A NiShal OneShot
She walked away from him as fast as she could, trying to wipe away the tears that were fast finding their way into her eyes with her sari. She heaved a sigh of relief as she saw her make room up; a place where she could hide herself from everyone else. Just as she turned the knob of her door, a hand pulled her shoulders around and she was startled to see her best friend right next to her.
'Hey Nia, why did you run away like that?'
'Um, uh, it was too hot outside so I thought I'll sit in the AC room for a while.'
'Oh great! I'll join you. The heat is really starting to get to me' he said as he pulled her into her own makeup room as if it was his own and locked the door.
She winced. She hated locked doors as much as she hated keeping secrets from Kushal. There was no way to get around either of them.
'So,'
She looked around as he paused, her heart beating at the speed of light, terrified of what he was going to ask her. 'Are you seriously not going to vote for me in Nach Baliye?'
She smiled and said, 'I don't think you'll need my votes Kushal. You have a million fan girls out there who will drive those people at the voting booth mental with their missed calls. Don't worry!'
He smiled and said, 'That's not what I meant.'
Nia knew Kushal would figure out what she wasn't trying to say. That was one thing she loved and hated about him. She fiddled around with the eyeliner and the lipstick in her kit, trying hard to remember the color codes of both of them. The blush was getting over, she need to renew her stock. She tried in vain to distract herself from his questions.
He held her hand and turned her to face him and said, 'You're not happy about Nach Baliye.'
She didn't know whether he was asking a question or framing a statement. Either way, she kept mum.
He shook her shoulders so hard that she was forced to look him in the eye, 'Nia, what is wrong with you? Why are you behaving so distant? Why have you been avoiding me off late? It's like you don't even know me!'
She threw his hands off of her, and glared at him.
'Oh really? I'm the one who has to sit alone all day during shoots and rehearse in monotony, while you come in at the last moment for the final shot and I'm behaving distant? I'm the one who has to go through all the grueling shots alone, I'm the one who has to eat lunch by herself and when you don't return my phone calls or stay and talk after the pack up, you think I'm avoiding you? I'm stay alone on the sets all the time while you don't even say hi during those few times we meet during the day and I act like I don't know you? Seriously, Kushal?'
'I've been busy with Nach Baliye, how many times am I supposed to tell you that?'
'Ugh! Just forget it Kushal!'
She walked away from and sat on the recliner and buried her face in her palms.
He followed her and kneeled down on the floor. He took her hands in his hands and told her,
'Nia, please try to understand what I'm going through.'
' I didn't know it would be so hectic when I signed up NB. I didn't know that I wouldn't get even 5 hours of proper sleep because of it. God, I was practicing until 4 last night, and they called us for shoot today at 7 in the morning! I'm so tired these days I don't even remember what I'm doing half the time.'
'I'm sorry Nia, I'm sorry for leaving you alone so often, but you tell me what the hell am I supposed to do? I'm not avoiding you; I can never avoid you even I wanted to. You're my best friend Nia and you mean the world to me but please Nia, please try to understand what I'm going through. This isn't easy for me either.'
She realized he was right and said, 'I know Kushal. I'm sorry for acting like a baby. But I just, I miss you so much!'
He sighed and said, 'I know. I miss you too.'
She let her feelings known to him, as she always did and told him.
'I miss having fun on the shoots. I miss laughing between shots at your stupid jokes, I miss having rajma chawal with you, I miss chasing you around the sets; I miss everything. Now days, everything feels so boring and tiring! Then, when you were there all the time, even if we had nothing to do except stand like propos for the scene, I had fun. But now, everything is just so monotonous.'
He nodded.
'When you were there with me, the whole thing felt like so enjoyable I never felt tired even if we had to shoot till 3 AM. Remember that time?'
'How can I forget? Our wedding! Good Lord that was such a torture!'
They both laughed as they reminiscence about the good old days.
'I'm sorry Nia. I'll try not to be such a jerk from now on.'
She laughed. 'You say that all the time, but you never change!'
'You really haven't slept well, na? I can see your dark circles. Take rest here for a while.'
'And have another disgusting article written about you in a 'comprising position' with me? I'd rather die than let you ever go through such a nightmare like that again!'
A knock on their door caused them both to jump back in shock. Nia opened the door to find Sehban waiting outside.
'Hey, I just came to say bye to you guys. My last scene done, and well, I guess this is goodbye for me!'
'Aw, it's not like we're never going to meet again!', said Nia and hugged him.
'C'mon man, I'll walk with you till the gates', said Kushal as he got up.
As he turned on the ignition in his car, Kushal told him, 'Hey and thanks again, for taking care of Nia while I was away, and um, keeping her entertained in her my absence!'
He laughed as he said, 'No problem Kushal. She's a sweetheart.'
'I know that.'
'And you're very lucky to have her in your life!'
'I know that too.'
'Do you?'
He looked up in surprise as he saw a mischievous glint in Sehban's eyes. Before he could ask him what he meant, he had driven away, leaving behind a trail of dust and oodles of questions in Kushal's mind.
