Keeping aside the basic point of Rahman's music needing time to grow on you, Rockstar still exceeds JTHJ by miles.
And in essence it reflects the different sort of sensibilities that went into making the two movies...Rahman has an unconventional working style and I think the people who manage to keep up with his eccentric working style are the ones who manage to get good work out of him or he can pretty much sleepwalk through a project in a manner of speaking as well.
Which is what I feel has happened in the case of JTHJ...I read some interviews of Yashji (may he R.I.P) where he said he couldn't sacrifice his sleep to stay up while Rahman composed through the night so he never even attended those meetings and left it to Adi Chopra...that sort of shows how much basic "commitment" went into making the music of this movie.
This music is pretty much inane fluff by usual Rahman standards...the only music piece that stands out is the instrumental for the poem...that seems like something worthy of Rahman and not something he sleepwalked through.
Rockstar is a fantastic soundtrack with loads of variety and SOUL in it...from an aur ho to a hawaa hawaa to a kun faya kun...both musically as well as lyrically there is fantastic range in the soundtrack.
That said, even these soundtracks can't beat the CLASSIC Rahman soundtracks like Bombay, Dil Se, Taal...that music is timeless.
I'm particularly disappointed with JTHJ for the fact that it was a reuniting of Gulzar-Rahman...a combination that's given us Dil Se, Guru, Raavan...fab soundtracks...but it didn't live up to that legacy... sadly the lyrics of JTHJ are so NOT upto the standards of what I expect from Gulzar saab either.
