A movie initially sells due to good promotions and star power. The movie continues to sell due to positive WOM. Therefore it will make a lot of money based on factors like that. Whether the movie is actually good or not depends on people's individual opinions. For some they'll be paisa vasool, for others, a total waste.
A movie's "hit" status is solely based on profits - if a movie is able to recover its cost, and makes extra, it will become a hit. If majority who watched it didn't like it.. then the movie would have a bad WOM and probably wouldn't do as well. Like JTHJ for example... it stuck around due to star power, but it didn't have the best word of mouth, hence it didn't go around breaking records. If a movie is critically acclaimed, but doesn't do well, it's probably due to lack of stars or lack of effective advertising. But yeah, a status of a film - disaster, flop, below average, average, above average, semi-hit, hit, superhit, blockbuster, ATBB - depends on profits and money; not whether people liked it or not. But if a movie makes a lot of money... the majority probably liked it.
