PART 8
(Geet's monologue...)
"Sure," I said, smiling. "Sure, we're friends."
Maan smiled back, and relaxed back into his pillow, like he'd been worried that we weren't friends. The door opened, and we both turned.
"Hello, Mr. Squiggle, are you ready for your meds now?" a female nurse said, bringing along a big cart thing along with her. She was very kind-looking - like a nice grandmother.
"Yes." He glared at me, mouthing, "Mr. Squiggle?"
I smirked to myself. Okay, it was a weird name a five-year-old would have picked out, but it just came out when she asked me for his details.
The nurse attached a bag to the IV drip.
"This is just some more morphine, to take away our pain. Your friend told us about how you got shot. I must say, you were very heroic, trying to save a deer from being hunted."
"Well, we strongly believe in Animal Rights," Maan said, lying fluently. Wow. He was amazing. He should be an actor.
"But, I must say, it is very unusual to trip over while negotiating to the hunters, and accidently shoot yourself in the arm. It's the kind of thing that only happens in movies."
"That is true."
When she turned away, to wipe her hands, Maan glared at me.
"Well, good luck on your Animal Rights campaign," she said, finally done. She gave us both a friendly smile.
"Thank you."
She turned, and left.
"You can't let me have an ounce of dignity, can you?" Maan said, bitterly. His eyelids were drooping.
"Sorry, Maan. Couldn't resist."
"You're horrible." His words were slurred together.
I smiled.
"I know."
"I'm just going to sleep now, okay?"
"Sure."
He closed his eyes, and he feel asleep again.
I sat back down on my chair, and leaned back, closing my eyes, rocking slightly. God, I was tired. I'd been so worried...at one point, when they told me he might not make it...I almost cried. Almost. But I don't cry. I haven't cried in years. If I did cry, I would have cried every single day of my life.
"Excuse me, darling."
I jumped up in surprise.
"Oh, hello."
It was the nurse again.
"I just forgot to give you some water. After long sleeps, people tend to wake up very thirsty."
She handed me a bottle of water.
"Thank you," I said, smiling.
"You're welcome, honey. Listen, I just wanted to say...You and your boyfriend. I see the way he looks at you, and I can tell you'll be together a very long time."
"Really?" I asked, my smile gone. "Do you really think so?"
"Trust me. He loves you."
For some reason, my chest ached. I wish was she said was true. I looked back at Maan's calm, sleeping face, and cracked a small grin.
"Thanks. I hope...he does."
Deep down, I guess I really did.

{Maan's monologue...}
I opened my eyes again, and stretched. I felt better now. More alive. My arm still hurt like hell, but at least it would more like a dull ache.
Most of the needles were gone now, all except one, which I ripped out. I've been through way worse. I don't need it. I stood up, and my legs shook, like I hadn't been walking for a long time, but I placed them under me firmly.
There was a bottle of water on the windowsill, next to a note. I twisted the top open, and gulped it down, reading the note at the same time. It was from Geet. It said...
I need to go somewhere. Bye, Maan.
I dropped my bottle. Oh my god. She'd left. She'd run away!
I ran my fingers through my hair, and winced when pain shot through my arm. I can't believe I trusted her. I can't believe she left...I thought she wanted to help me. How could she do this?
Oh my God, it was all over. I banged the window with my fist, leaning against the glass. What am I meant to do now? How am I meant to pay him back? He's going to kill my family! I was in idiot to get involved with the Mafia in the first place...I should've known better.
I looked out of the window, over the forest. What am I meant to do?
There was a police car right outside. Six police officers swarmed round three cars, and one was talking to a doctor.
One of them looked up, straight at me.
I ducked.
Oh my god. They were here for me. Geet betrayed me. She called them.
I don't know what to do. What the hell am I meant to do?
The door opened, and I jumped into a defensive position.
It was Geet.
"Hey, Maan," she said, casually. "I'm back - Whoa. What you doing out of bed?"
Slowly, I walked up to her.
"You didn't leave me?"
"No," she said, looking baffled. "I...went to the restroom. I wrote you a note. Didn't you read it -?"
I pulled her into a tight hug. It was alright. Everything was alright. She didn't leave me. She wouldn't do that. I pressed my face into her hair.
"Um, Maan," she choked out, sounding kind of strangled. "What are you doing? I'm feeling slightly uncomfortable, and..."
"Oh, right." I let her go, but grabbed onto her hand. "We have to run. The police are here."
"What?! Again? How did they...?"
It was suspicious. How did the cops know where to find us, twice in a row? There would be no way for them to know, unless Geet was telling them.
I glanced at her worried face, and immediately glanced away. No. It couldn't've been her. I trust her.
"We have to go into hiding," she said. "For real, this time."
"You're right. Where?"
"Did you also happen to notice the very handy forest outside this hospital?"
"No. I was seriously ill."
"Well, there's a very handy forest outside this hospital."
"That's nice."
She looked at me.
"Do you want to go hide in it," she asked, sarcastically, "or do you want to discuss it some more?"
"Discuss it some more."
She glared at me.
"I can never tell when you're kidding, Maan. I think it's your face."
"Hey, what's wrong with my face?"
She laughed.
"Oh, sorry," she said. "I thought you were kidding there. Uh, never mind. Just grab some supplies. I need to pay for the bill."
"What?!"
"I'll just leave the money on the table. That nurse was really nice, and I don't think it'll be right for us to cheat her -."
"Fine, but be quick.

(Geet's monologue...)
I took out a couple hundred bucks, and found a piece of paper. I pulled out the Sharpie I had in my pocket. I smiled, and scrawled down a message:
I think we'll be together a long time, too.
"Are you done?" Maan yelled, from the window he was working to open.
"Almost!" I yelled back.
I paused for a minute, my pen hovering over the paper. Then I signed.
"Alright," I said, grabbing the backpack I'd loaded with goodies.
"Let's go."
Maan smashed the lock one more time, and the window opened.
"Let's go," he agreed.
Do you know what I signed on that piece of paper?
The Future Mrs Squiggle 😳
I smiled as I jumped out of the window, after Maan.

{Maan's monologue...}
"Where d'you want to put up camp?"
We were in a pretty dense part of the woods now, and I think we were kind of lost. I tried to look on the positive side. If we had no idea where we were, they'd have no idea where we were either unless they had a compass. Which, to be honest, they probably did have. I'm such a pessimist.
"Look, there's a stream up there. Maybe near there?" I suggested.
"So we can drown easier, or...?"
"For the water."
"Which we can drown in...?
"To drink. Since, you know, it's a freshwater stream."
"Oh. That would make sense. How do you know it's a freshwater stream?"
"I don't. I'm hoping it is, or we're screwed."
We walked forwards a couple more metres, and sat down. Geet opened her backpack, and tossed me a Jell-o.
"Thanks," I said, ripping open the packet, and biting into it. I hate Jell-o. But now's probably not the best time to mention it.
It was really quiet, apart from the sound of the running stream.
I was debating whether to tell her the truth or not. About how my Dad wasn't really dead. About how my sister didn't exist. About I was the one who gotten a massive mess, involving my family with the Mafia.
I have no idea where I got my story before from. I came up with something random.
I'm just a pretty good liar, I guess.
"Maan?"
"Yes?"
She was too innocent to be tricked like this. How many chances has she had, to escape? She should've taken it. Now it was too late...way too late. I didn't want to let her go.
I looked at her face, struggling to pick the right words. She was really pretty. It's like I've never really seen her before, but now... I just think that she's beauti-
"Can I have your Jell-o?
I take it all back. She's not human.
