Whether a movie is good or not is mostly subjective. Someone will scream and shout that a movie like Barfi is quality, while others would like to differ. It all depends on personal preference, and how much a movie earns probably won't change your preference. For example, Ra.One and Bodyguard earned a lot, but were they "good"? According to me, no. According to others, maybe.

There are things like critics/public reviews and user ratings on websites like IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes that give a gist about the majority's reaction towards a movie. However, their liking and preference may not be the same as yours. You may go in a theatre trusting reviews and ratings of others, thinking a movie is good; but you may come out of the theatre with completely contradicting views. A movie's business will usually reflect star power or majority of the audience's opinion... but that does not necessarily translate to the movie being good.

Sania, good topic. 😉 I have wasted so much money on crap movies. But, you take the risk of watching a movie and can't tell if it will be good or bad!

A movie is categorized as super hit/blockbuster/average/flop according to the revenue it generates against the money spent. BO status is not a deciding factor or rather a parameter to decide whether a movie is good or bad quality wise. It depends on the output of the movie and also the viewer's choice

For example a critically acclaimed movie with less BO will satisfy one viewer while disappointing another vise versa. But there are instances where a BO blockbuster caters to viewer's expectations. It's very subjective

Nice topic Sania!

A movie initially sells due to good promotions and star power. The movie continues to sell due to positive WOM. Therefore it will make a lot of money based on factors like that. Whether the movie is actually good or not depends on people's individual opinions. For some they'll be paisa vasool, for others, a total waste.

A movie's "hit" status is solely based on profits - if a movie is able to recover its cost, and makes extra, it will become a hit. If majority who watched it didn't like it.. then the movie would have a bad WOM and probably wouldn't do as well. Like JTHJ for example... it stuck around due to star power, but it didn't have the best word of mouth, hence it didn't go around breaking records.

If a movie is critically acclaimed, but doesn't do well, it's probably due to lack of stars or lack of effective advertising.

But yeah, a status of a film - disaster, flop, below average, average, above average, semi-hit, hit, superhit, blockbuster, ATBB - depends on profits and money; not whether people liked it or not. But if a movie makes a lot of money... the majority probably liked it.

Well have you seen many BIG films get rejected???

Yeah. That's exactly it!!!!

All films that have become Blockbuster or All Time Blockbuster had repeat value for it's targeted audience.
