Oh God!
Channels probably feel it would be irreverent not to include a Ganesh idol and a week full of Ganpati festival related episodes in their shows. So, even if the story doesn't need it, Ek Ladki Anjaani Si had the leads performing Ganesh aarti just before they could go for their honeymoon. But it was Sony's Man Mein Hain Vishwaas last weekend that must have pierced devout viewers' hearts straight. A sugary episode (ostensibly based on a real life story) had the ultra-devout wife appealing to Ganesh for succour when her husband is diagnosed with throat cancer. She asks for and gets a five-year reprieve from death for her better half from the God. And also gets what she asked for - that she breathes her last just a few months before him!
If the new soaps and shows like "Man Mein... are to be believed, we are heading right back to the Jai Santoshi Maa atmosphere of the 1970s. Scratch a soap and you will find an idol in extreme close-up being petitioned for succour, usually granted.
