Chapter 8: Sabar Ka Phal
"How much does Khushi know about sex?" He asked.
NK shrugged. "Not much I guess. In high school, she skipped a week of health during the Sex Ed portion, claiming Devi Maiya wouldn't approve..."
"I see." Arnav smirked with an eye brow raise.
"Yup..." At that moment it dawned on NK what he had just discussed. Turning abruptly to Arnav, his eyes eyes widened. "Wait. WHAT?!" He bellowed. "And why?"
Arnav merely winked before sauntering back to where the family was seated, leaving a flabbergasted NK behind.
Surely Arnav couldn't be talking about Khushi Kumari - Sati Savitri- Gupta, could he?
---
NK ran after Arnav's retreating body and grabbed his shoulder.
"Why?" A slight protective tone laced NK's voice as he stopped Arnav.
Noticing this tone, Arnav raced an eyebrow. "Inside joke, dad." He smirked.
NK frowned. "You guys have known each other for an hour and there's already an inside joke? I feel left out!" NK pouted mockingly.
"Two hours. We met each other last night. Well I met her, but I don't think she remembers it quite as well as I do."
"Damn I knew Kay was drunk..." NK muttered.
The two cousins strolled over to the breakfast table just to hear Shyam's howl be cut short by a shut door.
---
Anjali's eyes widened as she saw the demure girl she had seen ten minutes ago walk across the green of the lawn, huffing and fuming and muttering with a few colorful words, all while yanking a man by the color into her house.
A man who was not the one she has gone on the walk with.
The rest of the Raizada family members reflected Anjali's thoughts as they took in Khushi stomping away. Garima instantly cleared the air by introducing the boy as Shyam, Khushi's best friend. Nani's face instantly reflected understanding as Manorama looked down in annoyance.
"Bhat ish this? Hello hi with Arnav bitwa and bye bye with besht phrend?"
"NAMASTE GUYS!" A voice announced as soon as Manorama's monologue ended. Anjali turned and gasped out loud.
"NK bhai?"
"Bhai?" Shashi asked confused.
"Bhai." NK confirmed smiling gleefully.
"You guys are cousins right?" Garima responded. "I remember NK mentioning it when he came home with Khushi once."
"You know Khushi?" Anjali asked, turning her head back and forth.
"Best friends!" NK confirmed, going around the table to grab Akaash into a hug.
"Small world..." Anjali mused.
And while the family reunion took place, Arnav slowly snuck away to the house that loomed before them. He had a woman to pacify and if the crazy woman allowed it- get to know.
---
"AAHHH!" Shyam yelped, clutching his breast with both his hands. "Pinching my nipple is not funny, Kay!"
"You bet your sweet ass it's not!" Khushi shouted, going for the other one.
"Stop!" Shyam whined, running across the room.
"I hate you Shyam! I hope you have nightmares of vaginas tonight!" She spat.
Shyam visibly cringed and took a step forward. "Let's not go there. So... what do you think?" He asked grinning.
"Of what?" Khushi muttered.
"Of who, darling." Shyam corrected. "I'm talking about the prince charming you were all but swallowing ten minutes ago."
"What?!"
"Chill, Kay, it's understandable. I would've done the same if I were in your position."
"Shah, please, SHUT UP. I was not doing anything of that sort." Khushi glared till Shyam finally accepted defeat.
"Okay fine. He was just breathing on you. Totally normal." Shyam ducked as a magazine from a nearby table came flying in his direction.
"Come on, Kay. Now tell me. What do you think of Mr. Arnav Singh Raizada?"
"Eh... Really freaking outrageously hot, but too in your face and annoying." Khushi responded shrugging her shoulders.
"Oh really?" A husky yet familiar voice interrupted the two from the doorway.
Khushi froze, knowing very well who it was and that he probably heard the last sentence that left her mouth. Devi Maiya, you really love me today, don't you? I really see all the love. Khushi mentally chided her goddess.
"Oh my gosh. I mean hi! I mean it's such a pleasure to meet you! Oh gosh! It's so weird to see you in person, I swear!" Shyam flustered over Arnav as he entered the room, earning looks from Khushi. "I mean I've been waiting for this day. Since like that day I googled you. Oh god!"
Khushi glared at Shyam annoyed at his foolish remarks. For some reason, the way Shyam reacted reminded herself of what she probably should have acted upon meeting Arnav. Dang. The more time she spend with Shyam, the more masculine her mannerisms seemed, especially with him acting like an adolescent high school drama queen on ecstasy most of the time.
Khushi avoided looking at Arnav as Shyam walked forward and grabbed Arnav into tight, slightly too intimate, hug, and then put the shocked looking man back onto his feet.
"Shyam Rosario Manohar Jha!" He introduced himself. "Khushi's best friend since high school, and your biggest fan as of two weeks ago. I must say, it's a pleasuureee to meet you."
Arnav glared at the man- he was a man, right?- and gave a stiff nod at him, forcing a small lip for the sake of Khushi. If he thought Khushi was weird he had obviously underestimated the power of her friends.
"Uh... Hi..." Arnav grimaced what resembled a smile at Shyam. "Nice to meet you, really, but I was wondering if I could talk to Khushi about something... alone."
Khushi chocked on her breath as she heard his last word, and with her back still turned to him, she twisted her face into an expression of horror. What now? More sex talk? What did he want to know? Khushi stared at her feet, willingly the plush carpet to tear as the earth parted and swallowed her whole.
Shyam, of course, didn't let the moment pass. "Alone, I see," He giggled furiously, earning more looks from Arnav as Shyam's gender identity continued to confuse him.
"I guess you need to finish what you started in the lawn," Shyam spoke, his voice climbing in octaves as he held in his laughter. He inched forward to where Khushi stood and leaned into her ear while keeping an eye on Arnav.
"Have fun 'breathing' on him, Kay," he whispered before bursting into a giggly fit as he ran from the room.
---
Arnav stared with an open mouth as the thing, whooshed past him in all its giggling glory. Khushi stared at the door which Shyam ran through, mortified. She had to get out of here.
"Khushi?" His husky voice sent a rush of warmth through her, accelerating her heart beat. "What happened?" He asked, voice tinted with concern. Khushi quickly wiped the look of mortification off her face, and she avoided those molten eyes, knowing their power on her.
"Uh... nothing." She confirmed, looking everywhere but at him.
A firm hand wrapped around her wrist and in two seconds she was pulled towards him, not roughly, but in a way which made her look directly into what she was avoiding.
His eyes were unreadable, but something in them made Khushi lean in slightly, subconsciously. Arnav snaked an arm around her waist and pulled her towards him, and Khushi's eyes grew wide.
"Oh come on, the close proximity is nothing new." He smirked like the devil he was and leaned in closer. "I think we started rather unconventionally, Khushi, but let's not fight fate. In fact, let's keep the flow going, shall we?"
Khushi opened her mouth then shut it as no words came out. "Huh?" She finally managed.
"How about you take me out on a date tonight, Khushi Gupta? I'm dying to see the night life in New York and who better than a well-rounded citizen?" Arnav winked before continuing. "So, what do you say?"
"Me? Take you out?" Khushi tested the idea.
"Yes." Arnav confirmed with a nod. "Keep the unconventional part intact and all."
"Uh... Well I guess."
"You guess what?"
"Okay? Yea sure... We need a better start, I agree." Khushi reasoned, looking directly at him.
"Excellent." Arnav spoke, his voice low and husky and in Khushi's opinion, deadly.
"Nine tonight. Semi-formal attire." She responded.
Arnav gave an affirmative nod and stepped back, drawing back his arms. Though Khushi would've never admitted it, she missed the warmth his proximity offered. Khushi gave a slight smile, a slow blush appearing as he smiled back in that signature lazy half smile.
Arnav turned to leave the room, but stopped as a thought struck him. "Oh, and Khushi?" He asked stepping forward. Khushi turned towards him as he leaned in towards her ear and spoke, his breath tickling her nerves.
"I think you're really freaking outrageously hot yourself." He whispered before leaning into peck a small kiss on Khushi's cheek.
Khushi blushed furiously, as he sauntered out of the room, and cupped her burning cheek. If twenty minutes alone with this man did this to her, how was she supposed to spend the night with him?
---
Arnav walked out of the room with a small smile curling his lips. He definitely had no plans of getting close to this girl when he came here, but two encounters with her and he had changed his mind. Khushi seemed worth it, from what he had seen.
Arnav checked himself into a cool composure before walking back out into the lawn, as his brain remained swimming. It looked like Arnav Singh Raizada had some rethinking to do about marriage.
Marriage with Khushi Kumari Gupta, that was.
