check."

Pooja Bedi here opined, "One possible solution is to make the sex industry legal. So sexual frustrated men will have a safer option to vent out their urges. This legal cover will also take care of the rights and health issues of the commercial sex workers as well."

When asked to comment on the viral anger this issue is generating Krystle quipped, "Do all these candle marches, BBM statuses and Twitter feeds actually change anything on the ground for the poor victim who is fighting for her life. The media will also only cover this issue till it is hot and then quietly move on to the next big breaking news. The need of the hour is constant pressure on the government to ensure justice and providing financial help to the victim. If she survives, she will have to live with the stigma of rape her entire life."

In closing Pooja also renewed the old debate of Delhi vs Mumbai in terms of safety of women. "In the maximum city (Mumbai) many women walk at night towards Siddhivinayak temple every Monday night. Would any woman risk walking alone in any part of Delhi after 7pm?"
