A movie's "hit" status is solely based on profits - if a movie is able to recover its cost, and makes extra, it will become a hit. If majority who watched it didn't like it.. then the movie would have a bad WOM and probably wouldn't do as well. Like JTHJ for example... it stuck around due to star power, but it didn't have the best word of mouth, hence it didn't go around breaking records.

If a movie is critically acclaimed, but doesn't do well, it's probably due to lack of stars or lack of effective advertising.

But yeah, a status of a film - disaster, flop, below average, average, above average, semi-hit, hit, superhit, blockbuster, ATBB - depends on profits and money; not whether people liked it or not. But if a movie makes a lot of money... the majority probably liked it.

IF WOM is good then movie sells.

Even the repeat value.

...And that's what I said. Movies continue to sell when there's positive WOM. :P

Take a example for JTHJ the movie worked coz it has SRK+Yashji+ARR music. Many would say movie was so good coz their fav in it some would really like it. Now look movie making so much but coz people who went to watch and spent their money but it did not showed did ppl relaly liked it. I think thats what called business is. Well I guess in this industry these things works.
This applies to every movie😆

And that's exactly what gives final verdict of a film.

In past some good flicks were disasters as the story was ahead it's time.

But now Bollywood is going through best phase where any kind of cinema that tends to entertain becomes successful

I am not sure what you are inquiring... I think JTHJ did well (not exceptionally well) due to SRK & Yashji, I agree. And a lot of people who liked it may be biased towards it due to SRK. However, many may have genuinely liked it. It's hard to say. I personally didn't like it. 😆

If a movie makes a lot of people, doesn't it mean that it's popular and majority probably did like it? - It may be genuine likeness or likeness due to biases, but nonetheless the movies were liked.

But a movie that majority likes, you may not. It depends from people to people.

For example a critically acclaimed movie with less BO will satisfy one viewer while disappointing another vise versa. But there are instances where a BO blockbuster caters to viewer's expectations. It's very subjective

Nice topic Sania!
