Raviyin Review Vilayadal of Maattrraan
Maattrraaan is the one of the most expected film of tamil cinema and it also noted that Maattrraan was the first conjoined twins movie and also directed by the one of the successful directors K.V.Anand who gave blockbuster like Ayan and Ko. This is a come back movie of surya after 7aam Arivu and also the double bonaza is he is acting in a dual role, Kajal Agarwal is the heroine and Sachin Khadekhar, Thara, Ravi Prakash acted in a important role. Music by Harish Jayaraj and lets review Maattrraaan.
Story
Akhilan and Vimalan (Surya) is conjoined twins who was born to Genetic scientist and also the owner of the successful company Energion Ramchandar (Sachin Khedekar) and their mother is Thara. Both the Vimalan and Akhilan fall in love with Anjali (Kajal Agarwal) later Akhilan sacrifice his love because his brother Vimalan loves Anjali. Then comes a russian spy Volga who comes to india to know the secret of Akhilan and Vimal dad company Energion so she find out some truth. Also there is some murders happening and volga find out everything and she reveal about everything to Vimalan unfortunately Vimalan get killed and rest of the story is about Akhilan and Anjali go to Ukvania and find out the truth behind their company Energion is the rest of the story is about.
Performance
Surya - Surya has given an outstanding performance once again we can't imagine any other actors in Surya role as he live as Akhilan and Vimalan. He shown a good variation and make the audience believe that are two different character. Surya is just rocking in everthing in movie whether it is comedy, emotions, action he just rocked.
Kajal Agarwal - She didn't have any scope for acting but she did a very improtant role and she give justice to her role she comes as a russian translator and done justice. But Chinmayi dubbing didn't suit for Kajal Agarwal as it didn't sync well. The could have given some other voice rather than chinmayi because when Kajal Agarwal smiles it looks unatural and in some portions the lip sync was very bad. If they use some other voice means it would have been a better choice.
Sachin Khadekar - He give justice to his role in some scenes his acting turns to be a comedy but a good acting by Sachin Khadekhar. His villaonous act is very interesting though.
Thara - Her role was limited role but done justice to her role.
Ravi Prakash - He done justice but his role doesn't make sense though improper characterization.
Analysis - Positives and Negatives
Positives
Director K.V.Anand has comes out with a feel good entertainer as the first half is funny and enjoyalbe and second half turns to be a investigation thriller genre. The concept is pretty interesting though. K.V.Anand direction in the first half is appreciatable and for bringing the conjoined concept to tamil cinema he needs special mention. The characterization of two Surya is interesting. When one surya death audience is looking for the death surya this shows the success of both surya characterization.
Chemistry between the Akhilan and Vimalan two surya is the soul of the movie and end of the intermission everyone feel for one surya loss this is the strength for Maattrraan.
Also the visual effects and cg is just mindblowing we won't feel graphics when two surya comes together as it is just perfect. Visual effects in maattrraan is another example for tamil cinema coming in hollywood standards.
Cinematogrpahy by Soundarajan not sure whther he done any films before never heard his name before but his cinematography is just superb. Especially his cinematography for song picturization need special mention. Soundarajan cinematogrpahy is fresh and it is one of the huge strength for Maattrraan.
K.V.Anad did an osum job in song picturization also the songs comes in a right place. Especially Yaaro Yaaro which comes after one surya death is heart touching and visuals is outstanding and a nice concept for the song Yaaro Yaaro. Rettai Kadhire picutrization was interesting as it shown the formation of Akhilan and Vimalan was very good. Nani Kondi picturization is brilliant. Kaal Mulaitha Poove forced to be in the movie not needed at all.
Dialogues by Subha is good some dialogues are still in our mind when we out of the movie. Their dialogues also one of the strength to whole Movie.
Negatives
Main negatives is K.V.Anand screenplay in the second half how comes he could spoils the second half especially the last 40 minutes. First half was different genre then whole second half is a very different genre as we feel that we comes to two seperate movie. FIrst half is about the conjoined and the next half is about mystery and revenge. So when second half comes we forget Vimalan and the conjoined twins matter this shows the script and screenplay messed up really on the second half.
Screenplay was osum in the first half as everyone excepted that film will be turn very interesting in the second half but too much of details which is not at all need forced to be in the script main example is the russian portion and olympics matter which was forced to be in the script. When Surya find out about the side effects of olympicians and their condition it was forced to be in the script not needed at all. Another problem is the plot is new to tamil cinema but during the second half of the film as usual our filmakers gets into the same revenge format. As surya want to find out about mystery behind Vimalan death and he want to take revenge on his father and destroy his company energion it is asual plot and it kills the interest in second half. For the first time i felt K.V.Anand screenplay was bad in the second half didn't add any boost in it :( Didn't expect this from the maker who gave blockbuster like ayan and Ko.
Many logics missing in second half as we forced to beleive in when the movie proceeds. How come Ukvania military security is very lesser and ravi prakash and group could easily attact the millitary. K.V.Anand what happens to u in the second half u could have watched that properly. Also the climax was very rushed and very fast. As the producers gave a huge amount for this project but foucsed very much on the characterization and science and Visual effects and cg but didn't foucsed that much on the screenplay and give a masala entertainer with the huge amount. Huge investment on this but masala entertianer with this budget as this is not at all acceptable.
On the whole it is like two different movie :(
Harris Jayaraj songs are just okay Maattrraan song is not best of harris his bgm was the main main negatives of Maattrraan and the sad truth is Harris just used the bgm of whistles in Maattrraan couldn't accept that from the famous music director.
Editing was okay Anthony could have trimmed somes scenes and also focuesed very much on editing. As some scenes cutting was not that good as every scene we know anothony is cutting the scenes and also a beep coming in between didn't expect from Anthony.
Conclusion
Maattrraan can be watched once in theatre with family it is a feel good entertainer. You can go with expectation or also you can go without expectation it depend on audience taste to get impress with the film. As the product of Maattrraan is satisfying but opinion differs as some audience likes it but some dislikes it if you come to watch Maattrraan will be also high racy entertainers like Ayan and Ko then u will get only one thing that is disappointment. But mostly watch the film for it interesting subject and the chemistry between both the surya and the first half u will enjoy the movie mostly for that.
Verdict : Maattrraaan is a good entertainer but strictly avoid logic
