'The Serial' kills the clutter

As television channels vie for attention, switching from genre togenre in their quest for the perfect show, Now a show is set to carve a new telly genre in itself. The Serial is anon-fiction show in which India's most popular TV stars playthemselves as we are invited to a world where "coming-of-age" isconstantly at loggerheads with "coming up in life" and ultimately leads us to the complete truth about our favourite stars.

Seen through the eyes of a 17-year-old named Rohan, it shows Karan Kundra, Pooja Gor and Sara Khan among a host of other well-known television celebrities playing themselves in what is a first on IndianTelevision. As the 'struggler' Rohan embarks on his journey into themuch-sought-after world of the small screen in Mumbai, the realstories of tellyland unfold one by one. Stories which shock andsurprise, stories which last and linger.

Every character in The Serial has a role to play in creating the worldof this unique show. While Karan Kundra is "The Punjabi", Soumya Sethis "The Cutie", Pooja Gor is "The Lover" and Sara is "TheEntertaining" Khan. When they and others like them get together, what's behind the camera comes in front of it and with old truths comenew learnings in life.

The Serial is the latest step in Channel V's consolidation of being the only genuine youth GEC in the country. In the last three yearswith a slew of bold programming initiatives, the channel has had afive-fold increase in its GRPs; thus, becoming a force to reckon within the Hindi Speaking Markets. Already flirting with the top 10channels in the country, if it continues the pace of growth it hasmaintained over the last three years, within the next three years itwill be in the top 4 Hindi entertainment channels in the country amongthe youth, displacing some of the established heavyweights of the industry.

Says Channel V GM & EVP, Prem Kamath: "We are in a unique position aswe've carved a genre for ourselves, away from the niche of musicchannels that are loosely called youth entertainment. With The Serial, which is the most unique blend of fiction and non-fiction programming, we take our march to the next level. The individual stories are stark and they all come together to bring a contrasting perspective ofsilver screen stars, quite distinct from what we know of themotherwise."
