@TM Even though there is scientefic backing to your theory I disagree with it.
People do not dislike mahaan characters like Anandi because they react realistically to situations and they are strong people. It's the strength of the character that determines whether people like or dislike the character. Anandi did not quietly accept her fate when Jagya left her or hide facts from the family. She took charge of her life and moved on and became a much stronger person which is a realistic reaction in my opinion because most humans like to rise above adverse circumstances successfully. I want to think that most people want to be like Anandi and react and respond to situations the way she does because she is such a real character
However I do have a problem with people labelling a character like Simar from the show Sasural Simar Ka (not sure if you follow the show ) as "mahaan" because all she does is hide stuff from the family, creates difficult situations for them and this time she has destroyed her family and made sure they lost everything (wealth, property and the baby) yet she gets labelled "mahaan". Do you think by doing all this Simar is walking on a higher ground? I dont think she is morally higher than me and I dont think anyone aspires to be like her. Simar actually causes the problem and waits for her sister Roli to resolve it for her. I dont think most people would react and act like Simar in real life.
