Chapter 2 - Tornados, Hurricanes and Einstein
Her eyes were closed, expression serene. Her red lips were turned upward, hinting the start of a smile. She stretched, pulling her arms above her head and letting out an enormous yawn. Monday mornings. Certainly, they were one of a kind. She loved them. At least, when they meant not moving an inch out of bed. It was summer vacation (undoubtedly, the best time of year). The sun shone brightly, illuminating her flushed face all the more. She turned, flopping onto her stomach. She had a lot of plans for today - 95% of her schedule involving "strenuous activities" such as sleeping. Aah, yes. The goodness of summer vacation.
Hey Devi Mayyia... She murmured, half asleep. God bless the soul who invented beds... Smiling, she curled herself up into a ball, relishing the comforting arms of her bed.
If it hadn't been for the loud (and dare she say obnoxious) voice of her elder sister, she may have, in fact, been laying there the entire day. She opened one eye, looking, exhasperatedly at the person who had dared to ruin her sleep.
"Khushi! Kya kar rahi ho tum?! College nahi jaana hai kya?" Khushi, as her sister had called her, groaned. "Off oh jiji! Even after 3 years of living in America, you're STILL stuck with Hindi! TOTALLY not cool. Good thing I'm here for you... Warna, na jaane kya karti tum... you poor soul..."
Her sister's eyes narrowed as she playfully smacked Khushi on her butt. "Oye! Zyaada bak bak kiya na, tho ek thapad maaroongi! Ab chall." She shook her head, in the most disappointed fashion. "College ka pehla din, aur aaj bhi late."
Khushi rolled her eyes. "Arre jiji. It's summer vacation! Itni jaldi bhool gayyi kya?! College tho agle hafte shuru hota hai!"
Payal raised her eyebrows, feeling quite amused. "Shayad tum bhool gayyi ho... College agle hafte nahi, aaj shuru hota hai. Aur agar tu agle 10 minutes me tayyar nahi hui na, tho mujhse bura aur koi nahi hoga. Maa ne kaha ke aaj pehla din hai, iss liye hum dono ko saat me chal na hai. Shub hota hai."
Khushi's mouth fell open. "Oh Em Gee. Please please pleaseee...Tell me you're joking jiji. This just CANNOT be happening to me. Omgomgomg... school ka pehla din...aur aaj??! holy shit... I'm not ready... omgomg...if I go looking like this, my rep is ruined. I'll be done for! Good bye Khushi. Aaj tho tu gayyi."
She leapt off the bed, suddenly wishing that she was some kind of super-fashionista who posessed the ability to morph into looking a little more...er...sophisticated in desperate times. She rushed to the full-length mirror that hung on the wall beside her bed.
Two words.
Throw. Up.
She could have sworn she hadn't looked this horrendous when she had gone to bed the night before. What could have happened in one night??! In the thirty seconds that spent staring at herself in the mirror, she had considered all the possibilities:
1. She had gone into some kind of tornado while sleepwalking. (Yes, Khushi was maha-prone to sleep walking... but off late, it had been more of sleep-talking).
2. Overnight, her house had been transported through a hurricane (Not likely though. That was more of something that would happen to Dorothy and her dog from the Wizard of Oz.)
3. She had been electricuted and hence, her hair now looked like Einstein's.
4. ...er... outta ideas. So forget the 4.
The point was, she had to get herself together. And soon. She had 6 minutes left. In complete Ninja style, she raced into the bathroom, stripping her clothes off and practically throwing herself into the shower. She couldn't believe this was happening to her. She was Khushi Kumari Gupta. If not the nerdy, know-it-all freak like her sister Payal, she was organized and dedicated to her appearances. And now? She had to walk into an entire college... (one she was completely new to) in THIS state??! Uh-uh. No ways. Never. Not happening.
"KHUSHI!!!! 4 minute baaki hain!!!"
Groaning, she threw the shower head down, ran a quick layer of soap across her body and washed it off... all in 30 seconds flat.
Jumping out of the shower, she then ran a few random brushes through her hair, hoping, now, that she looked a little less like Einstein, if not completely like Khushi Kumari Gupta. I'm so dead. I'm so dead. I'm so dead. It was the only thought going on in her mind as she stepped into a pair of dark blue skinny jeans and a low-neck designer top. She threw on a few black and white bangles and bracelets to match her top and literally flew out of the house, pulling her sister behind.
The two girls reached the gate of the school breathlessly. Payal, especially. She had never been great at athletics. It was always academics for her - unlike her devlish younger sister. "Dekha? I told you we'd make it in time." Khushi declared, with pride. "I'm not as irresponsible as you think Jiji!"
Payal rolled her eyes. "Accha? Last time, tumhaara average kya aaya tha?" Khushi felt her face flush. "Off oh jiji! Tum humesha pichle baaton pe kyun atki rehti ho! You've got to learn to move on, ok?! Aur waise bhi, it's a new year, a new school, new people, new teachers... Aur dekhna. Iss saal I'll definately get high 70s. Promise."
Payal chuckled. "Haan haan, jab dekhoongi, tab maanoongi. Pehle andar chalein?" Khushi grinned, nodding. "This is going to be an amazing year jiji. I can just feel it. Dekhna, iss saal kuch special hoga." Her sister laughed. "Aur ye baat tum har saal kehti ho. Ab agar kuch special ho sakta hai, tho woh yehi hai ke tum ache se pass ho jao." Khushi groaned. "Uff jiji, you're so boring!!! Main har saal kehti hoon, par iss saal... sach me... kuch hone waala hai... I just know it..." 😳
Saying so, both the girls, nervously, and expectantly, took the few steps that were needed to make it into the grounds of the college...
And just as they did so, a certain person looked on at them with a smirk forming on his lips. "Bingo... We have a winner."
