Aparna Tilak feels Indian audience is ready to watch bold scenes on TV
Till recently, Aparna Tilak was best remembered as Rashmi from Family No 1. Her comedy act won her praise, but it also slotted her as a comedy actor. "Yes that was very scary. I was sure that after Family No 1, I won't be offered any serious roles. And that's what happened. I got many roles that were very similar. In fact I was worried that people would start laughing even if I was doing an emotional scene," says Aparna. So, Aparna decided to take a break and wait for the right role. She later signed on Koi Apna Sa that was produced by Ekta Kapoor. Aparna says, "She dared to offer me something against my image. And that really helped me." Aparna returned to comedy with Hello Friends which was adapted from the popular serial Friends. However, the serial failed to strike a chord with the audiences. Aparna, who was playing Rachel's character, says, "Friends had certain jokes and situations that had sexual undertones, we couldn't adapt them. It would have become like a sex comedy. But sex comedies don't work on Indian television." The actor who is now seen as Dr Shalini in Left right Left says that the role has helped her divert from her image. "I get to bond with all the youngsters in the serial. Also, people have started recognising me as Dr Shalini. In fact, my husband Amod who is a doctor is often asked about me." And though she has long working hours, Aparna says she isn't complaining about it. "Once you make a commitment you have to stick to it. An actor may not always agree with the scenes, but one has to trust the creative team. Nothing succeeds like success," she says. Speaking about the increasing number of bold scenes on TV, Aparna says, "Why can't we have kissing scenes on small screen? People have been seeing kissing scenes in serials like the Bold and The Beautiful and Friends. If the scenes are shot well then maybe audiences will see them," she says.
