Anywaz....I digress....

My hubby and I are thinking of leaving the US for eastern parts of the world...
we used to live in Singapore and it's nice but we'd like some place new....
we are currently looking at Dubai and Malaysia...so i need to get feedback from all of you who live or used to live in these places.

I need to know about what life is like there (it's different when we're a tourist)?

Cost of living?
schools?
Social life?
driving ?traffic?
Cost of homes?

Ofcourse, we're searching the web and doing other research but hearinf it first hand would be lovely!

Thanks to all of you who take the time to reply.

i have lived in dubai long time ago in the 90's but i just recently visited there and stayed there for 2 weeks so i can give u some feedback,

the cost of living in dubai is preety expensive, many items are highly priced esp if u go to the shopping centres and also the rent in dubai is really very high, i would suggest u to live in Sharjah which is very close to dubai, the rent prices in sharjah are relatively less than dubai

schools is not a problem at all in dubai, there are some very good schools like Our Own High School, indian high school etc

social life is also very good in dubai, u will find many indians out there are also almost all indian festivals are celebrated in dubai so that isnt a problem

traffic is a nuisance in the city esp in the peak hours, driving is not a problem, if u have an int'l license it would be fine, but yeah dubai is left hand drive

hope that helps, if u need more info, just PM me

Hey...I live in dubai right now....Ive been born and brought up here so tht means ive lived here for 18 years now!

Okie about dubai...
Hmm....Living in dubai is truly for those who can afford it....About 2 years ago it wasnt like this...But now due to the sudden boom in development , the cost of everything has gone up steeply... The problem here is that while the cost of living increses periodically, the salary remains stagnant....Which means ....eventually after a few years it gets a lil difficult...

Cost of living really depends on the salary/income you have....

Schools : Again it depends on how old your children are...and what curriculum they attend....Im guessing since you live in the US, you will want them to continue in the US curriculum? Well there are a few american schools here, the most prominent being THE AMERICAN ACADEMY.... The fees is slightly high but i guess tht the rate of tuiton everywhere....

Social life: Again, it depends what kind of people you are...If you are the clubbing kind, theres a fairly good social life here...But if youre the homely kind who likes to spend a lot of time with your family its a bit of a problem, coz there are parks and things but most of the time its too hot to go out and play or whatever...And its really not a very good atmosphere to raise children in...Coz theyll be cooped up inside all the time and they have no interaction with nature whatsoever...I may be speaking for myself when I say that i long to go sit under a tree or in park without the risk of contracting skin cancer/sunburn/heat stroke...

Driving and traffic: Now this is the WORST part of dubai.... Driving here is living hell....Right now since all the roads are dug up due to the upcoming DUBAI METRO project...and traffic is hell....I really really hate the traffic here....

Another thing Cost of homes/RENT: now this is another factor here....The rent here is very very high....For some ppl, company provides the rent and its okay for them...But right now there has been a sudden rise in rents almost 50-75% higher....a small studio flat sometimes costs around 35-40 thousand a year.....u can estimate the price of the others by this....

I know most of the stuff ive written sounds negative...but this is the truth.....I mean I love dubai, its my home away from home....It'll always be...But its a lil disheartening to see the dubai i love changing so fast!

Hope I helped! 😊

Nimmi 😛

Thanks a ton ...for all ur response guys..'

Lisa, Nimmi, Anu thanx for all the info.

I knew Dubai was pricy ...but I think less than Singapore where apts with amenties are running in the millions (Sing$)...

Thanks for the info on the American schools ...I think that's my prime target for the kids....In the US we don't pay for school and since I live in a good burb the schools here are great...

What does distrub me is the climate and lack of outdoor
stuff for the little ones....tell me the options here???

As I mentioned in my original post my option to Dubai is Malaysia ...burbs of Kuala Lumpur....that's pretty green and u can buy a decent house for around 400 K US.

Both places offer good social life/shopping etc.

I guess I should pass this onto my hubby and he can excel all this stuff to do a pros and cons.

Thanks again for all ur feedback. tell me if you think of anything else.

still thinking of moving

I've only been to Dubai once and that was for less than 24hours cause it was a stop-over. But from what I saw in thos few hours was simply wonderful and mind-blowing. If I could....I would love to live in Dubai in a heartbeat. After seeing that fact that their taxi's are mercedes benz.....I think the cost of living might be a little on the the expensive side. But I say go for it. If you wanna live...live happily. In my opinion, Dubai is a great place to live. Its just like living in the west. The even drive on the same side as us (here in canada). Its just amazing. 😃
